Once known internationally as the second –largest independent college bookstore in the nation, the Stanford Bookstore has gone through a number of changes recently that has reduced it’s stock and changed it’s focus, but it’s still quite a place for books. Set in a multi-level building on the Stanford University campus, it has a lovely children’s section, a large text book section (of course), a supplies floor, a computer store with a full-service computer repair center, a café, and other amenities. The staff is like family.

Located in San Jose/Santa Clara not far from the nearly renovated shopping area of Santana Row, the Winchester Mystery House is a throw back to olden times. Built as a penance by a Mrs. Winchester (yes, she of the Winchester rifle fame) , the rambling design of the house was supposed to have been dictated to Mrs. Winchester by numerous ghosts of the people who had been killed by her namesake rifle. It is said that the house is still haunted. Full of hidden rooms, a staircase that leads nowhere, and even door that open into the void, the house is bizarre to say the least. The staff also gives a spooky tour on Halloween that is quite exciting.

A great used book store on Castro Street that has a wonderful selection of used paperbacks., and a plethora of other items, including used videos, DVD’s, software, games, CD’s, and tapes. The location is large enough that one should be prepared to just browse – there are so many sections and corners that you could be in the store for hours. The store buys, sells, and trades books, and allows customers to setup accounts to retain store credit. All and all a wonderful book shop.

Two doors down from Book Buyers is Books, Inc. another independent bookstore. But this shop is more along the lines of the big chain stores, like Border’s and Barnes & Noble. It has its own café on a split level upstairs and it well-laid out and brightly lit, even though not a huge space. Attractive displays line the floor, and it’s a great place to browse for major sellers, and big publishers. B eprepared to pay big prieces to match!

A beautiful little church set amid a lovely bucolic square (as English schools are). The building is historic and was partially destroyed by fire. It has since been restored to its previous glory, plus some. The pastor is the Rev Stewart D. Crown, and the flock is very personable, and approachable. If you’re looking for a church, there’s no way you wouldn’t feel at home here. It has Sunday School, Bible Study, Two Communion services each Sunday (8:15 & 11:00 AM), Vacation Bible School, and a host of other programs and events. The choir is quite fabulous! If you enjoy Sacred Music drop in!

This without doubt the best produce market in the area. The Milk Pail started as an open-air Euro-style market that was primarily devoted to milk & cheeses (dairy products). While the selection of cheese has dwindled over the years, the amount and variety of produce has increased. The market is run as a co-op. All employees are part-time. And the owners have setup fantastic deals with various growers in the area, all of which allows them to keep operating costs down, and provide the customer with the best selection at the lowest price. Even if you don’t live in Mountain View, this market is worth the trip just for the bargain prices and the items available.

Known the world over for both its academic (undergraduate and graduate) and research programs, it also boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation (and possibly the world). Founded in memory of their son, Leland, who died of typhoid fever at the tender age of 14, the university began with the purpose of offering a quality education to any who merited it. Due to rigorous academic standards of admission, a top-level sports program, and numerous community-service and outreach programs, Stanford is one of the most influential residents of the peninsula. Many classes are open for general enrollment.

A friend of mine just had a baby, and I was searching for a nice gift when I cam across this shop. The location is a bit odd (at the end of a little shopping strip that includes just a video store and two food stops), but the merchandise on offer is high-quality. It’s got all the things kids should have, and many other things you wouldn’t have known they needed. A nice little store for all the things a kid needs to get off to the “right start.”
