Donna Karan is best know for her signature color, black, and her body hugging silhouettes.
This store is home to her high end collection. Dresses hover well over $5000. There is a grand staircase and a small courtyard adding a bit of romance to the store. The collections can feel a bit sparse in this stark environment.
Worth a visit but DKNY is much more fun.

Tucked into a quiet spot off Madison this little place is a perfect spot to rejuvenate after a long day for shopping or museum going.
The little sandwiches are hot and tasty. Clever fillings too.
But the best thing to order is their hot chocolate--the best in the city. Rich and a bit bitter--you can tell they use the good stuff in here. Perfect with a biscotti. You'll be ready to tackle more shops in no time at all.

Lunch is a big business for EJ's. They have a variety of tempting and filling salads. The delivery is quick and efficient and the prices are right on target for a working crowd. You'll see their delivery guys racing all over on their bicycles.
The burgers and sandwiches are also nice. Anything with bacon on it is a hit in y book.
Dining in is a loud and anxious experience. There is nothing charming about this noisy and crowded establishment. Add them to your speed dial, skip the visit.

Di you think printed pants, and madras went out of style years ago and had disappeared from the fashion scene?
Well you are partly correct, it did fall out of fashion. BUt J McLaughlin is still offering up the preppy gear to those stuck in the 1980's. This stately clothing is boxy lacks sex appeal. On the plus side it is bright and cheerful and appear to make the matronly women of the Hampton's/Upper East Side ilk happy.
Find your quilted jackets and pineapple handbags here too.

This tiny bistro is a nice quiet spot for midweek meals or a glass of red with the girlfriends.
The staff will start you off with some tasty and salty olives and then pour you a generous glass of wine. If you can stay for a meal, the food is quite good. Nothing too heavy or complicated.
The chicken dishes are a good bet. As are the salads. Quiet atmosphere lends itself to pleasant conversations.

Gracious Home knows a good market. They've become indispensable to the Upper East SIders who are constantly tweaking their living spaces.
The used to have free delivery (sadly that has gone the way of the dinosaurs), but they'll still delivery all of your goodies for a pretty cheap fee.
THe lighting section is inspiring and I love perusing the knobs and latches. THey have every cleaning supply know to man. Staff is brusque but efficient.
Great return policy.

I've been running for more than 15 years. I know a good footwear establishment when I see it and this is the spot where I come to purchase my running shoes.
The staff is well trained and polite. They don't try to upsell and they focus on fit and customer satisfaction. I like the test run policy. They'll let you slip on a pair of running shoes (please don't call them sneakers) and zip around the block.
Prices aren't the best, you could probably find what you want cheaper on the Internet. But the service and staff more than make up for the cost differential.
New York Road Runner discount offered.

This place is all about the burgers. Big and juicy and quite straightforward. There is nothing pretentious about this spot. It's the only place in the Upper East Side to kick back with a cold beer and leave your inhibitions about eating with your hands at the door.
The round fries are extra and worth your time and energy. The spinach salad is a nice accompaniment for the greasy on the burger. THey do sell turkey burgers for the non read meat crowd.
Cash only.

Haru is a great mid week spot to nip your sushi cravings in the bud. Grab a date or a pal and sidle up to the bar for a fun and low key evening.
Arrive early and don't try to walk in on weekends. The Upper East Siders like their raw fish and they aren't afraid to throw and elbow or two to get a good table.
The sake menu is pretty good and the staff is polite. Try some of the salads as a starter and be sure to let the chef tempt you into a daily special.

The aisles are cramped and all the produce and groceries are overpriced, but they do price the fish fairly and the displays make my mouth water.
The staff is sweet--especially considering the nightmares of customers they have to deal with on a daily basis. They even give me cold paks when I have to lug my fish back to Brooklyn.
