Having been around for better than fifty years, and having been started by a local family (the son oversees it's now) if you're into books and live on the peninsula then you've either heard of or visited Kepler's. It a large bookstore, that had stayed true to it's independent roots. It has wonderful esoteric sections, a knowledgeable and quirky staff (as only book and music stores can!), plus is conveniently located right on El Camino Real (right near the Menlo Park Caltrain station). The children's section is great, and the store hosts lots of author events and special promotions, including it's Harry Potter extravaganza.

Everyone has been to the BBC! Although have you ever met one of these British Bankers (from the name) there? A traditional sort of pub/bar that has updated itself to go with the flow as it were. Different nights may feature different themes, as specials events, parties, and etc are hosted here. With a full bar and a great outdoors patio is a fun, casual place to grab a drink, or eat a few chips. Some nights are packed, others it can be nearly deserted, so pick your poison. (It sort of depend on whether you want to go to a meat market or just hang out with some pals.) It's a large multi-level space, right on the main drag.

Definitely a neighborhood hangout! situated on prime real estate, and right next to an independent bookstore -- so that you can pick up something to pretend to be intellectual while sipping your coffee! A full-service café with sandwiches, light entrées, and beverages of all flavors. Fun, exciting, and always busy, on a clear day there is no place like it! Great outside patio with a fountain nearby. This is not a place for shy people, or those that don't like crowds. The staff is friendly if a bit clueless at times. All around fun place to grab a bite or sip a brew!

Everyone on the peninsula knows the historic Fox Theater in Redwood City, so come on over and meet the Little Fox, it's offspring! Sometimes a performance calls for an intimate setting, and the folks at the Fox did a wonderful job remodeling a vacant space next to the Theater to create an intimate venue that's perfect for close-setting performers. The acoustics are good, and the setting is posh yet fun. Perfect for a night out without having to travel to far. And the range of performers is great, check the calendar to see when one of your favorites is coming to town and see them up close.

When you're a college student transport can be a big issue, that's why it's great to have a full-service hair salon right on campus. You can walk right across campus to get your hair cut or styled. The salon services all types of hair and has been in business in one form or another for over 50 years. The owners are campus fixtures, and all the barbers and stylists are friendly. Moderates rates, extra convenient location, and great service make it a great shop. Plus it's right next to the gym, so you can watch all the people working out! The clientèle is varied, and not just limited to campus residents.

Having received many awards and accolades, the chef definitely knows what's cooking! This is a great restaurant in a relatively new and expanded location right downtown in Redwood City. It tends to be busy, but in a good way! If you like Indian food, and who doesn't? This is a great place to visit on the peninsula. It's got all the favorites (award-winning buffet for lunch and dinner), and a wonderful vegetarian selection. Open for lunch, and then dinner.

This is a well-known local hang-out, and it always seems to be busy. That's because you get good service, good food, and a fun atmosphere. The restuarant has been around forever, and has quite a history in local lore. (Check the web site for details.) The portions are generous, the menu has many choices -- including traditional favorites that everyone enjoys -- and the servers have been there long enough that you can get to know everyone by name. A family owned restaurant, and a casual dining experience.

For those who smoke, it's hard to find a place that has a good atmosphere, great service, and quality products. Edwards is just such a place. Ownership has changed -- if you knew it before you'll be amazed at the difference -- and the place is now run by the same folks who own Smoker's Paradise in San Jose. Not only have the new owners completely redone the decor and restocked the establishment, but they are friendly people to boot. Conveniently located in the prime real estate of Los Altos Square Center at the corner of El Camino Real and San Antonio Road. Drop in and say hi! (Although they kept the Edward's name this is not part of a chain, but is independently owned.)
