I like to take vacations in town (Seattle being my favorite city and all) and the fiance and I stayed at the Vance (pre-Max) Hotel. Then when we saw the new digs, we agreed to fork over the cash to stay over one night. It was fabulous. While the rooms obviously didn't change size that much, it was so hip! Nice beds, down comforters, pillow bar, and yummy restaurant below. The folks were still great, of course.
It's more expensive of course, but I have to say that it has style and that beats a joe shmoe hotel anyway.

When I need a break from all the people milling around, I like to come down to the Sound View Cafe. It's underneath the market, so it's close, but it's a lot less crowded and there's room to sit and enjoy the view (clever name, huh?). They have good sandwiches, breakfast food, etc. Nothing too out of the ordinary. I go there to relax...

Don't worry about exchanging dollars for euros, learning Italian words for cheese, or getting lost in Venice. Just stay here in Seattle and visit DeLaurenti's. Sure, you won't be able to see fancy art or get mobbed by pigeons, but I see that as a plus. They have delicious sandwiches, cheeses, and all the little yummy items that you'd find in Italy...without the long flight. There are other European items as well. It's great for lunch or a laid back first date.

If Powells had apartments, I spend all my time there. I LOVE this place. I can find a section JUST on lofts, then go down a floor and find out all about knitting on Tuesdays with my left hand. I can never spend less than an hour here and if I had my way, it would be four hours easily.
I'm happy that they finally let the customers look stuff up on the computers so the employees can do more important things.
The cafe inside helps keep me there for much longer.
You can get most, if not all, of the books online, but it's not the same as wandering around learning new things.

I can't wait to go back!

It's a cute little hidden place, but most people know where it is because it's so tasty.

I went to AIS for 2.5 years (if you take 5 classes a qtr, you can graduate in two years, but you also will be very tired from not sleeping much). I left because at almost every turn I felt like an automaton being trained to produce. I should have expected as much from a technical school, but I was sad that all I was trained to do was make CD players and cell phones. A lot of my teachers were not at the height of their game and they were far from inspiring. I didn't complete the program because it was too expensive to feel bad about designing products. I wanted more sustainability classes (which is cutting edge) and I wanted more inspiring teachers.

Essential does great organic bread and if you don't buy it here, you can buy it pretty much everywhere else. This place is usually pretty busy, but the line goes quick. It's a great place to stop if you're on a bike ride (the Burke Gilman is paces away) or if you want to have lunch at Gasworks Park.

Ace Hardware usually has nice places. Stephenson seems like the biggest of the Ace Family and the cleanest. The employees are so friendly, I'd hang out there for fun. While they don't have a ton of lumber, you can get that at other mom and pop places...I love the neighborhood feel to this place. Everyone seems happy and productive and it's a pleasure to shop here, especially as a woman. I've always hated Home Depot for it's mega-tude and I'm thankful there are alternatives.
