Last week during the "lovely" windstorms we had just prior to the snow and ice I had a disturbing home owner experience. One of my neighbors was kind enough to run over to my door to let me know that a skylight was hanging over the edge of my roof held on only by a gutter that it had lodged into. My house is a little over 3 stories tall so this was a BIG problem.
Patrick Howe, owner of Artisan, is a contractor that I recommend frequently when helping out clients who are about to go on market or who've just bought a home. In this case I was very happy to have him as a good contact because he luckily was near my area (I'm on Phinney, he was near Greenlake) and he happened to have one of his tallest ladders on his truck.
He and a couple of his crew came over, climbed up that tall ladder (I'm scared of heights), and they secured not only the one skylight that popped off like a bottle cap they also secured the other 2 on top of my house. Apparently the builder that did this house never had the skylights secured to the roof. I've been lucky for 4 1/2 years that they haven't blown off sooner.
Like I always say, work with professionals, pay them well and it will pay off for you in the end. Goodness knows my good relationship with Patrick led him to act swiftly when my house was at risk of being pounded by more rain and then the following day the freezing temperatures and snow.

We went to the recent January 2007 version of Gay Bingo, a major fundraising event for Lifelong Aids Alliance. What a BLAST! Jill G of JB invited us and we brought along a group of friends too. Watching drag queens, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and all the crazy bingo players made for a very entertaining Saturday night.
Having lost my cousin to AIDS when we were both 25 I am a big supporter of many non-profits working in AIDS related fields. If you've ever considered providing support this is a great way to do it. Not only do you get to hang out with friends, eat some good food (simple fare but good) and have drinks you will be immensely entertained. Oh, and bring earplugs because it is LOUD.
Each month brings a new theme so be prepared! January was "superhero" night and there were some fabulous costumes. I can't wait for February...

We just started ordering delivery from this restaurant and I'm in love. They do a great job of getting the food to you piping hot and the quality is just as good coming to your door as it is in the restaurant.
Tonight we ordered garlic prawns, veggies/tofu in spicy sauce, spicy scallops, and phad see ew. YUM!!!! The option of brown rice is also very welcome and I like having the healthier option. If you're in the Phinney Ridge, Greenwood, or north Greenlake area it's worth looking into this lovely food resource.

We had pizza from here twice this week. Once it was because we were just being lazy and didn't want to cook - plus it's my boyfriend's favorite food. The second time was to thank the contractors that helped put a blown off skylight back on my 3.5 story house. Everyone was a big fan and we had 6 people eating that pizza. Hot, tasty, and delivered quickly. I love these guys year to year.

During the Christmas rush I had missed originally getting my two closest friends from high school a gift. Since this restaurant is the biggest deal in Newton, KS I decided to get them both gift cards so they could treat themselves and their families to a nice dinner out - on me (or at least partially).
Online ordering was pretty simple although the one recommendation I have for the site is that they allow you to order more than one card at a time for separate mailings. I had to go through the process 2 times - but it wasn't that big a deal. Probably a cleaner way to handle it so there are fewer slip ups with the individual processing but it would have been nice to save time.

We have been going here for quite some time (before it was Mud Bay) and we get all of our pet supplies here. Christmas this year for our pets was dominated by pet toys and treats and the hedgehog squeeky toy is an all time favorite of both our flat coat retriever and our smaller Jerk Russell Terrorists (terriers). The bulk treats are a big hit but what is bigger even than those are the greenies and the peanut butter biscuits with chunks of real peanuts on the top with a peanut butter like frosting. Our retriever could barely stand himself waiting for it as it came out of his paw stocking.
We also get the basics of food and other leashes and general pet supplies. The cat usually gets treats and catnip as well. Yes, we are the catnip drug pushers to our cat. He's 20 years old and he loves it!
There are several locations so it's worth checking around to see if one is near you.

We went on an informal pub crawl with some friends this past Wednesday and hit a few places in Ballard. The final stop on our evening out was the Old Peculiar which apparently has a late night happy hour. We were drinking Guiness and they certainly do a pour a fine one. We also played some darts, which I haven't done in ages, and had an all around good time. One of our cohorts also mentioned that the fish & chips here is quite tasty and perfect when quaffing brews.
Later in the week there are bands that typically play here as well on a rotating roster. A great trifecta of experiences would be to do dinner at Market Street Grill, head over to Egan's for jazz, and then take late night activity to Old Peculiar.

Having been to a couple of the Warren Theater locations now, typically when visiting my family in Wichita, I've become a fan of ordering gift certificates from them for family holidays and birthdays. This year I've got 2 family members that will enjoy gift certificates from Warren Theater, my mom (dad will also get to enjoy them) and my sister-in-law.
Considering my sister-in-law is difficult to buy for (at least in my opinion) I figure this will give her a way to either get out with my brother (her hubby) for a night out alone, or to take the family. Her choice. Buying clothes for her doesn't work, and I don't know the stores she normally shops in. According to my brother each year there are new things she's "collecting" and I also know she's doing a lot of selling on Ebay so I'd rather whatever I get her not show up for sale online. This kind of gift gives her an experience instead of more "stuff" too and it's highly renewable. I could get it year after year and the offerings would always be different. My kind of awesome gift to give and to get!!!!!
I'm hoping someone will take the concept of the Warren Theater and bring it to Seattle. Being able to order dinner, drinks, and watch a movie out at a big screen theater is wonderful. There is one small theater like this in Seattle now but it's an expensive place for food. I'd go more often if we had a choice more like Warren Theater.

One of my real estate clients gave me the head's up on Lau a while back, and I think he did the roof on my last house before I finished buying it. Anyway, my buddy here in Ballard got a great price on a fairly sizeable roof job and they did wonderful work, cleaned up the job site, and it included new built-in gutters (typical of a mid-century house).

Tangletown is a tasty restaurant and bar that has much better bar food than most places in town. It's a bit like a 74th St Ale House kind of place but I think it's kid friendly because it is a restaurant and bar. You should definitely try it out. The name comes from the fact that this is the name of that area of Seattle before it was actually incorporated into Seattle.
If you need a similar, but not quite like, fix to Honeybear you can get pastries, cakes and such from Zoka a block away.
