This is a great little coffee shop with a relaxed, if trendy, atmosphere. Located near the downtown Financial district, this cafe is a great place to go if you need internet access while visiting San Francisco. The café offers free WIFI access with purchase. So buy a cup of Joe, and get some work done. It is nice, clean and has a large flat screen TV playing interesting art flicks (subtitles only of course). Cool, and hip it’s a place to be seen.

A wonderful, full-service print shop that is very professional. They do a great job on producing spot-on reproductions of submitted work. They print everything from forms, invitations, full-color calendars, and journals. This is the shop for all your printing and binding needs. Although located in the East Bay Sales reps travel to the peninsula often. The staff is courteous and fun.

One of the best known Chinese Restaurants in the Bay Area, and it also happens to be family-owned and operated. The menu is classic with all the favorites. The portions are good-sized and the atmosphere is warm – it’s generally packed. If you think food should be hot and spicy this is a great place to eat. Ask for an extra helping of the hot pepper oil. I usually even get some to go. There’s a decent selection of vegetarian items.

It began in Southern California as the local family-owned electronics store, and it spread to locations in Northern California, and now even has a few locations nationally, but it’s still the same old local neighborhood warehouse electronics parts place. This is geek heaven! Don’t go here if you need someone to hold you hand and tell you what everything is. (Bring your own geek.) Fry’s isn’t known for it’s customer service, it is known for having anything under the sun that is electronics-related and for having pretty unbeatable prices, especially when there are sales. If you like to tinker, this is your place.

Another locally owned and founded chocolatier. Scharffen Berger is very well-known for its gourmet dark chocolates, and for the fact that it stills makes chocolate the old-fashioned way with much of the turning, melting, and smelting done by hand. It is a world-class East Bay business -- a boutique chocolate maker. One of the owner/operators, Robert Steinberg, is a chocolate connoisseur, who is still excited about chocolate. If you are a chocoholic like I am, it’s great to know that world-class chocolates are very close at all times. Scharffen Berger is the first new American chocolate company to be created in fifty years, it's one of just eleven in the country to import, roast and grind its own beans, and the only one in the country not run by a large corporation.

A world-renown chocolatier that started and is stilled located in the Bay Area. This is an upscale and completely delectable chocolate – one of my favorites Joseph Schmidt, the originator of the oval shaped truffle is known for creating all sorts of shapes, and building all sorts of things with chocolate., His innovative and artistic expression in chocolate is world-renowned. Signature pieces include half-eggs (with a alternate flavor “yolk”), toy soldiers, bunnies, bears, Santas – if it can be made of chocolate the Schmidt has done it! He stills loves to make chocolate even today, and strives to create new and exciting designs. Who doesn’t love chocolate?

One of the few independent (i.e. non-mass chain) shops at the Stanford Shopping Center, the Stanford Shop, also called the U (“U” as in university) Shop is the Stanford-licensed Apparel Store “off-campus.” It is more of a souvenir store, so the amenities are squarely aimed at tourists and diehards. If it has a Stanford label on it, it’s likely they carry it here. Thingies of all sorts that proclaim Stanford in bold letters – shirts, bears, etc.

Bowling made a come-back in recent years, and it is partially due to the retro-chic of youth culture today. Bowling Alleys not only allow you to test your ability in a game of skill, but also to socialize and be seen. It you bowl well or poorly everyone in the surrounding lanes will know. It’s a fun social activity, and can be a relatively cheap date, if necessary. The bar has snacks and brews. A good family-friendly sort of place, perfect for kids of all ages.

It’s just a big rectangle-shaped room filled with pool tables, but it can be a lot of fun if you enjoy billiards, and go here with friends. You have to leave an ID at the desk to get a rack of balls. (Your ID is given back to you when you return the balls and pay your tab.) Wait Staff come around to the individual pool tables to see if you’d like drinks or snacks. (Remember to tip.) It’s located right near a decent steakhouse, so you can make an evening of it.
