A notorious speakeasy during Prohibition, Cafe du Nord is now a nightclub, restaurant and live music venue. However, it has still retained all the Victorian charm of the good ole days. Always featuring an eclectic offering of music, it is a great place to check out local and indie favorites for a good price.

I love coffee shops. I worked in one for a few years when I was a broke college student and I will forever have fond memories: sneaking beer we had on tap, talking with the regulars, and "sampling" the gelato. Atlas Cafe recalls this particular coffee shop for me, except the food is better, there is a beautiful backyard seating area, and they have a good magazine rack to rifle through.

I have always loved Grain d'Or, now called Andersen Bakery, for their perfect sandwiches and their delicious breads. They have been a mall staple for years, and for some reason they are all disappearing! This outpost in Japantown is the only one left in San Francisco (as far as I know). The chicken provolone sandwich is really good, they use pesto mayo and basil leaves to give it that extra punch. I also love the pesto and the paisano bread. I hope this one doesn't disappear like the rest...

Gorilla Sports is not for the weak. This is a gym for tough city folk who like something different in their workout. Located in the old Alhambra theater, the environment could not be more beautiful. They have preserved all the old detailing, and there is still a huge movie screen that they use to show the newest movies to DVD. Simply tune your headphones to a designated station and watch a flick while you work out.
This place is LOUD most of the time. They often blast electronic music and many of the classes are held in the middle of the gym, so there's lots of yelling and stomping. Since it's a theater, all that noise tends to echo. Depending on who you are, this environment is either energizing or overwhelming.

I will always have a special place in my heart from those diners that serve breakfast all night long. How many nights I have craved some greasy food after a night out, and they have been there. Lucky Penny is the best of its kind. There's never a wait, parking readily available, and the staff is really nice. The food that I've had there (mostly breakfast food) has always been good and never leaves me with that nasty feeling that most diner food gives you. It's also a great weekend brunch spot if you don't feel like fighting the crowds at the trendy hipster spots.

When I first moved to San Francisco, I noticed this little place kitty corner from my apartment called the Hyde Out. I thought it looked so cozy and appealing. It is a two story bar, with the first story consisting of a bar with some stools and a few tables scattered around. The second floor is just tables, with windows going around the whole room. The whole place is tiny, and its a great place to go if you live in the neighborhood and you're looking for an intimate place to have a good chat with a friend, or enjoy a book. Think coffeehouse, but with stiffer drinks.

This store is like a garden, a science museum and a gothic kid's bedroom all at once. I stumbled upon it one day when I was walking down Valencia Street. They carry all sorts of beautiful plants and garden stuff, but they also have unique items such as animal skeletons, pinned bugs and butterflies, neat shadowboxes, and more. It's hard to describe this place, but it is fun. There's a lot to look at, so even if you're not looking to buy anything, you'll enjoy this store.
