I love to camp and have been camping at Portage Lakes State Park for 15 years now. They have a pet camp area, as well as a regular camping area. Each campsite has a fire ring and a picnic table. They have a variety of sites, 74 in all. The sites range from right on the water, to back in the woods. Make sure you arrive early on the weekends to get you pick of the camp!
In the summer on the weekends they are always doing special things, like showing kind-friendly movies at the open air theater,, as well as a number of other family activities. Our favorite is Christmas in July, where they give prizes for the best decorated camp site.
I have only ever had one problem with this place in the whole 15 years i have been going there. There was one evening last summer when there were some unruly partying people, being loud late into the night. Every time we went to the camp station to find a ranger, no one was there. We did contact the park office the next day and they promptly offer us a refund and an apology.
Besides camping, Portage Lakes also offer swimming, hiking, fishing and boating.
