This store on a side-street near Lord & Taylor is a great place for bargain beauty products from a good variety of manufacturers. It is highly addictive, as they offer every possible kind of cosmetic, from foundations to hundreds of lipsticks for reduced prices. Some of the products you can tell are overstocks of samples from the "gift with purchase" programs, but if that doesn't bother you, you can get great discounts on lines like Clinique of Estee Lauder for a fraction of the retail cost.
You will also find limited runs on non-sample MAC or Bobbi Brown stuff, in addition to other high-end lines, so keep checking in. You will find odds and ends for haircare, personal care, and fragrances, but this truly is all about the make-up. Too irresistible of a selection to resist buying another new lipstick or eyeliner.

Artcraft is my source for restoring my mother's designer bags, which she had the foresight to keep after buying them over 20 years ago. An old Hermes hobo bag from the 70s, which had some minor stains and cracks in the leather, was returned to me in terrific shape and the fabric was supply and shiny.
I highly recommend them - whether you've incurred a recent stain on your pocketbook or trying to restore a vintage bag. However, they do not promise miracles, just their very best efforts on your purses.

Sure, it's on the pricey side, but everything else about this shop just works. Despite the small space, it's laid out very well and the clothes are a beautifully eclectic mix of feminine and bohemian. They favor a more colorful spectrum and are curated from a mix of better known and independent designers. The owners are great, as they're very sweet and helpful while you are trying on different styles. A nice environment combined a great selection of product.

Hedra Prue is a great little shop that was in Nolita long before the fashion invasion of the neighborhood. If you want an updated look of the Jackie O variety, this could be your spot.
Their merchandise have the common denominator of being fashion-forward without being unwearable. This pertains to their clothing and accessories, which are never too frilly or too contemporary, just the right mix of being modern with a little bit of retro thrown in. This is my source for Lauren Moffat clothing, whose styles give me that cleaner, updated version of the 70s look that I like.

Express is now back on my radar, after many years of bypassing this store in search of other options. There's been no changes in the store design, but in the clothes that they offer. On the retail front, that's a good sign instead of pouring money into store re-design.
Not only do they make great, comfortable basics, but they now offer stylish options as well. I find the pants to be very well tailored and have become a big fan of the 'Editor' fit. In addition, the liberal use of cotton, combined with some nice cuts, ensures that I feel both comfortable and fashionable at the same time. Most noticeably is the change in the overall designs, which used to be a wonky, but are now funky without being overtly trendy. Thumbs up to the transformation.

The good thing about Orva is that it's a little bit of a break from the chain-store mall that 86th Street is quickly becoming. It's like a big boutique for women with a department store mentality, offering you nearly everything you need under one roof - clothing, handbags, shoes, hosiery, workout gear, etc. You could easily purchase a whole outfit from head to toe here.
However, since their renovation last year, the fun has sapped a little bit. The mix of clothing doesn't seem to be as good and the bargains a little less. In spite of this, I still like to check this store out whenever I'm in that area.

Although there are greenmarkets throughout the city on various days, this one is by the most popular. Comprised of independent producers of cheeses, baked goods, meats, and produce for starters, there is a discovery with every turn. This is the place where I first discovered carrots aren't necessarily orange, but purple and green too! Or that fresh grown tomatoes, from the more obscure varieties, could practically constitute a dessert in themselves.
In peak summer and fall months, Whole Foods nearby pales in comparison to this market, both in offerings and the experience. No wonder why local restaurants make a point of buying their ingredients here - this is a true New York experience.

When we're out, about, and in doubt, my friends and I will stop by Belmont Lounge for a drink and good music. The bartenders are great and the DJ has been known to convert the back lounge into a makeshift dance floor, thanks to a great mix of pop, hip hop, and reggae music in the late hours. Add the back garden, which is popular with smokers, and it satisfies most in the crew. The downside as mentioned before are the individual bathrooms, which cause long, sometimes tortuous waits.

Chelsea PIers Bowl looks like almost any suburban bowling alley, except that it's in the city and it's situated right in the middle of the Chelsea Piers complex. It's a very family-friendly place, as it's very clean and well-lit almost to the point of being sterile. They are quite pricey as well, coming up even with Bowlmor, and the shoe rentals and cost of food exacerbate that. I feel that with Bowlmor at least, you get what you pay for - the ambiance and music which accompany your games.

The atmosphere at Bowlmor is great, from the lounge/dining area to the side of the lanes to of course, the lanes themselves. This is a great party place or an alternative to sitting around in a bar with friends. The DJ is always good and the waitresses rotate frequently, ensuring you have been fed and watered.
Thus, it becomes too easy to rack up the games, which are not cheap, and you wind up with a hefty bill to show for it.
