Fresh, quick and delicious Greek food

Sunday, July 16, 2006
Although I've lived in Seattle for going on 10 years now, I still miss the culinary cultural makeup of what I left. Detroit's downtown nightlife (believe me, there is one) is centered around an area known as Greek Town. So, imagine my delight when Taki's opened several years ago right off of 85th in Ballard. Taki's delivers on tasty gyros overflowing with tzaziki sauce and tender meat. Although I've yet to have theirs, Taki's wife will tell you that their souvlaki is award-winning. The horatiki salad is typically fresh with crisp cucumbers and greek feta. I did find their avgolemono (a traditional lemon, chicken and rice soup) a bit on the tart side. They recently renovated to allow for Taki to entertain with traditional Greek music on the weekends. I will warn that the seating area is small (which makes for tight quarters) and the tables are small, bistro-types which are don't necessarily make for a comfortable meal. And if you're going for takeout, calling ahead is best as they have a small staff.
