There is nothing worse than having a terrible landlord. I dealt with a total slumlord in my last place, where she once left us with no power for three days...long story. Anyways, I was relieved when I was able to move. My place now is owned by Better Property Management, or BPM. They have been nothing but great as far as maintenance, and if my place needs anything they are there within a few days. I'm also getting a good deal on the apartment, and they don't ever bother me for anything. It is also nice having your landlord be a property management company, because you know everything will always be done in a professional manner. I highly recommend renting from these guys.

There's nothing better than having a good restaurant close by as your "go to" place when you don't have food at home. For me, this place is Mikado Sushi. I always get their combination bento box, which offers miso soup, salad, rice, and your choice of two or three items like chicken katsu, salmon teriyaki, sushi, etc. It is a great deal and the food is good. The atmosphere is mellow, and they also offer delivery for orders over $20 for free.

I love to knit. I know it is such a trendy thing to be into these days, but being in grad school makes me stressed out. Knitting is the perfect way for me to calm down, and take some time to sit and relax. I am always looking for good yarn stores that aren't too expensive. Noe Knit has a great selection of beautiful colors and textures of yarn. Their staff is also very helpful and kind. The prices are a bit steep, but I think for this kind of quality, they are what would be expected.

If you're hanging out on Haight Street and looking for a place to get a quick, inexpensive lunch, Blue Front Cafe is a great place to go. They have really delicious sandwiches, and a number of Greek inspired wraps. Last time I had the feta wrap, which was very yummy. The ambiance is casual (like a coffee shop) and they call your number when the food is ready, so no need to tip.

I'm a big fan of bookstores. I can spend a long time just browsing, and I love the calm and peaceful atmosphere in most bookstores. Green Apple Books is the absolute best used bookstore I have stumbled upon in the city. Most used bookstores I have been in have a jumbled mess of really ancient books, some of which may look interesting, but for the most part it feels like an old library. Green Apple is different because they have many of the latest titles in every genre, plus nice recommendation cards from the staff. They also carry some of the latest new releases. And if this isn't enough, they have a DVD and magazine section that is great too! I'm in heaven.

I was looking for a unique gift and I stumbled upon Tibet Styles, a jewelery store on Haight Street. They carry a multitude of earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings with semi-precious stones of all colors. All the jewelery comes from (shock!) Tibet. I picked out a pair of earrings, and the woman at the counter told me it was a milky moonstone. She was very nice and helpful. My boyfriend later went back and bought me a beautiful necklace there, and the same woman said a Tibetan prayer that is supposed to endow protective qualities on the jewelery.
Even better, everything is very reasonably priced and nothing will break the bank.

I really love pizza. And the creme de la creme of New York style, thin crust pizza is Escape from New York. Ever since high school, I've loved going to Haight Street and a slice from this place is quinessential to the trip. The place is small, but you can usually find a place to sit. I also enjoy all the signed pictures on the walls of random celebrities that apparently also love this place.

Last weekend, I went camping with some friends at Point Reyes. Although I absolutely love the city, sometimes I yearn for trees and sky and ocean, and this was the perfect antidote to that. We parked and then hiked in to our campsite (about a 2 mile hike). The campsite was surrounded by hills and was a two minute walk from the beach. I had a great time. If you're yearning for some outdoorsy time, this is it.
