This chain has all the problems of Chipotle - that is, it's totally superfluous in an area already rich with incredible authentic Mexican food of all kinds, it costs more than the real thing, and it caters annoyingly to, basically, what it things a white public will want out of a burrito joint - but it has one redeeming quality: I'm told they use way too much cilantro. And I do love cilantro.

Boo. Like the Famous Foam Factory, I don't see a point to this chain's presence here. What's the matter - are there not enough family-owned taquerias and cheap, incredibly good taco trucks in Oakland and Berkeley? Do we need some place that will include the hip ingredient of the moment and charge several dollars extra? No.

They were awarded the best return policy in the East Bay Express' 2006 Best of the Bay issue. Apparently, if you get, say, a backpack there, and three years later it breaks, and you don't have the receipt, no problem - just bring it back and they'll give you a new one. So cool. They have member discounts too and a huge selection of everything. I'm no athlete or camper, but their clothing and camp food areas never fail to grab me.

While not always as cheap and friendly as Pet Food Express, Animal Farm has some interesting food and supplies for all kinds of pets. They have a policy of discounts if you buy enough and a good exchange policy, plus their name is funny. I saw cat food there that I had never seen before. Maybe your pet would like a healthy change of pace? If so, try dropping by Animal Farm.

This place is so fun. I felt weird about going to an army surplus store as a pacifist, but it seems to be run by the standard Berkeley-issue disillusioned hippies. When my roommate had "resist rebel revolt" engraved on a dog tag, nobody blinked an eye. Besides dog tags, you can get hot pants, silverware in swiss army knives, real knives of all kinds, and old school military bags from different countries here.

This place is awesome! Though they're a small joint with a small menu, it takes me ages to decide what to have. not all that surprising really - they are related to the famous Chez Panisse, in fact are named after Alice Waters' daughter Fanny. The quality here is as good as Chez Panisse but for simpler and brunchier fare. And the prices are much easier to swallow!

Bliss. Sushi-loving, caviar-snacking, seaweed-noshing bliss. Unlike local health food and typpie stores, even unlike many Chinatown grocery stores, Tokyo Fish Market's seaweed is both cheap and abundant. Their kombu is the cheapest I've found anywhere. they season the salmon roe and tobiko themselves, the altter in regular (orange), wasabi (green), yuzu (yellow), and regular colored black with squid ink. And they have tons of groceries thanks to their recent expansion, including organic produce and frozen foods. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful around the large seafood counter. So wonderful!

Although their stores are in Seattle, Los Angeles, and NYC, Babes in Toyland is also a local business: their warehouse is right downtown. It is similar in all the great, queer and women-friendly ways, and treats people right. I ried for a job there and they GAVE me a bunch of toys, including a Hitachi Magic Wand, to try and write catalog copy about. I didn't get the job because they promoted a woman of color into it, which is awesome and the opposite of what I've heard people experience at their competitor. I'll supoort Babeland any day!

This is a local favorite that has expanded to two or three locations. They serve delicious pizza and microbrewed beer, both in plenty of varieites, as well as plenty of other dinner dishes. It's the land of plenty! The San Pablo location has a garden with picnic tables out back, friendly waitstaff, and great appetizers to split while you wait for your food.
