I like the music they play, but I don't find the station very adventurous. I grew up in Davis, where we had a local independent listener-supported classical music station in the low end of the dial. I got to hear all kinds of things at all hours of the day. KDFC is owned by one of those massive corporate radio chains, the Bonneville Corporation - the ones who like to slap together a format with some cute soundbites and no DJs and just leave it running all week. KDFC has announcers, but no particular sense of adventure - they're like the Top Forty classical station. They do, however, broadcast a wonderfully cheesy radio program about kids in the musical arts every Sunday morning at 9, which is worth getting up early to hear. Downside: the stations commercials run to questions like "Are you living a three-car lifestyle with a two-car garage?" (Actual commercial, paraphrased.) Answer: No. You idiots.

I love Live 105. I started listening seven or eight years ago when my jerk boyfriend liked them, back during the time when the station sucked. Even though they weren't very good, I liked the chance to hear loud screamy music. Now they're much better - community-oriented as all get-out, with listener input on many levels, hilarious ads that parody NBC's cheesy radio ad campaign, good and adventurous music, and a zest for life. Plus, they turn into "KGAY" on Pride Weekend every year, with a rotating lineup of queer-themed music (although, like most of their music, it's mostly guy-centered). And they broadcast online - if you have a PC. If only they played more women, I could give them five stars....

The one thing I don't understand is why they say they're new. 92.7 used to be the party/dance music station. Then, for a odd year, they were the only independent hip-hop station in the area, launching with 24 hours of Tupac. Then there was drama, and when the dust settled they were a party/dance music station again. They are great, if a little repetitive (as the genre tends to be), and openly market themselves as "the gay station." It's about time!

Elephant Pharmacy is unlike any pharmacy I've ever been to. They're like if the tea and health part of Whole Foods was gently inflated to ten times its size. They have healthy solutions for pretty much any problem somewhere in their store. Plus they have delicious snacks, sweet and savory treats, fun toys, a great book selection, and a ton of video rentals (including lots of mainstream titles) that rent for just a dollar each. And free classes! And massage! And makeup that won't give you cancer!

Mars is a used clothing store, but compared to the local mini chains like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads it has quite a few differences. It actually has vintage clothing, for one thing. It has a big supply of wild and beautiful leather jackets, prom dresses, and the like. And it has a long counter full of old badges and jewelry, which is not only entertaining but also shows their long-standing presence in the area. They've put time into building up their collection.

I'm not much for the beer, myself, but I admire the way Pyramid Alehouse matches one of their beers to each item on the menu. I like the idea of a beer sampler. And I love the fact that in the summertime, Pyramid shows movies outside - on the wall of the building, I think. Giant movies out of doors are a cool way to have fun.

I admit it, I have never been inside this place. It is located near the Gilman-area Target, and I love it with a passaion. How can you not love a place that is covered with all kinds of cool street signs? Walk! Children Xing! Stop! I like to imagine that people outfitting a street with its first Yield or 20 MPH sign come here first.

Destiny Arts Center has many awesome programs covering a whole range of dance and martial arts work toward nonviolence. My favorite of their progams, and the one with which I am most familiar, is Teddy Bears. This is a self-defense program for 3 to 7 year olds. They learn "the five fingers of self-defense," which focus on communication and walking away, and save fighting back for last, and they do lots of art, walks to the park, and tiny martial arts exercises too.

Plenty of microbrews and other tasty forms of alcohol (Newcastle Brown Ale on draft springs to mind) but what I like at this pub is the snacks. They have great pizza and a divine artichoke and cheese dip that I could very happily eat all night. Hang out upstairs, downstairs, or outdoors, but expect to be ID'd with a quickness if you come after about 6 or 7.

A really incredible chocolate store. I do love my Bittersweet, but Cocoa Bella is a whole other world. It's yards of glass cases holding jewel-like chocolates with lovingly printed little descriptions of each one. Other, more normal high-end bars and some candies are also on offer. I could spend literally any amount in here and never feel like I had overdone it.
