If you're looking for someone to cater your kosher event, Neil Abel's catering company is a good, reliable choice. While Neil's sole criteria for determining food quality is quantity, he is lucky enough to have a staff that makes sure he's not lacking in flavor and presentation. With Stanley Moniz running the kitchen, he provides both well prepared basics (he was right - people gobbled up the franks in blankets at my wedding) and some more inspired dishes (exceptional duck crepes, incredible desserts). You'll be able to relax and enjoy your party with Stanley at the helm - all will go smoothly, and your guests will be well fed.

Oolongs is a great alternative to the many coffee shops of New Haven. Since many of us think of tea as twinings, lipton, or celestial seasonings, it's a fun treat to go to a shop with a prodigious menu that's almost exclusively tea! Ranging from affordable to extravagant, I've enjoyed every cup of tea that I've had at Oolongs. More importantly, though, the owners have paid great attention to details designed to make your tea time a special experience - there are quirks, like the tea timer that buzzes when your tea has hit its ideal steeping duration, and the rock crystals of sugar they hand you for sweetener, and then there are the solid business practices - like friendly and charming waitstaff that let you linger over your tea and make you feel at home, and a high level of aesthetic sensibility from teapots to decor. I recommend slipping in to warm up and relax with a pot of lychee red or lapsang souchong in the winter, or grabbing a bubble tea and sitting at one of their outdoor tables during the summer.

If you like Ethiopean food, Lalibela is an easy sell. If you've never tried it, you owe it to yourself to make Lalibela your first experience with Ethiopean food.
Full of spices (but not too hot), Lalibela's lunch buffet is a perfect introduction to the cuisine. You'll get to try the lentils and other legumes, the collard greens, the carrots and green beans, a few meat dishes (if that's your thing), and their cold offerings - a beet salad and a tomato and pepper salad.
The service is not the best, but the food is tasty and satisfying, and no one will ever pressure you to leave before you're ready. A great place for a lingering dinner, or lunch with a friend you haven't seen in a while - or anytime you're craving a good meal.

Starbucks is a great corporation. If you're traveling in a strange city and want a cup of coffee, you know what you'll be getting at Starbucks.
But if you live in New Haven, why not get a good cup of Koffee? - and everything Starbucks can't give you: local community and culture. Koffee has a similarly peaceful and attractive feel, but is decorated with revolving art by local artists - often good, sometimes spectacular. The baked goods are fresh baked by the guys and gals serving your coffee, and are uniquely delicious recipes. And speaking of the baristas, they're skilled and snarky, in just the right mix of politess and color as they pull your espresso shot. If you get your koffee and stay, your fellow customers will be Yale students and professors, studying or discussing a wide range of topics, local professionals trying to take a quick break from the office, young mothers with their babies enjoying a bit of social life, and, in the afternoon, school kids and their parents.
Wireless is free, and there's always reading material (and a few board games) on hand. Patrons are friendly and welcoming of newcomers. The muffins are to die for.
Also - Vegan friendly! Soy options (and prepackaged vegan cookies) abound.

There's nothing quite like a beautifully stocked garden store. All the gorgeous plants, blooming, heartily growing, all green and luminous...Shelley's is a family run operation in Branford that knows a great display will convince anyone (even me and my black thumb) to give gardening another try. Extensive collection of herbs includes hard to find plants like lemongrass and lemon verbena as well as staples like basil and rosemary. Hanging plants, trees, good selection of rose stock. In the fall, check them out to buy pumpkins, and later, pine wreaths and garlands. They're also good with advice for inexperienced gardeners.

New Haven has plenty of theater offerings, but the Yale Cabaret is special. With a new show every weekend during the school year, and several shows over the summer, Yale Cabaret is an energetic and exuberant theater scene. Shows range from experimental premieres to downscaled musicals to shorter classics - a mixed bag. The productions are either mindblowingly awesome or truly awful - no middle ground - but it's a cheap enough price of admission that it's worth chancing it on any given show.
Dinner and/or dessert plus drinks are served before the show - it's a wonderful opportunity for a night out. You're guaranteed to have something to talk about when the show's over.

I used to go to whatever hairdresser would take me on the day I was ready to cut my hair. Then I started noticing that everyone in my office had *really* great hair...lo and behold, they were all using the same new salon: Karma.
I decided to give them a try. I walked in, and they offered me my choice of a chai or glass of wine. My hairstylist started off with a 15 minute head massage. He then spent 2 hours making a masterpiece out of my hair...and true to his word, it never needed "product" or fancy styling to look great.
As evidence of their skill at Karma, I submit: the mark of a great haircut is how long it looks good. I grew my short hair out for a year and a half before my wedding. It kept fabulous shape the entire time. People kept complimenting me on the style...a full year after it was cut!
The atmosphere is great, and you'll leave feeling like a superstar. All of their stylists are exceptionally talented - you'll be in good hands with anyone there...but I have to put a shout out to my own guy, Gabriel.
(Men - Karma can cut your hair too. Free cleanups make it cost efficient. Stop going to supercuts!)

There are a lot of Indian restaurants in the greater New Haven area...plenty of them are good, few are great. If you're willing to travel 10 minutes outside of New Haven to Branford, Darbar has fabulous food and wonderful, friendly service.
The menu holds no surprises when it comes to offerings, but the caliber of the cuisine makes eating there exceptional. Of particular note - the saag (a dish that can easily be dull elsewhere is delicately and complexly flavorful at Darbar) and the Kadai Paneer (where the chunks of cheese, onion, and green pepper are never overcooked).
Don't overlook them for a larger affair - they have an upstairs room that is perfect for birthday/graduation parties, rehearsal dinners, etc.
