Freshly moved into its new digs at Harrison and Wabash, Thai Spoon is tempting as ever for students. In reality, it's just not that great.
It's a very nice place to eat -- a clean space and friendly waiters. But the dishes just don't leave you wanting to come back and try more. (I will except for a very nice Tom Kha soup.) I'm glad it's there for Thai selection and flavor, but something doesn't work.
Don't avoid it, but don't seek it out.

I finally stopped into this little South Loop shop in need of a Mother's Day gift. In its refrigerator case are hundreds of beautiful little choclate compositions. A box of twelve is about $15, but it really does make for a great gift. The chocolates look so good, you almost feel bad eating them! For those with a sweet tooth but not so indulgent as to buy themselves a box, they also serve some more accessible treats, such as gelato. Master chocolatiers in the South Loop -- who knew?

Once go upstairs the deceptively expansive Hothouse stretches out, from the gallery to the bar to the smallish stage. A great performance space for international musicians. I only wish it offered more all-ages shows. All in all, very colorful and vibrant -- you'll find yourself coming back.

The Siskel Film Center approaches film almost the way the Steppenwolf does theater -- very informative, with the artists and the art of the film in mind. Students in the area owe it to themselves to ride to the Lake stop and stop in for an out-of-the-way film of their interest. Ticket prices generally run about the same as mainstream theaters. Make it a habit to go there -- a great place to establish yourself in the arts.

One of the best places to see a show in Chicago. House ensemble aside, it's a wonderful venue. The area outside the theater is usually decorated with supplements about the featured playwright or the work. Incredibly clean, with an almost museum-like feel. With all the helpful information, it's a great place for those unfamiliar with Chicago theater. Because of the cast, it will delight the regulars as well. Go to Steppenwolf to see dedicated professionals really making it happen.

Rowdy and raucous, "Beautiful Bob Inn By the Lake" (not really) is as great a place to whoop it up as any. Consists of the bar, some tables, and a back area with a coin-op pool table. Cold 40's to go. The bartenders are friendly, and the crowd, though lively, is usually safe. Makes for a great local bar -- stop in if you live nearby.

This was the place where I recently caught the sold-out Zappa plays Zappa show. I could only afford tickets to the second balcony, so naturally I was a bit worried. The soundsystem and acoustics are wonderful given the theater's dimensions: huge by huge. Overall, a great place to catch a sit-down show.

This restaurant just steps from the California El (Blue Line - O'Hare) has been impressively renovated from its days as a bar. Now it serves a host of Mexican favorites in a clean setting whose interior is very pleasing to the eye. Friendly, speedy service and good solid food.
I'm picking some offbeat menu items as my favorites. I never come here without getting the Cafe Con Leche. It was advertised in neon by the front, so I figure it must have been good. Sure enough, it just melts in your mouth.
Also, I know this is fairly common, but I'm glad to see a place that serves pickled garden vegetables alongside the chips and salsa -- carrots, cauliflower, and jalapeños pickled with a bay leaf is a careful touch which is just what a good solid meal needs.
Great eats around the California Stop. Or, if you're not hungry, get a Cafe Con Leche to go, and go next door to Panaderia La Central and get a Guava Donut. Yes, a Guava Donut. You gotta love this neighborhood.

Come here for excellent horchata, but be careful -- when eating food that's filling on its own, they really catch up to you.
The food really wasn't so great. Your typical fare from a rinky-dink Mexican joint. I'm pretty sure they messed up my chilaquiles. I was there when Sabado Gigante was blaring on the TV.
Like a lot of other places, but strangely enough, this unsuspecting joint takes home the Rice Water award, bumping an otherwise 2-star restaurant up to 3. Stop by for a great refresco.

The only redeeming quality of this place is that it gives an alternative to the awful Columbia College Bookstore at 624 S. Michigan. I comparison shop between the two, but I haven't found either one to be consistently better or worse pricewise.
The portion of the store that isn't full of textbooks is full of garbagey pseudo-book and non-book merchandise that Borders must have passed on becuase they thought was too tacky. Wacky Bob's Book Barn would have thought this stuff was too tacky. It's basically like a college-kid toystore, with "funny" junk to stick in your dorm, no doubt jacking up the overhead of the textbook sales. Just sell the books, let us sell them to you, and give us a better deal than that other joke of a place.
