Jules Catering is one of the best professional catering companies in Boston. They can adapt to any setting, from the Park Plaza Castle to a church auditorium. While many other catering companies buckle under pressure, Jules comes prepared. Hire them for just cocktails and hand passed hors d'oeuvre to a full scale plated lunch or dinner. Their chefs are creative and consistent and their party planners will give you exactly what you want.

Zuzu is the tiny little bar/restaurant in between the up and downstairs Middle east Nightclub locations. All of them share a kitchen, but Zuzu's menu is a bit different. There are good hummus and tabouly dishes, falafel platters, pressed sandwiches, and probably the best of all, quesadillas. Their drinks are not cheap, but they're large. A rocks drink will last you a while. They also have a good, but not too extensive, wine selection at decent bottle prices. Many nights they have live music, or at least live electronic musings. The cover is usually low, if any, and the setting attracts more minimalist experimental acts.

The Middle East club is one of the best places to see a show in Boston. The venue is separated into and upstairs and a downstairs, both with their own entertainment bills. The upstairs has a front room which is the Middle East bar and restaurant, and the back room is the performance area. The acts range form huge to unknown, many times both on one bill. The back bar sells 16oz tall-boy cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon or Miller High Life for $3, but if you order one at the front bar you'll get a 12oz bottle. So, if you've paid for the show, make sure you buy your beers in the back room, and only go up front for the good stuff. The downstairs is considerably larger, and the entrance is actually around the corner. It has it's own bars, and offers larger acts, but the sound quality isn't as good...it's kind of a big basement. Upstairs is more intimate, but both get pretty rowdy.

This is a rare exception among all of the railroad style restaurants on Brighton Ave. It's clean, spacious, the people are really nice and helpful (even with a bit of a language barrier), and the food is excellent. There are well priced lunch specials and a huge selection of entrees. Their Naan bread is out of this world. Beef vindaloo and the chicken tikka masala are my favorites. Get a couple of entrees and some naan sides and mix and match with one or two of your friends. The food is absolutely delicious.

Many grocery stores have fast food shops inside..the most dominant is probably Dunkin' Donuts. But is Allston/Brighton's Shaws, there's a Bruegger's Bagel shop, complete with seating. It's only a daytime operation, but it's convenient. Everyone's always said, don't go food shopping while you're hungry, so think of Bruegger's as a pit stop. They make wraps and sandwiches, bagels, some pastries...and coffee! This area of town needs a coffee shop! While some of the sandwiches are a bit overpriced, $5 or $6 bucks in Bruegger's could save you about $20 in Shaws.

This place is not so great. their prices are pretty high, especially if you like to drink beer that wasn't made by anheuser bush. Bass 12 packs are something like 14 or 15 dollars, six packs are close to 9. No one should ever have to pay close to 10 bucks for 6 beers. But this place has a good location and they can rip people off. Their wine department carries some very high end items, and they also have some good deals on things like miller high life. The best thing they got going is their nip buckets by the registers...lots of times there will be bushmills whiskey nips or jim beam black nips for $1. A couple of those, and you're cheaply on your way to a care-free night.

Marty's in Allston is more than a liquor store, it has an amazing deli. Boar's Head meats, nice rolls and french baguettes, all kinds of gourmet spreads and toppings, a hoard of pre-designed sandwiches, pasta and potato salads, grape leaves...tons of stuff. Not to mention a bunch of awesome jerks who work back there. The store also has a lot of gourmet products you can buy, like hot sauces and mustards and olive oil and cheeses, and imported pepper balls. Aside from all of that, they have a big wine department and often feature some really cheap beer. For a few months they were selling Bass ale pub can 8 packs for 8 bucks...other places had them for almost double. And maybe if you're lucky, you'll run into the notorious Mr. Butch on the street corner.

Bagel sandwiches. Lots of places do them, but this place is up there with the best. Breakfast or lunch, there's a combination waiting for you. Turkey avocado club, ham and honeymustard (which is almost like molasses!), eggs, veggies, tons of things. They have a great selection of bagels too, my favorites being sun dried tomato and jalepeno, and they also have a lot of crazy spreads and cream cheeses. On a weekend morning/afternoon, the lines get pretty intense and the seating is very limited. Sometimes not worth it. Closes by 5 or 6 pm.

I like getting my hair cut here a lot. It was the first place I ever went to that actually washed my hair for me. For guys, going to a salon may sound a bit over the top, but at only $30 for men's cuts, paying $16 for a half-blind supercut withers in comparison. There are also cats slinking around in the background..which are a nice touch, UNLESS YOU'RE ALLERGIC! Everyone there is great at what they do, but I usually go with Andrea if I can. Fun Fact: Apparently I left a picture of some hair ideas (including an old picture of myself) at the salon after a cut...I'm told it's now in their Style Book. Too bad I just shaved my head....

In this digital world we live in, what is the point of keeping anything but your favorite CD's? You bought it, so make a copy of it for yourself, and then get rid of it. CD SPINS will offer you more than other places too...sometimes it's only a buck or two a cd, but who else will buy another copy of Hello Nasty? Seriously, when I sold my Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, and Cake collections I had a big night at the bar. If you intend to buy more music, they tend to offer about 30% more for store credit as opposed to cash. Up to you.
