This place rocked my world today. It's a family owned butcher that's been around for 40 years (I'm actually only repeating this from a reliable 3rd party, it may not be true) that only does lamb. We're trying to pit roast a lamb this weekend, so we went in and said, "we're going to have 6 to 8 people, and we want a lot of leftovers." 30 seconds later, tow legs of lam were hanging on a scale. 2 minutes later, they had been run through a terrifying buzz saw, wrapped up, and handed to us. Another minute later, we'd paid $2.75/lbs. for our lamb and gone to reclaim our car from it's illegal parking spot.

This place is good for extremely fresh fish. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The prices are high, but the products are of very high quality. If you want fish that you can eat raw or super-rare, this is a good bet. Overall, this place is pretty darn good, though you certainly can't go here unless you're willing to spend a decent amount of money.

This place is the place to go if you want to pay $10 for a 40 of malt liquor. Imagine if a hipster bar and a frat boy bar had a love child that neither one would claim, and you've got Elm Street Liquors.
Pros:
> I wasn't paying for my drinks
> The skylight is cool
> There seemed to be a group of regulars who knew each other and liked each other
Cons:
> The drinks are expensive
> The dry martini I ordered was $10, small, loaded with vermouth, and managed to be warm in spite of the ice chunks floating at the top
> It's too loud to talk
If you like places that are fashionable for no reason, this is your place. I doubt I'll ever return.

If you're looking for a nice dinner in Chicago, Salpican is a great place to do it. Though I've never been to Frontera Grill or Topolobampo, I've heard that Salpican is every bit as good as these venerable institutions.
The place was crowded, and we felt like we were in the way, huddled over near the bathroom with our margaritas for 15 minutes while we waited for our table. That was the only remotely negative part of the whole experience (I wasn't paying, so there was no opportunity to be overwhelmed by the check. If I had been paying, we wouldn't have gone here, but some day when I'm making some money, I'll definitely come back.)
All the food was delicious, well-prepared, and well-presented. There were a range of more and less traditional offerings (chiles rellenos, to tequila and poblano ice cream-- both great.) The margaritas were fantastic, as was the mescal flight, as was the tequila flight.
The menu changes every week, although I believe that about 60% of the menu is constant. I hope I'll get a chance to back to try some more of their dishes.

University Market is the place to go for overpriced grocery items on 57th Street. They carry high quality goods, for very high prices, and they're small enough to insure that they don't have what you're looking for. The deli in back does make a mean sandwich, though, and last time I was there, the sandwiches weren't super super expensive (maybe not even super expensive.)

It used to be that place was your standard, massive, unimaginative sports bar; except that on Monday nights they had a special where you could get anything you wanted for $2.50, including Patron, Guinness, whatever.
Now this place is your standard, massive, unimaginative sports bar; except on Mondays you can get whatever you want for $3.50.
For me, this means that my days of patronizing this place are over.

Where else in Chicago can you get a gyros cheeseburger?
Unfortunately, as it turns out, the gyros cheesebruger kind of sucks (ketchup, mustard, and tzatziki were never meant to coexist.) Still, you have to respect them for making it in the first place, and they're good otherwise. Their chopped steak sandwiches, polish sausages, and fries all get the John S. Stamp of Approval. Their prices are pretty good, and their staff is friendly and chill. You aren't going to find anything here that isn't really greasy and bad for you, but it's much better than a soulless corporate fast food place.

Want to watch a world champion baseball team play a home game in Chicago? Want street parking? Half price Monday? Half price Tuesday? $1 hot dogs on Thursday? Solid, winning baseball? World class pitchers that are pitching real (not simulated) games?
Come on down to the beautifully remodeled Sox Park. You're gauranteed to not be sitting behind a pole. There will be street parking no more than 6 blocks away.

The University of Chicago is the 3rd largest employer in the city of Chicago, which is good, because the Pub is technically a private club and you need to be with a U of C employee or student to get in.
Once you're in, you will find a vast number of delicious beers in bottles and one tap, for cheaper than you would normally find them.
There is no sunlight in the pub. The bartenders are very cool. The jukebox is good. The pool table hasn't had new felt for 20 years.

This place isn't for everybody, but boy, it sure is for me. Shan is a Pakistani restaurant tucked away in the back of a convenience store tucked away in the back of a strip mall out past the end of Lake Shore Drive (up in the wilds of the north side, where seldom few venture.) The place is full of men, apparently cab drivers, since the parking lot is always full of taxis, eating spicy food, watching Bollywood movies, and, up until the smoking ban, smoking heavily. The service is great-- fast, friendly, and possibly slightly amused that we're there to begin with. The atmosphere is... well, it's a convenience store, what do you expect? Harsh lighting, formica tables, and musical soap operas in languages you don't understand. The food is plentiful and well-prepared, it ranges from spicy to very spicy, and it's cheap. I've left Shan uncomfortably full of delicious food, and my share of the bill, after tax and tip, was $5.
