As unpretensious as its name, the Barber Shop on Commonwealth Avenue is old-fashioned and no nonsense. It's a BARBER, ok? Not a stylist. With a real barber pole outside and real wicker chairs and fine magazines insided, come here for a great haircut -- every time. Paul the barber has been at it for a long time, and he's very, very good at his craft. Wife, Trudy, does manicures. Paul gets very busy so call ahead for an appointment. You'll keep coming back.

Your dog loves to get a shave and a bath. Sure he does. At Doggone It, it sure seems like it. They really know how to give a great haircut and a bath here. And you can just tell, they love the dogs and the dogs love them. Somehow, the cutest dogs in town come here to be groomed. Maybe it's the cleverly-themed bandanas they wrap the dogs in after a bath -- maybe it's the best treats woofing can buy. Whatever it is, dogs just love to hang out here and they get treated like the kings and queens we all know they are.

If you like your Margaritas watered down and your fajitas as bland as a Wendy's cheeseburger, then this uninspired diner is for you. The staff may really be Mexican, but somehow they seem to have geared the fare and even the decor to the Disneyworld set (making accomodations to the over-privileged, obnoxious pre-pubescent set -- family style?) You'll probably have a better experience and better food at Appleby's.

The line goes out the door of this unassuming pub in West Newton (in part because there's not much room to wait for a table). However, the long wait can be worthwhile if a nice pub meal is what you're hankering for. Comfort food like shepherd's pie was good, the Murphy's was creamy, and the atmosphere jolly, just like the scene at its sister pub, OHara's in Newton Highlands.

The selection of tequilas is very tidy at this Mexican chain outpost with a surprisingly fabulous location. The terrace looks out on the Charles River, and the sun sets into the water. The melted cheese starter is good and the flutas are crispy. I wouldn't sit inside, probably, but if you are looking at the water, life is good.

Tapas are fun, and at this lively Moody Street venue, they're fun and good. The sangria is delicious, and in the summer they open up the front windows of the bar area to the street. The scallops in saffron sauce are delicious, and the tiny lamb chops are delectable. Very busy after work Mondays through Frideays.

You can run into La Rotisserie for a quick meal before a movie at the Chestnut Hill Cinema. Fittingly for a rotisserie, the focus is on meat. Every day, a different roast is featured (leg of lamb or roast pork, for example), and they keep on serving, with a choice of two sides, until they run out. There are a few tables in the this tight space, so someone should save seats while the other orders.

There is a different special every night of the week at Aquataine Bis, and the accent is on traditional bistro selections. The steak frites is a dependable choice, but try the more adventurous offerings, because the execution is usually excellent. The atmosphere is chic and makes a nice background for a special occasion meal. They will serve late into the evening for Newton.

A funky bar sets the mood for this good barbecue joint on Moody Street. You can choose between South Carolina style (clear, vinegar based sauce) or traditional sweet red sauce for ribs, chicken, and beef. The sweet potato fries and creamy cole slaw make nice sides and the cornbread has a crispy crust. They will cater a private party on the premises.

The raw seafood appetizers are good if pricey, but the dinner entrees are too small to be satisfying. The food is overspiced, if it's a spicy preparation, and too bland if it's not. The bar is large and is a nice meeting place for those wanting to sip some wine and swallow a half dozen oysters. For dinner, I think it's forgettable.
