I spent last weekend at Doe Bay Resort and had mixed feelings about it. The location is pleasant, but Orcas Island is not my favorite of the islands. The cottage was clean and in good repair, but sort of hotel-like in it's sterility and utilitarianism. It would be a good place to rent if you were going to the San Juan Islands with a busy agenda and just needed a place to crash at night, especially if you were not planning to cook more than a pot of pasta and a side salad. The kitchen had a mini-fridge and a two burner propane stove top, but no oven. The sink was wet-bar sized. The cabin had a four-seat table, but no living area - no comfy chairs, no fireplace, no living 'room' at all. I've been told there are more expansive, funkier cabins to rent, though I didn't have a chance to see inside any others while I was there.

I like to rent cottages for weekend getaways with my puppy and an occasional friend. I have some trouble finding what I like because, for me, the cottage *is* the destination. I'm not going to X location for the food or the tourist attractions, I'm going to get away from the madding crowd and relax by the water with a good book. I'm going to enjoy a little closeness and conversation with a friend by the fire. So I want my cabin to have just the right amount of character and space, and not too many amenities. I don't want a TV or a phone, and I'll bring my own music, thanks. I do want a full kitchen -- meaning a sink, a stove/oven, and more than a mini-fridge, and a reasonable assortment of pots/pans and dishes. Lochaerie Resort has all the things I need, plus a funky, character-loaded atmosphere. Some cabins are too small for my liking, but others are just right. The managers are a little too hands off, and occasionally appear to be intoxicated by something -- maybe just the sun and the water and the fresh air, maybe something more -- but overall, of all the cottages I've rented in WA, these are my favorite. And as an added bonus, they're right on Lake Quinault, are in the middle of a rain forest, and are only 30 miles from the WA coast beaches.

The Greenwood Academy is such a mix of people and ages and styles and skills that you could sit there all day and watch the human parade go by. Which is a good thing, because almost any service takes two or three times longer than at a normal salon. But give 'em credit. They're students. They're learning this craft of making beauty where beauty may be very hard to come by. And most of the time they do a good job. Sometimes, they do a *very* good job. And the prices are fantastic. So if you really, really, want your hair color and cut to be flawless, don't have it done here. But if you're willing to take the gamble and you've got some time to spare, you'll definitely leave with change in your pocket and you'll likely be happy with the job your local student performed.

I'm not a breakfast lover, but you can get me to Wild Mountain Cafe for breakfast any time. It's a caloric splurge that's well worth it. And they make fabulous Bloody Marys too. Other meals there are big and tasty and have a flair, but breakfast is what they do best. Ask to sit in the back room or in the bar if you want to avoid the crowds waiting by the door, especially in the cold, wet, winter months. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is cozy and comforting.

Before I found the Homeowners Club, I'd lost countless hours and many many dollars to contractors who never finished the job, didn't show up when they said they would, or kept raising the cost of the job. Homeowners Club eliminates all these problems. For $48/yr, you get a service that recommends reputable contractors for your job. You call them and tell them what you need, and they have contractors call you. (Even if it's an emergency job.) Once you have all the estimates you want, you sign the one you want to go with and send the signed estimate to the club. No more pouring through the phone book and asking everyone you know if they've ever used Andy's Plumbing service. Even better, you don't pay the contractor. You pay Homeowners Club -- only when the job is completed to your satisfaction -- and then the club pays the contractor.
