Went to lunch at Rikki Rikki today with a client after their signing appointment for a new condo and we were looking forward to a lovely celebratory lunch. Since we are both sushi fans (and my client had lived in Tokyo for a year) we figured this would be a great spot. For years I've been going here and today would have to be the first time I would not rank it on the higher side of Eastside sushi places. It was okay, the value was good, but the fish lacked the flavor I was expecting - including the salmon, which is normally one of the more strong flavored fish on a plate of sashimi.
I'll continue to visit Rikki Rikki but my adoration of them has been slightly diminished. My client didn't have anything negative to say but he didn't rave about it either - a sign I don't consider to be necessarily good. For sushi afficionados you know that if you've had awesome sushi you'll be talking about it afterward. I hope my next visit causes me to edit this up to a higher rating.

Yesterday we went hat shopping to a place that we've been referred to several times. When I saw "we" most people are directing the suggestion to my boyfriend, Michael, since he's the one with no hair. Or, at least very little of it now that he shaves his head with a #1 adjustment on his hair trimmer.
We picked up way more hats than we expected (a total of 5) but that is because we found a lot to like and I offered to buy one of the hats as Michael's early Xmas gift. He got 2 more casual styles that he can wear when he's out running around doing errands and then he got a couple of more formal hats to wear with suits, and the last one is a PorkPie (sp?) hat that he'll wear out on the town especially to places like jazz clubs.
The staff at B. Utz is well trained and very knowledgeable about their products. They're also very attentive to the clients as well as the hats being pulled out of the display cases. I had no idea the level of care and maintence required for some of these hats and I learned something about the materials used to produce a good hat. Oddly enough Pacific Magazine had an article about this shop printed the day after our excursion so I'm sure there'll be a small pick up in their business in the next couple of weeks before Xmas too. They carry women's hats too which I didn't realize before we went to the shop. Usually it's men recommending the shop to other men so I was pleasantly surprised when I went in to see that I could try on some hats too.
The shop is between 3rd and 4th on Union and just happens to sit next to a fabulous Gelateria on the corner. Make a nice little day trip of it and treat yourself to hats and gelato. You'll be glad you did.

I used to spend a lot more time at World Wrapps getting tasty but not overly expensive lunches. Last night we had dinner at the World Wrapps in the Alderwood Mall (Lynnwood) and I had the spicy shrimp wrap - it was decent but I was disappointed by the small amount of veggies (a cabbage mix) and the major abundance of rice. I forget that if you're going to order here you almost have to special order the proportions of these two items in a wrap.
My partner, Michael, got a salad bowl - ranch chicken. It looked okay but I must say I've seen more appealing salads in other restaurants. The look didn't stop Michael from eating every ounce of it though.
When we first came in and I saw the prices I did think to myself that they prices have gone up a bit. I thought it used to be closer to $4 for a small wrap and now they are closer to $6 and the larger wraps are closer to $7 now. Not the cheapest or healthiest meal anymore.

This lovely gelateria is a unique find in Seattle because it truly does evoke the experience of being in another place. We stopped by this weekend after some hat shopping at the nearby B. Utz shop and savored 4 flavors (not huge portions, thankfully) and a cappucino. Our choices consisted of coconut, pistachio, stracciatello, and caffe'.
When I travel to Italy I sample gelato in as many flavors as is possible and this shop will help me seek out this same desire for gelato but closer to home. I will definitely visit this shop again (I can't believe it took me this long to go there) - and I think I like it even over the long-standing Il Procopio just west of the Pike Place Market (off Western Ave).

I have become quite addicted to using Pike Place Fish's website for ordering fresh salmon for my parents. Each Christmas time for the past several years I have ordered a whole fish to be flown out to them in Kansas. Considering fresh whole King Salmon is hard to come by in the middle of the USA it is seen as quite a treat for mom and dad. It's also nice when I send a big fish for them to occasionally share it with my brothers and their families too. Summertime is when I prefer to do one for the whole clan since grilling is a wonderful summer tradition with the family.

When I have the time I'll head down to the Pike Place Market and usually I'll pick up fish for our house too, but when time is short and I need to do things quickly the website is easy to use. More than just salmon is on the site so it's worth checking out what's fresh and some of the other items to make a package out of it when you can. Sometimes I change up what I send just so they don't get tired of it.
The part my mom likes is that they get the fish in and then she'll split it up into individual portions for her and dad that they can keep in the freezer and then pull out as they need or want them. It's a wonderful way for them to enjoy the salmon for up to a month or more and it's a way for me to show them love and appreciation. I know they really like it so I enjoy sending it to them. Plus, it's a great seafood break between turkey, ham, and beef at Thanksgiving and Christmas time.

A new jazz club has opened up in Ballard and it is a welcome addition to the downtown area particularly as it helps to attract new life to the eastern side of NW Market St. We've always been fans of the Market Street Grill and it's nice to have more places moving this direction than everything just being on Ballard Ave.
Egan's replaced the old Penny Cafe' and it's been quite a transformation. The interior is now red and black with an intimate swanky yet subdued look - likely better at night than during daylight hours. A long booth seating area in the back is a favored spot for getting reservations for shows. There are usually two sets per night with one group beginning at 8pm and another set at 10pm.
Food and beverages are served with the food leaning to the southern USA - items like red beans and rice, gumbo and more are on the menu. Right now there is only beer and wine on the adult beverage menu but I'm hoping they'll expand to a full liquor license later. Jazz just sounds better with a martini. For now though the house wine (at $5 per glass) is a good deal and tasty at that.

This cute little shop up on Phinney Ave and 65th has wonderful outfits that any girl (adult) should check out. Open only 4 months this shop carries new and vintage clothing that is fun and fancy without the huge price tags of other places. Granted, it's not cheap either but I'd say the values are good for what you get - clothes with character and not a "me too" mentality.
Suzy is the owner and she's onsite most of the time. Her tastes are eclectic but not far out so there's likely to be something for just about anyone that stops in. Accessories are also fun and interesting - check her shop out for Christmas and then come back all year round.

I've had Dustin do work at many houses I've represented for sale (and my own) throughout the King County area and he's great! I would highly recommend him. I could have sworn I already wrote a review about him, but if not (couldn't find it), here it is!
Don't let his location keep you from calling - he goes all over. I've had him in South Seattle, North Seattle and Woodinville.

http://shoefly.com/ For months I've been longing to get inside this store. No, it's not that there is some bizarre exclusivity to it but rather that it sits next to where I get my hair cut by Katie Buter of Illustrated Hair in the Greenlake area. Usually I get my hair cut in the morning so I can have the benefit of gorgeous hair all day but Katie couldn't get me in till an afternoon appointment this week and OH am I happy!
Usually Shoefly is closed in the earlier morning hours so I just drool over what I see in the window. Last night I went in and spent 40 minutes perusing the lovely shoes on display. A nice assortment of interesting and funky shoes of all types: flats, casual, sporty, boots, dressy, dressy-casual, you name it!
What I loved the most is that they have styles that are much like the ones I see in Europe. Hip and edgy could be used to describe the majority of styles but there are some more conservative choices there as well. I was able to pick up a gorgeous pair of open toed red heels that were perfect to wear with my "Marilyn" dress and I also picked up a pair of wedges that are perfect for both work and casual wear.
Locations are in Seattle, Bellevue, and now Portland too. There is also a website and I've put the link in above.
Right now there is a sale going on where you get 1 pair at regular price and the second pair is HALF OFF! Go - Now - Shoefly!

We took a good friend out for her birthday dinner last night (Nov 26) to Lola and it was a new experience for all of us. What a lovely meal it was!
The run down of the menu we sampled is probably too long to cover here but let me say that we had a nice array of meats, seafood, veggies, spreads and more. The tagines (clay pots) make for some succulent dishes (we had pork and a seafood tagine).
The grilled octopus was lovely and a different way to have it served than you usually find in most restaurants. Brussel sprouts were lovely and cooked well.
Desserts were also great; dessert doughnuts, chocolate tart and the ice creams (honey & pistachio) made us all very happy. Cappucinos were also prepared well and I get pretty picky about those because I compare all US coffee drinks to those in Europe I've had.
I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone!
