Bloomingdales is wonderful at offering a wide selection of brands. The cosmetic department has quit and array of potions and lotions.
The home department is a great place to outfit the entire home, from mattress to toothbrush holder. You won't find any huge bargains, but you'll find lots of name brands and at sale time it feels like you may be getting a deal.
The clothing and footwear selection is safe. Not hot new designers, but enough fashion to keep it interesting. The handbag department feels tired. They do better at shoes and makeup.
Great Juniors department--best in the city?

Niketown is great place to see the latest in NIke engineering and to watch foreign tourist plunk down cash for the latest and greatest sneaks.
The rest of us should steer clear. If you want sport-specific gear got to a running shop, golf shop, tennis shop or Paragon Sports.
The staff here knows about the brand, they are not steeped in sports knowledge.
There is some cool memorabilia to keep you entertained as you weave through the store.

The store is laid out for tourists to enjoy window shopping an experiencing that Audrey Hepburn moment...looking at diamonds but only being able to afford sterling silver.
The mid-country tourists swarm this place on weekends. I don't know how the staff puts up with the lookey-loos. But put up they do.
It's still a great place to get classy graduation gifts.

The flagship store is sweet shade of lavender (perhaps a bit treacly). Lots of plump pillows ans gilded mirrors give it a boudoir feel--perfect for slipping on little nothings of shoes.
The staff drips with hunger for your plastic. They should learn to be a little less eager. Oh and yes, the shoes are delicious.

There are plenty of professional shoppers here (the type who spend daddy's or hubby's money) and many of them bring their screaming tots (yokes). Alternatively there are sleek business folks from the fashion world--the staff does a great job of keeping the two groups separate.
The food is priced as if it were cashmere and the service has an edge, but the room is quite hip and the menu is sumptuous.

Down below the shopping area of Nicole Farhi's flagship store is a splendid spot for lunch.
The sprawling dining area gets light filtered from the street level, so it doesn't seem dark or cavernous.
The lunch menu is light and inventive. With tempting salads and mains. Wines by the glass are well selected and offer a proper accompaniment to the lovely food.
This meal feels like a treat and hey, don't we deserve it>

The pharmacists are nice and friendly. The health products are all way overpriced. In a nutshell, get your sun screen elsewhere.
When it comes to cosmetics, they have a nice array of products. The sales people are pleasant and the location is great for all the Park Avenue folks.

Zitomers is a fun place to browse for skincare products and toys for tots. They have a great selection of hair do-dads, clips and barrettes.
They have every lotion and jelly know to woman to prevent wrinkles and turn back time. The layout is cramped and the pharmacy is near the back creating a log jam.
Once I had to buy diapers here (it was an emergency) and they worked out to be about $4 per diaper. I hope my daughter appreciated her high priced poop collectors.

Lady's who lunch and the men who work to pay for these lunches make up the dinners at this swank Madison Avenue spot.
The food is really secondary. The mains reason people come is for the scene and to be seen.
The menu has the standard salads, steak frittes and the like. Expensive wine is par for the course (or should I say overpriced wine). Staff is snotty, but I imagine they earn their keep catering to their high maintenance clientèle.

This small eurocentric spot is a charming place to grab a nibble. The prices are high and the service affected, but it is great fun to watch all the French folks act suave and superior. They even sneak in a cigarette here and there.
At night this place has been known to get a bit raucous and start blaring disco. During the dining hours the loud pops of champagne are about as rowdy as it gets.
The food is fair, the atmosphere is the main reason to go.
