Candlepin reigns supreme at Sacco's, and you'll find everyone from the novie to the leagues here. The place offers a nostalgic charm in spite of its simple (okay, old) interior, and you won't find bowling for much cheaper. The staff may seem a bit surly or distracted on occasion, but simply interpret it as local charm and you'll still leave satisfied by a night of cheap bowling. And don't forget to drop a handful of quarters in the jukebox, but don't do it while there's a Red Sox game on because they turn the music volume down then!

There's little you won't find inside Cardullo's packed walls. Walking the perimiter of the store, you'll go from deli items -- any sandwich with brie will be a hit -- to spreads to teas to chocolates to wines. There's more in between like the most expansive selection of honey you'll find in the area, a counter of truffles, and a refrigerated case with rich butters and creams. If you're looking for an imported food item, this is the first place to check, and if not, go anyway as you're sure to find something you can't live without.

Though it can be extremely difficult to get a seat at Tealuxe, when you can do so, this is the perfect place to tuck in with a book and a warm cup of tea. The tea menu here is expansive, and everything is available loose to take home as well. They also sell tea accessories, but you'll find these cheaper at your local kitchenware store, so stick to the hot drinks and tins of tea.

Not quite an old-fashioned candy store, but pretty darn close, Hidden Sweets offers bins of candies along with shelves filled with all your boxed favorites. But the candy is just the beginning here, and behind the sweets, you'll find tons of items ranging from buttons and gag gifts to lovely keepsakes and gorgeous gift wrap. There are also Boston, Red Sox, and Harvard t-shirts, and other Boston-themed trinkets, so this is also the perfect place to pick up a local memento.

It still takes some scouring of the racks, but the Jasmine Sola Warehouse store on Commonwealth Ave. offers some of the gorgeous clothes you'll find at their other stores at cheaper prices. Items here are marked down dramatically -- which still doesn't make them cheap in most cases -- so you'll find deals on the season's looks from skirts to tops to jewelry. Most of the jewelry is full price though, so stick to the clothing racks here.

The most gorgeous clothes grace the windows of Jasmine Sola, but that's where they'll stay at these prices. Nothing is cheap here, but it's all pretty to look at. Browse for fun jewelry and accessories, along with a fantastic shoe selection, but stick to the warehouse store in Boston for clothing deals.

Darwin's is just slightly outside of Harvard Square, which makes it a welcome respite from the bustle of the square and a lovely location in which to relax a bit with a good book and a bite to eat. One side of the store offers an array of sandwiches, quaintly named for area streets, along with chips and sides. The other side provides pastries and coffee with a seating area. Staff on the sandwich side are notoriously disorganized, so expect your sandwich to take anywhere from 5-10 minutes. Staff on the coffee side are quicker, but less friendly. Seating may be difficult to come by at times, but even if it's to go, the sandwiches here are worth the trip. The Hubbard Park is my favorite -- but get extra napkins, as these huge sandwiches can get a bit messy.

Burdick's serves the thickest, richest cup of hot chocolate I've ever had, which isn't necessarily a good thing. Although tons of people flock to the store for its signature beverage, I find it akin to liquid pudding and would rather stick to the uniquely flavored chocolates, delicious apple tart, and the best madelines you'll ever eat. Super crowded in the winter, with a line out the door, so stick to it on weekdays and summers if you don't care about the hot chocolate.

The ice cream selection here isn't huge, but what's available is fantastic. Creamy and flavorful options such as burnt sugar and Vienna fingers satisfy the sweet tooth, but coffee is also available. Toscanini's also serves fantastic sandwiches, and the Harvard Square location serves only vegetarian ones, so in turn, you'll find more vegetarian sandwich options here than at the other stores (and more than pretty much anywhere in the square, for that matter). The staff here are always friendly and helpful, but plan to get your items to go as there is rarely space to sit indoors or outside.

J.P. Lick's Davis Square location is great for their late hours and consistently friendly staff, in addition to the awesome ice cream flavors they serve. All the standards, plus a few with more flare, are available here. There is a good selection of sorbets and frozen yogurts, and the frappes are good too. The coffee oreo ice cream here remains my favorite ice cream of all time. And the store earns a few bonus points for having a cone stand so that you don't have to maneuver the treat you just ordered while you're trying to pay for it.
