Founded as a non-profit to insure even the poor and disadvantaged could afford health care, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation or PAMF has had a few troubles recently stemming from overcharging of indigent patients. The mission has not changed, and it staff is full of top-notch doctors, technicians, and lab attendants. It is one of the leading health care facilities in the area, and also one of the better ones. IT's relatively new campus, centrally located right in Palo Alto, is hard to miss -- it's a well designed location that aids the foundation in it's goal of first-class service. It has a close relationship with Stanford University, due to proximity and sharing of resources.

It began in 1960 in Sacramento, when Russ Solomon started selling records out of his father’s drugstore, it became a household name, and synonymous with counter culture, great selection, and good prices. It began as a champion promoting local artists and music, and expanded around the globe, but somehow it's stores all retain a bit of that neighborhood feel (expect possibly the WOW locations.) The Mountain View Store is one of it's best, carrying a wide-variety of everything (records, videos, and books, and boasting one of the best classical music departments anywhere. The staff can be apathetic, but the selection can't be beat. And there are people there in the bowels that really know and love the music as much as any customer. The new redesign is lacking, however. It's just a big wearhouse now.

On a clear day that's not to hot, this is the place to be. The shopping row has reviatlized this are of SAn Jose and made it a tourist attraction. All along the avenue wondeful shops line the way, in the tradition of open-air European centers. It's very upscale, but there are moderately priced items to be had, if you know where to look. And it's great for window shopping, and seeing and being seen. Plenty of places to eat around, and parking is convenient too.

I'm not a huge fan of large shopping complexes to begin with, but Hillsdale is a good place. It's not as uppity as other are shopping centers, and most of the time it's not a crowded either, which makes it perfect for me. It has most of the major stores and a few quirky independent ones too. It's a pretty nice locale over all, and conveniently located near public transit stops.

A wonderful throwback mom and pop video store that didn’t go the way of the do-do just because there’s a Blockbuster and a Hollywood Video down the street and this is because the rental prices are comparable, and the selection is amazing. Full of the hidden gems, and art films, as well as carrying the standard mass-run stuff. It has got a good selection of films that are still only available on VHS, things that you may have heard of and/or wanted see forever.

This Asian grocery store has one of the best fresh meat and fish markets in the area, plus it offers a wide selection of food and condiments, including the unparalleled (Japanese) Kasagi Hot Roasted Peas (I love wasabi!) It’s a good-sized store with all manner of nifty items there that you will want to eat. Be prepared to browse. It carries varieties of Kool-Aid you won’t find at Safeway. (Try the Mango.) And if you want varieties of produce that Safeway doesn’t carry this is a great start. The meat prices can’t be beat. (Opened by Hon Lien, a Chinese-Vietnamese woman, and her husband Andrew Do, this market has revitalized the little shopping center where it sits.)

If you’re into craft stuff, and like to create your own signature line of jewelry then this is your store. It has everything-a-ma-bob needed to make special one of a kind necklaces, bracelets, and charms. Beads, Strings, Cloths, and Yarns are all in abundance. And it’s a friendly open locale that people just wonder around browsing. There’s ribbon and random little knick-knacks all over that will just make you want to pick them up and touch. And that’s the point! (Classes are offered here, too!)

Like Fish? Turtles? Hamsters? You know all the favorite old-standard pets that kids talk their parents into because they don’t take up much room and the kids promise to take care of them, well this store has them in spades, as well as some of the ones you wouldn’t know you need as a pet until you saw it floating there. Always wanted an eel? Me too, and they’re got really awesome eels, and nifty fishes of all sorts. (You can’t miss the huge giant fish right as you walk in the front door. But please don’t point or tap the tank, for they will ask you to leave.) Buy some stickers to support getting a new tank for the ever-growing big fish (store mascot). It’s a friendly place for creature-lovers, although the owner can be a bit quirky.
