I braved this place once, amidst all the rumors that they would butcher my hair. All I asked them to do was trim my bangs. They did it, they did a good job and they charged me $3. I can't complain. Now, I've seen a few haircuts from here that just didn't look right, as I'm sure many others have as well. Nevertheless, you have to figure there's plenty of people getting their hair cut here that we don't notice because it came out fine. If your hair is short and you aren't emotionally attached to the results, I say, why not? You won't find a cheaper option unless you've got a friend with hair-cutting scissors.

This place is lovely. They play good music, it's a pleasant place to spend time in, the employees are knowledgeable and helpful and so forth. The cost of sitting ($8) isn't so bad, especially if you can finish in one sitting. The cost of the pieces you paint starts to add up, although getting the irregular pieces for no cost has been my favorite strategy. Hey, you go and have a great time and when it's over, you can always give the pieces as gifts when you get them in a week or so.

If you're near Newbury St., Berklee School of Music, or the Fens, Costello's is conveniently located on Boylston near Mass Ave. They've got a pretty nice selection for a small store, including bar tending accessories like shakers and pourers. They didn't carry Mike's Hard Lemonade the last time I was there, though, which was something of a disappointment.

Kappy's is truly the place to go for pretty much anything you need containing or pertaining to alcohol. They've got a large selection of beer, aisles of wine, liqueurs that never even occurred to you before and whatever quality of liquor you can afford, from the $9.99 plastic handle of Kappy's brand vodka to Grey Goose. The store is clean, the employees are friendly and knowledgeable about the products they sell. They also do an exceptional job of packing up your purchases such that nothing breaks in the car on the way home.

You can buy your share of fish, lizards and rodents here, not to mention obtain all the accouterments of pet ownership, but Petco really has some nice extras. There's a little grooming salon in the back, for one thing. Also, there's the vaccination clinics for cats and dogs. Some Saturdays various shelters bring dogs and cats to the store to meet those looking to adopt. I've always had relatively good luck finding what I need there.

The one and only time I ventured into The Fairy Store, I emerged with two Lily Holbrooke CD's, a photography book of children dressed like fairies, a print of a fairy girl holding a crystal ball, and God knows what else I've forgotten by now. I have not dared to enter again.
Seriously, everything in the store is beautiful and the person I met working there was great to talk to and I love what they sell. It just adds up real fast, that's all. Definitely check it out, just decide how much money you're going to spend before you go in.

I had a terrible experience at this Ben & Jerry's last month. I called ahead to inquire about their hours and I was told explicitly by an employee that they would be open until 10 and that they would make our group a Vermonster up until store closing. When our group of nine people arrived and tried to order a Vermonster and a number of other cones (that is, tried to spend more than $50 at their store), we were told by another woman that she was the manager and that her employee had given us the wrong information and they would not make Vermonsters after 9:30 and since we arrived at 9:42, they could not possibly make us one as this would require using things they had already cleaned and having to clean them again. Furthermore, she told us that her employee had to catch a bus and leave right at ten so they wouldn't have time to clean up. She then offered to give us regular ice cream cones, but she wasn't particularly friendly about it so we left.
Fortunately, we were able to get some great ice cream at Herrell's around the corner and have a pleasant time out. At some point, we realized that other people might have tried to come meet us at the Ben & Jerry's so we returned, around 10:30, to make sure we hadn't accidentally ditched anyone. When we got there, we saw both the manager and the employee who "had to leave right at ten" standing behind the counter chatting with each other.
I think this kind of customer service is pretty ridiculous, especially considering you can buy Ben & Jerry's ice cream at the 7-11. If an employee mistakenly promises service to a large party, I feel the establishment should do everything possible to live up to those promises, since the fault doesn't lie with the (attempted) customer. I will be avoiding this store in the future.

I went to Herrell's in Harvard Square once after a bad Ben & Jerry's experience. They were super friendly and helpful and the place was big and clean and pretty cool. I was particularly fond of a big jungle mural on the back wall. The ice cream was quite good as well, certainly as good as Ben & Jerry's, probably even as good as J.P. Licks. Overall a pleasant experience, though a little pricey obviously.

I think J.P. Licks is highly quality. They've got a great selection of classic and wacky flavors, plenty of toppings and generous serving sizes. The employees are friendly and helpful and the store is open until midnight so there's practically no excuse not to make it down there. Furthermore, they make splendid ice cream cakes. The prices are certainly higher than you'd pay at the grocery store, but the portions are big enough that it doesn't seem so bad.

Tosci's is good, I'm not arguing with that, exactly. They've got this dark chocolate flavor that I even really like. Still, it's really expensive. On a date or a special occasion, I can see going there and maybe getting some coffee, too. I gotta say, in general, I think a Hood ice cream bar or a triple chocolate King Cone or anything else you get at the 7-11 is just as satisfying. Maybe I'm just not a real ice cream connoisseur. Mostly, I just think it's a lot of money to spend on dessert, especially considering the smallish portions.
