For me, Zocalo wins hands down. This sleepy little Upper East SIde spot comes alive during the 2 for 1 margarita happy hour. Let me tell you two of these puppies can send you to a very happy place.
Not only do they know how to mix drinks, they know how to mix avocados into the most mouth watering guacamole you'll taste. And their chips are fresh, crisp and oh so salty--YUM!
While I usually busy myself with consuming my body weight in chips, salsa and gauc, I have also tried the apps. The quesadillas are good, but nothing to writer home about.
Stick to the liquids and the green solids.

I get suckered into eating here at least once year. It's always the same thing stale chips, watery salsa and weak service.
We actually got hassled for bringing our strollers into the EMPTY outdoor deck. Give me a break, we were providing about 50% of the afternoon's business.
The food is greasy and boring. The sole bright spot is the guacamole--which is average--but better than everything else on the menu.
While they offer a wide array of margaritas, we were not bowled over by our drinks (and I only had one--don't worry I wasn't a SUI--strolling while intoxicated).

The vegetarian BLT si terrific and the salads are all so fresh and packed with flavor. The meals are delivered to your table by a friendly staff. While catering to vegans, even hearty steak eaters will be satisfied with the lusty portions of greens and veggies.
Order a pot of herbal tea on a wintry day and enjoy slowing down with a wholesome meal at this spot.

In all seriousness, there are some spots like Taim that can fill up even the most rapacious vegan. These hearty portions are just what the holistic doctor may have ordered (to go that is). It's a great way to satisfy your craving for Mediterrean food.
The "green" falafel are tasty. But I can't imagine they re any less greasy than lamb meat. Oh well, the hummus and tabbouleh are savory.
The whole wheat pitas are a but on the dry side, but that's what hummus is for!

Let's face it. This spot is all about the setting. They can get away with murder in the kitchen (and they mostly do).
Years ago, an out of town friend insisted on eating here. The one time I ate here I had a dry piece of fish and limp veggies. Since then, I stick to a liquid diet when visiting and things have been great.
Arrive early on a nice day and stake out a spot. It will get crowded. Best bet for service is to sidle up to the bar and leave a big tip on your first trip.
I always drink champagne when visiting. Something about being in nature makes me want the bubbly!

Serafina's are all over the place. This particular establishment has a great open air dining room on the second level of the restaurant.
When the weather is fine, they crank open the doors and the breezes roof through. Makes for a delightful lunch after shopping of museum going.
The pizza's are always tasty and I also like their carpaccio. The salads are crisp and lightly dressed.
These are classic New York dinners and they even tolerate kids. Great for parents who still enjoy fine dining and aren't willing to make many compromises.

Most of my fellow diners were in suits and seemed to enjoy digging in to their large and juicy steaks.
I dined with a girlfriend. We like a good Bordeaux and a nice piece of rare meat, so we had a grand time. The toy filled ceiling is a little silly and the prices are inflated, but it's worth a trip to see what all the fuss is about. There is no romance to the room. I repeat, this is not a great date spot.
Skip the Caesar salad prepared tableside. Way too heavy. While you are at it skip, lunch, you'll need every bit of your appetite to finish your meal here.
Great wine list, polished staff. Look for the jockey's out front and grin that you are supporting a NYC landmark.

Calling Milos a Greek restaurant is a bit unfair. YOu won't see any of the traditional shtick here. It is more like an Aegean restaurant. They focus on fresh fish in light preparations.
The fish are set out on ice so patrons can gaze at the offering s and select a fish. This helps the restaurant sell a lot of very expensive fish. The good news is the kitchen will cook it too perfect.
The fish is then brought to the table and served by and expert. It's quite an elegant process.
Feel free to order off the menu. The grilled octopus is light and lacks the standard chewiness of other spots. The tomato salad is another great starter. The white Greek wine by the glass is refreshing and crisp.
The fixed menu limits you from a select your fish experience, but it's fast, and with give you a great meal before the theater.
Dessert is standard stuff, better to splurge on fish.

The quintessential Sunday food in NYC is the lox and bagel combo. You really aren't an official New Yorker until you've sampled the goodies from Zabars.
They slice their salmon razor thin and provide the best cream cheese options available. The bagels are chewy without requiring a mouth workout. It's simply heavenly.
Aside from this specific treat there are other reasons to visit. Namely the olives and cheese selection. All you need is a decent bottle of wine and you've got a cocktail party covered.
Great staff--old school and sharp.
