They finally moved one of France's great homestores to the city. Madura is on Madison between 85th and 86th. You just don't find curtains like they have in the city. They have a beautiful array of ready-made curtains as well as tie-backs and decorative pillow covers (as well as inflatable pillows if you need inserts).
Best deals are on items going out of stock, they get discounted 30 - 50%.
Now, price is the one downside - curtains are sold by the panel - ONE PANEL - can can be very, very pricey. If you're in the market for curtains and going to Paris anytime soon, take a look at this store, write down the item number, size and price, and try to get them in Paris - I saved over 50% there and got two curtains for $10 more than I would have paid in the city.
That being said, great place to browse and get ideas, too. Just beautiful merchandise!

For some reason, this UES branch of the Gap always looks slightly better than a flea market. I know the Gap has nice clothes, but they don't look very nice at this store. Note - it is located in a landmark, a former bank, and if you have a minute, check out the iron doors, you won't see many in the city.
As soon as you enter, though the store is bright and spacious, the layout and items near the front of the store just do not make me want to peruse through their merchandise. Great if you know what item you're looking for, but if you're going for a browse, try another store.

Ann Taylor loft is a great store, and this branch has very nice staff. Because it's a bit smaller, it's less overwhelming than some of the 2-level stores. Only issue is, they seem to get less stock than some of the other branches, so especially if you're looking for smaller sizes, you might not find them here because they get less merchandise than other stores.
They do have a great petite section, and there's almost always something in the store you will be bound to love, and pair with other items already in your wardrobe.

This place has outstanding tapas. My two favorites were the croquettes and the dates wrapped in bacon. The SPanish ham, of course, is not to be missed, and the olives stuffed with anchovies are a bizarely delicious combination!
I was with a group of 10 and we got the area in the front and plenty of wine to make it a great time. They have long tables in the back for larger parties.
I recommend coming early so you can get a good seat, and they also seem to turn up the music volume later which would make it hard to have a conversation.

This is a great little nail salon that's gone through a few renovations and name changes, and may have finally gotten it right!
Staff is very friendly, and manicures/pedicures are the kind where they take their time, so you don't feel rushed, they don't hack up your nails, they do a great job, and it's very relaxing.
But, the massage is just the best part! You must request the male masseur (sp?) - there's only one guy there and he is just crazy good. I've only done the chair massages, but they are great - REALLY DEEP (so if you don't like deep, you will not like this guy) - and he blends in some stretching, lots of neck work, and at the end, he rolls your neck, and massages your face, MELT!

I love train rides, but somehow, Amtrak is consitently late - and I mean an hour late. The prices have skyrocketed, because there's still no competition, and the Acela just doubles the price of the regular train. Even with the Acela, that train seems to break down a lot. Now, I will say, that's a nice train - whole thing is like being in first class, a very pleasant place to be stuck if you do get stuck.
Otherwise, the regular NE Corridor line is just a pain - always late, don't think the trains have been upgraded for years, interiors are kind of dark, depressing. The seats are fairly comfortable, at the very least, but don't expect a big smile from the conductors - $100 train ride doesn't buy good service.

This is a great pub/restaurant in the middle of Maryland. I am a New York City girl, so don't ask me to tell you where Westminster is, but this was a fun place! Upstairs has a very medieval feel - working fireplace, clunky wood furniture with bizarre cut-out kingly-shaped chair backs, long tables.
OK, it's an Irish pub, so they of course have Guinness (yum) but they also have CRAB CAKES! Now, of course, it's MD, so everyone should have crab cakes, but these were really, really good! Unlike the ones you find in the Tristate area, these were full of crab and not full of much bread, etc.
Cheese plate is a little skimpy on the cheese, onion loaf app is awesome, as are the cod cakes.

Entrees come with a salad, and the food is just delicious! I tried the tilapia almondine, the pasta looked great, everyone at our table (11 of us!) were very satisfied with our meals. Pacing was just perfect. Shiraz wine was great.
And, when you get to dessert, they bring out a tray of the selections and put it on the table. Believe me, you won't be able to resist!

I decided to have brunch somewhere new for a change and was pleased to discover Peter's Gourmet Diner. There was a wait outside, but, at least tables of 2, didn't wait long. They have a huge front room, and then a second addition in the back - covered with plastic to block rain and snow, and allows a view of the surrounding buildings (nothing glamorous, but you can tell you are outside.)
Personally, I thought the inner-room was nicer - brighter, more open feel, but the back room wasn't bad.
The menu is huge, you'll probably take a while to find something, and they have a bar to top off your brunch, and these drinks are real - whereas the Gracie Diner (also good) gives you a slightly watered-down drink, this place might just set your head spinning!
Service was pretty good, waitresses were nice, food came fairly quickly. Wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was pretty darn good.
Brunch price, however, was a bit higher than Gracie's which also offers the booze-brunch. I guess that's the price you don't pay for a little water in your drink.

If you need a quick pre-movie dinner, this is a good place to consider. Don't expect a gourmet meal, but if you like burgers - plain, or with lots of toppings - they have a lot of choice. Not the best place if you're health conscious, but they do have a veggie burger (haven't dared to try it yet), turkey burgers are so-so, but if you're up for a hamburger and fries, they are pretty good!
Restaurant itself, though, is a bit bland on the decor, definitely not a place to go if you want to sit around with friends for a long chat.
