When it comes to Chinese food, I mostly like the Hunan and Szechuan cuisine, or at least what passes for it in Oakland. Having never been to China, I couldn’t tell if I’m eating the real thing or just some watered-down version for American pallets. I make an exception for Ly Luck restaurant on Fruitvale because it serves fresh food, most of the time, and it’s right in my neighborhood. The quality can be up and down, but I have had a number of large parties in the banquet room that were top notch. I think it’s best to go there in a group of 5 or more to be able to sample a number of dishes. Try the Salt and Pepper Shrimp or Eggplant with Black Bean sauce. Open 11 to 9, 7 days a week.

Tucked into a busy street behind a nondescript façade, is a casual, comfortable, calm Cambodian restaurant that serves good food at reasonable prices. The cuisine includes variations of curry, like Vietnamese and Thai food, but I’ve noticed that there are subtle differences from those two cuisines. Fewer fried dishes than Thai, fewer raw veggies than Vietnamese. The décor is open and airy in this small restaurant.

It’s hard to know where to take your computer when you’re in a desperate situation. Whom to trust? I took a chance one day a few years ago, and took my PC to General Computer. I wasn’t disappointed. They evaluate your computer first, to see if what you want can be done, then they give an estimate, which they adhere to. Hourly rate is $65 per hour in the shop; it varies for house calls. They only work on Windows machines. They have an arrangement to have Macs repaired by a guy who picks them up, takes them to his shop and brings them back. Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend that guy; his work has gotten spotty.

The old wash house on the corner of MacArthur and Loma Vista in the Laurel district of Oakland got a facelift early last year. All the machines were swapped out, the parking lot was repaved, and a Wells Fargo ATM was added to the outside. If you have to use the landromat, you may as well be in one that’s new, and the machines still work. They even have things for sale, like backpacks and umbrellas. Another bonus: play video games and pinball while you wait. 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. 7 days a week.

If you’re a political lefty, it’s been difficult these last few years. One place you can be sure your outrage is given public voice is on the marquee of the Grand Lake Theater. The messages started after the 2002 presidential selection, and continue to this day, giving the theater owner’s opinion on various issues. But since I agree, I support the place with my dollars. Yes, it’s a real movie house, showing first-run blockbusters in its four theaters. But it’s also a deliciously remodeled art deco venue complete with tons of neon and other 20s-era decoration. There is no politicking once inside the building, just the usual movie food, comfortable seats, and beautiful décor. Excellent parking across the street under the freeway.

Your dreadlocks need tightening? Your twists need twistin’? Lock Chocolate is ready, well, sorta ready. When I called for an appointment, I left a message. They didn’t call me back. Once I did get the appointment, I was pampered and given the royal treatment for the royal price of $85. I keep my locs (this is how it’s spelled) very short, having cut off those heavy, long ones, but the length didn’t change the price--or the amount of care Schatze put into my hair. I must have been worked on for close to 2 hours. His business partner, Keith, works on locs also. They do perms and cuts, but dreads are their specialty.

Custom frame shops are a dying breed, so it’s a wonder that Raymond’s continues to exist. The reason is simply that they do excellent work. They spend the time to determine with you the right frame and mat to go with your artwork. I’ve gone in there with ideas for frames, and have also let them decide completely what was required. They have the better eye.

Terry Wilson gutted our kitchen, including removing the back wall. He put in the plywood (called shear) required for a future expansion, added windows, put in all the cabinets and appliances, and took care of getting the sheetrock and stucco crews in and out. He was good with suggestions and very easy to work with. I definitely recommend him. His number is 685-3290.
