The only downside is their selection of glasses (if you're looking for those). However, in the past I've always just gotten my exams here and bought frames at Seattle EyeMDs downtown.

We live in Shoreline and it certainly would be more convenient to have a doctor closer to home. Why don't we switch? Because Seth is easily the best doctor we've ever had. In the current state of healthcare where you're swept in and out of visits ... he's never rushed (and I know he's busy) and always has a friendly word, has on many occasions squeezed us in when I know his day should be done and has always provided excellent care. He's at Mercer Island Medical Clinic and if you're looking for a new doc, he's a great bet.

Did I mention that you must try to the ginger biscuits? And if you're lucky, you'll arrive right when they are pulled from the oven. Cafe Besalu has been a favorite for us since the day it opened and judging from the throngs of people there every weekend, we're not the only ones. Don't be discouraged by a wait, it's worth it. Pain au chocolat, ginger biscuits, checkerboard cookies, quiche ... everything is excellent. The place has a small cozy feel with James just behind the case seemingly effortlessly preparing the next batch of goodies.
It's not just the pastries though, they pour an excellent coffee as well!

When you've had your fill of fancy (and often overpriced) breakfast food, head over to the Varsity Inn. Typical diner-type breakfast fare with generous portions and a friendly staff. One of a handful of places that actually serves shredded hash browns and during the week you can't really beat their $4.95 breakfast special (sausage, eggs, toast and hashbrowns!).

Although I've lived in Seattle for going on 10 years now, I still miss the culinary cultural makeup of what I left. Detroit's downtown nightlife (believe me, there is one) is centered around an area known as Greek Town.
So, imagine my delight when Taki's opened several years ago right off of 85th in Ballard. Taki's delivers on tasty gyros overflowing with tzaziki sauce and tender meat. Although I've yet to have theirs, Taki's wife will tell you that their souvlaki is award-winning. The horatiki salad is typically fresh with crisp cucumbers and greek feta. I did find their avgolemono (a traditional lemon, chicken and rice soup) a bit on the tart side. They recently renovated to allow for Taki to entertain with traditional Greek music on the weekends.
I will warn that the seating area is small (which makes for tight quarters) and the tables are small, bistro-types which are don't necessarily make for a comfortable meal. And if you're going for takeout, calling ahead is best as they have a small staff.

Bubba is a regular fixture in the weekend (though I hear she takes weekends off) and the staff are clearly true animal lovers. Although some of the items they carry a little pricier than a big chain, you can't beat the friendly faces, knowledgeable staff and supporting a great shop.

I've never been to Paris ... but I imagine it being chock full of little boutiques like Lucca. I know, I'm naive. With black walls, glittering chandeliers (all for sale) and black-framed butterfly shadowboxes on the wall, it's had to believe you're in Ballard.
They carry a fine selection of indulgences from the very small (french stationary, notecards and novelties) to the truly luxurious (Santa Maria Novella beauty products, distinct and hand chosen handbags). They also a regular stocker of select Chronicle books and the indispensible Moleskine.
Each item seems a carefully selected treasure and I find that no matter what my budget is, I manage to walk out with something special.

The surroundings are perfect for a Sex and the City type girl-fest, however I found the staff to be a bit icy. My manicure also was poorly done and lasted scarcely a couple of days (and my work is easy on the hands). It may be that it was just a bad day there. The flowery couches and colors do feel relaxed and they seemed to have a good selection of cosmetics and other beauty products.
