Southwest is situated right by the water, drawing crowds who wish to sit in the open air and enjoy a drink or meal al fresco. But that's the only thing they have going for them. The food is horrible here. One order of crab cakes appeared on the table still frozen inside. As for the drinks, like margaritas, they are only marginally better.
But the service is the worst hands down and the place is just a comedy of errors. On one particular occasion, the restaurant was without power due to an unpaid bill, and they still remained open. Instead of trying to be courteous and appreciating that we still chose to eat there, we were ignored throughout the meal and treated as if they were doing us favors. Don't go here.

There are two branches of this Thai restaurant, and both have disappointed. I consider this safe Thai, where flavors are muted and dishes are just lackluster. This makes it probably a good entry point for people who are just trying out the cuisine, but for veterans this is a no-go.
While the ambiance of the UES location is very nice, in particular, they should have poured all that money into the menu.

Katwalk is a little surprise in the Herald Square area, where aside from the brewpubs and bars, this is the only chic alternative for happy hour. Situated on the same block as Fairchild Publications and the fashion editors it houses, this may be the answer.
It's a more intimate, beautifully designed space with plenty of comfortable seating and nibbles to accompany one of their potent martinis. Happy hour specials almost always include any one of their martinis, so definitely check that out. You enjoy them either on the main level or upstairs in the lounge area, which is also great for private parties (I know, having been to a few there). Note that they are quite strict about the dress code, in keeping with the atmosphere, and don't permit shorts or flip flops.

Squabbling among family members has kicked off the much fabled chain of Grand Sichuan restaurants, each dissident branch taking a further departure from the original. The Canal Street location is the original and still produces the most satisfactory of Chinese dishes of them all.
Sweet and sour chicken that's crispy, not soggy? Check. Drunken crab that makes you feel like you're drunk from the deliciousness of it? Check. Sea cucumber which you've never had before, but will make you a convert? It's here. The food is not complicated, well prepared, and most dishes are a revelation. This is the only Grand Sichuan, the rest are just pretenders.

Boom seems like it has been around forever. Part restaurant and part lounge adds up to a night spot with a lot of attitude. This place prides itself on its very European clientèle, and the attitude to boot, it's been one long-running sure thing since it opened (sometime back in the 90s I think).
The food is very Italian, very good, and very typical of most popular restaurants in the city - heavy on the pastas, meats and fish. They have a very good, extensive wine list and full bar. As places like Pastis have become caricatures of themselves, visitors will be impressed by this cosmopolitan slice of New York life.

Some places talk gourmet, act gourmet, look gourmet...but are they really gourmet? This place IS gourmet, even though it might not look like it at first glance. This is a simple store with no semblance of decor and a sometimes surly staff who are extremely knowledgeable. But understand that the food here is what matters, nothing else.
It is definitely on a smaller scale compared to other food shops, but the produce, cheeses, and pastas here are unbelievable. Cuts of cured Italian meats will probably never make it to your fridge, as you'll be sneaking a slice here and a slice there, until it's gone by the time you get home.

This ice cream shop on Bleecker Street is immensely popular and I can understand why. They have an enormous selection of flavors, all of which are apparently homemade as part of a tradition by the owner's family. It's like this whole art that's applied to the creation of the flavors, thus justifying the higher cost for a cone here. They've got the spectrum of flavors covered, from light fruits to rich, rich chocolates, and some weird, experimental flavors noted as specials for the day. Champagne ice cream, anyone?

I've been going to Showroom Seven for years to their sample sales and I'm convinced theirs is the best. High up above 7th Avenue is a non-descript back room containing rack after rack of clothing from a coterie of designers including Ghost, Pedro Zillia, and Orla Kiely, for starters. They really do have an immense mix of clothing, jewelry, and handbag designers here, for which you might to have to do little picking through. This sale is not for minimalists, as they have a truly eclectic, funky, sometimes bohemian, sometimes feminine mix of clothing. Always different, never boring.

Grand Central definitely is an interesting location to have a lingerie shop. This tiny shop, however, has a great selection of classy, not cheesy, lingerie. They usually run more in cost than Victoria's Secret, but nothing like La Perla. Names include Natori, Leigh Bantivoglio, and Only Hearts, so you know you're dealing with the good stuff here.
The staff vacillates between being very helpful or not helpful at all, so come to expect being on the receiving end of either when you go in. And I do wish they had more than one fitting room.

This Food Emporium stands out from the rest in that it's nestled into the Queensboro Bridge, hence the unofficial nickname "Bridge Market".
Food Emporium overall has a reputation for being clean and being on the higher-end of chain supermarkets in the city. That more than applies to this branch. It doesn't have the feel of a supermarket, as it had to accommodate to the zoning of the bridge. As a result, huge windows and high ceilings giving you the feeling of being a gourmet market as you pick through fruits and scan the cases for your frozen meals. Perhaps it's just perspective, but this place just "feels" better than your typical supermarket, whether it's a Food Emporium or not.
