Gill's Tavern is known as a steak house, but I know it better as a place to hear great jazz & have reasonably priced drinks. It's a lovely (cozy) atmosphere, has a warm & intimate feel to it. I am unable to comment on the food, as I haven't eaten there yet. They've got a fully stocked bar, wine list & ample beer choices.

Unfortunately, the Publix located on Apalachee Parkway was forced to move its location (due to issues with the building, I hear) to the corner of the Blairstone Road extension & Park Avenue. The new building is owned by the grocery store, built especially to the store's demands & is thus more "modern." There's a big emphasis on produce, as is the trend with newer grocery stores. They've got a bountiful selection of nearly everything one could want in a grocery, minus the bulk bins of the North Monroe store. [sadly, I might add.] The shopping center has even more to offer, as it contains Panera (coffee, internet), along with other strip-mall offerings. I don't know where all the grocery shoppers materialized from, because the old publix wasn't always busy, but this new version is seemingly frequented by half of Tallahassee, which means that your grocery trip can also serve as a social outing. Even with being busy, the checkout process goes rapidly. Publix is my favorite overall, and this one meets my standards.

Cool Grindz Cafe is located in the same shopping center as the "Lake Ella" Publix - the original of the two in town. The cafe supports and encourages a diverse group of folks, students, young, middle & older professionals, social groups, folks on first dates, etc. They've got a wide range of drink choices, including traditional caffeinated coffee based mixtures, a wide array of "Stash" teas, wines & beers, both domestic & imports. The menu's a bit slim in the "real-food" category, just quiche. But if it's sweets of breads you want, there's plenty from which to choose. The seating is varied - small tables inside, large ones outside, which is a lovely seating area - complete with amazing plants & a pond with fountain & frogs. They've give 1 hour of wi-fi with a purchase. An over-sized flat-screen tv inside, seemingly with CNN nonstop, music (pretty good) on the overhead speakers. Certainly worth a visit.

Located on bustling Main Street in downtown Sarasota, Il Panificio has been a longtime favorite of mine. I've been an occasional customer since my first year (2000) at New College of Florida, located a pleasant biking distance from downtown. Just last month, when in town to enjoy the Sarasota Film Festival, I strolled down Main on the look-out for a food establishment that called my name. Il Panificio it was, drawn as I was by the delicious odors that met me on the street. Their specialities are square sandwiches, grilled (smashed) within a hot press when ordered and pizza slices. They offer other food-stuffs, but I can't comment on them from personal experience. They've got two coolers full of various beverages, including water from the mountains in Italy (I think - those trendy tall, glass bottles). Oh yes, I nearly forgot - they are a bakery - so be sure to consider stopping by when in pursuit of fresh bread.

What's your favorite mediterranean food? Sahara probably has it - tabouli, hommus, baba ganoush, greek salad, gyros, grape leaves, the list goes on. They serve their good food up in platters or on flat bread (gyros) about five minutes after the order is placed. The dining area is spacious & inviting, especially the booth-seating. An excellent choice for take-out, as they're affordable & fast.

The daily requirements are respect for self & others, as well as participation in end of the day "clean-up." All classes & activities are optional, and usually are designed based on student interest. Grassroots is based on the free-school model that originated at Summerhill School in England (founded in 1921, still in operation). The idea is that people learn best when they are allowed to approach learning on their own terms, in a free and open environment. I've seen bright, self-motivated people come out of the school and continue their education in more formal institutions. They are folks who prosper & grow in ways that benefit society as a whole.

The school of my childhood, and now the school of my niece, the Magnolia School is a place of joy & exploration for its students, teachers & parents. Subtitled: "A School For Active Learning," it indeed lives up to its mandates. In order to learn about theatre, Shakespeare & team-work, the entire school (K-8) banded together to stage a full-length version of McBeth, old English dialogue retained. As the basis for their study of biology & agriculture, the students have a year-round garden. To learn about machines, each student built & demonstrated a "simple machine" at a school fair. This is a place where children are allowed to be children, allowed to play & get dirty, to learn through trial & error and most importantly, to learn by doing.

As it's the discount theatre in town, their biggest selling point is the utter affordability of the tickets. The offering is not fantastic from a cinephile perspective, but that's where the critic's instincts come into play. For those eager to see the newest releases ... go elsewhere. But for those looking for entertainment, and perhaps artistic representations of life and humanity - Movies 8 has plenty to offer.

Located on North Monroe Street, about 1/2 mile south of the Tallahassee Mall, same side of the Monroe. Simple & unassuming, a delightful treat. Includes both a traditional bar, with daily drink specials, as well as booth & table seating. Food is served everyday from 11 am til 2 am, one of the few places in town that can boast as such. A full menu, including greasy spoon specials - omelets, etc as well as other diner favorites - sandwiches, soups, salads. A friendly crowd, non-stop sports television, diversity of folks. A treasure on North Monroe.
