I have visited this store in downtown Seattle twice now to sell a couple of small sterling silver candy dishes. One of my co-workers recommended the store to me as one that has been in Seattle for a long time and that has a good reputation. As its name implies, this store specializes in rare and collectible coins and currency. However, they also offer sterling silver and gold jewelry, including jewelry set with precious and semi-precious stones. They actually have a rather large and good jewelry selection. They also sell small collectibles and small vintage and antique items such as vintage costume jewelry and accessories. Both my visits to this store were very satisfying. The owner/staff are polite, professional, very friendly and a good source of information on what they offer. If you have jewelry, coins or certain kinds of collectibles you would like to sell, I would certainly recommend them. If you are looking for gold or silver jewelry, I suggest you visit their store before you head to one of the large department stores or jewelry stores. You may find what you’re looking for at a price below the retail price you would pay at a major store.

When my dentist retired, I asked people at my office to recommend a new dentist to me who had a downtown Seattle location. At least five or six people where I work recommended Dr. Prince. I have been a patient of his for about a year and a half now. I haven’t needed to have more than checkups done, but during the routine visits I’ve made to his office, I have found him to be personable, professional and courteous. He seems to genuinely enjoy helping patients. His staff is pleasant and polite and they will remember you from one visit to the next. Most of them seem to have worked for him for years. The office recently moved to a beautiful newly renovated suite in the historic Seattle Tower building on 3rd Avenue. Dr. Prince will soon be using a new type of dental x-ray equipment that reduces a patient’s exposure to x-rays by 90%. One thing I especially like about Dr. Prince’s office is they do not pressure you to have work done that you don’t want. They let you as the patient make informed decisions. So far, I’ve had nothing but good results from my visits to Dr. Prince.

I have been consigning vintage and designer clothes and accessories at Le Frock for a couple of years now. During that time I’ve come to know the store’s staff and I have found them to be honest and professional. They are selective about what they will accept on consignment, so basically if you go there to shop for vintage or designer clothes, you will be seeing some of the best of what is available in Seattle (they carry clothes and shoes for both men and women). As a consigner at Le Frock, I’ve had very good results selling my items. Anyone who loves vintage or who would like to buy designer wear at a fraction of its original price should check out this store. It is on East Pine Street next to several other interesting consignment and boutique shops. The store is small and the space does seem cramped. They have so much great jewelry, I wish they had more display space and better lighting to showcase these items. It would be great if they could expand their space and have more room to better display their merchandise. If you love vintage accessories (shoes, hats, jewelry) this is a great store to visit. Lots of 1950s and 1960s rhinestone and costume jewelry, vintage cufflinks, sometimes an interesting pair of vintage shoes. And then, there is also some spectacular contemporary designer apparel on display! New items seem to arrive all the time. They also have a website where you can shop online.

I went to City Hair on Capitol Hill when someone I know (who always looks great) recommended this hair salon. In the course of several months I had three haircuts from three different stylists and I was so disappointed – it was like each haircut was worse than the last one. I have gone to a number of hair salons in Seattle and stylists have told me that my hair is easy to cut – I wear it short so cutting it should not be a big deal. I have to say my experience at City Hair was disappointing to say the least. The stylists are friendly and it is not like they aren’t trying to give you a good cut – but what a waste of money! And that reminds me of two other things. The first time I called to make an appointment I asked how much they charged. I was quoted one price on the phone, but after receiving a mediocre trim of my short hair, they charged me a higher price then what I had been quoted. The second time, the stylist rang up my haircut himself. I gave him a large bill and after he made change he held the money in his hand and asked me if he could keep it as a tip! The cut was so poor, so not what I wanted, that I wasn’t planning on tipping him, but I was too embarrassed to ask for my change, so I just said, “sure, keep it.”

I’m a student at Seven Star Women’s Kung Fu in Seattle where we have just celebrated the school’s 25th anniversary, recognizing four generations of “women teaching women” martial arts. Seven Star is one of the few all-women’s martial art schools in the country. One of the great things about an all-women’s school is the amount of support we give each other, both on an emotional level and also by understanding the training needs of women. For example, the school provides free child care and offers both daytime and evening classes to help with busy schedules. Also, as an all-women’s school, Seven Star students have an opportunity to learn not only martial arts but also practical, street-wise safety skills especially geared to women. You can attend classes that teach you how to deal with verbal harassment at work or on the street and how to physically protect and defend yourself. Just the self-defense part of the training program makes signing up for classes at Seven Star well worth your consideration. Seven Star is also unusual because it is democratically run. Unlike traditional martial arts schools, Seven Star is run by a steering committee made up of students and teachers. We have an all-school meeting once a month when everyone can vote on issues that are important to the school (we even took a vote on what color to paint the walls!). If you are thinking about self-defense or martial arts training, please visit the school’s website for more information. (By the way, you don’t have to be fit to start marital arts training – you become fit as you train. And you don’t have to be young. We have had students ranging from 13 to over 60 join our classes.)

Bidadoo.com is a service that sells your items on eBay. When I recently inherited some vintage items that I did not have room for, I used Bidadoo as my eBay “salesperson” and they did a great job. The staff will examine your items and research their value. They then write a lengthy description of your items for eBay and include multiple professional looking photographs of the items on eBay’s website. Bidadoo’s photos are very clear and well-lit. They are much better than most of the photos you see on eBay. The descriptions they wrote were thorough and accurate. The staff was knowledgeable and honest about what my items were worth. So far I have sold three items using Bidadoo and I plan to use them again. I had a few items that did not meet their $75 minimum, and they gave me the names of other consignment services that might sell these for me. If you have things you would like to sell but don’t want the hassle of doing it yourself, I would definitely recommend Bidadoo.com.

Fury is a great women’s consignment store on East Madison Street in Seattle. It is a delightful consignment boutique offering new and gently used women’s clothes and accessories, including jewelry, scarves, shoes and handbags. I have frequented the store for over a decade. The store is overflowing with a large selection of current top-quality and designer labels at a fraction of the original price. They have everything from sportswear to beautiful designer evening wear. It is a treat just to browse through their selection and new items arrive every week. This is a small, locally-owned store with a gracious sales staff. The store is adorable! It’s like a European boutique tucked away in a cluster of shops and restaurants on East Madison Street, many of which are worth a visit.
