Clarke’s is my favorite place to go for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a drunken 3:00 am meal. It is conveniently open 24 hours, giving you a wide variety of food choices, whether day or night. The food and service is fast and delicious, and prices are low, geared toward college age hipsters and late-night partiers. Of all the diner-style food offered in Chicago, Clarke’s is number one on my list.

This place has amazing pizza, among many other delicious menu items. They also have a bar, and a bunch of TVs that are constantly playing major baseball or football or whatever games. Pizza-wise, you can opt for deep dish or thin crust, with lots of toppings to choose from, personal or family sized. The waitstaff is very friendly and the prices are pretty cheap. Exchequer is also a great place to go for accommodating a large group of people.

This bar sucks. Although the drinks are better than most other places that try too hard, they are also more expensive than those other places. The decor is sexy and modern, but that does not make up for the DJ's lack of continuity, the smoking rule that says, "Thou shalt not smoke sitting down at your own table," or the ridiculously fancy "webcam projection" mirrors in the bathroom, that show you every shape and color except those of your own reflection. One of the least fun nights I've ever had in Chicago was spent at that bar, not to mention it closed at barely 2 am. I do not recommend this bar if you are looking to have a good time.

I am completely smitten with Nordstrom Rack on State St. in the Loop. It is the perfect place to find great deals on things you desperately need that would cost a fortune elsewhere, such as bath products, houseware, and best of all: SHOES. Not to brag, but last time I went, I found a to-die-for pair of leopard faux-fur BCBG wedges (originally over $100) marked down for $40something. I tried them on and they fit like heaven, so I could not resist taking them home with me. When I got to the check-out counter, I was informed that all items with a pink sticker were marked down an extra "whatever" percent, and I ended up getting the fabulous shoes for only $24. I have also gotten, in the past, Steve Madden sneakers for only about $20 and Diesel heels for only $42. Aside from shoes, they also have an excellent collection of underwear... DESIGNER underwear, for only about $1.50 - $2.00 each. How can you say no to deals like that?

I absolutely detest waiting in the ridiculously long lines at the post office, for example, the big one on Dearborn and Clark. They have to have an electric sign to flash in your face and point you in the right direction every 45 minutes so you know which of their 900 clerk windows to go to. But I've found something better. Actually, I've known about it for a while, but I'm going to spill the beans and share my secret with you all. On the Wabash entrance side (2nd floor) of the Carson Pirie Scott building is the tiniest, cutest post office you'll ever see, but definitely the best. Although they only take cash and cannot do "big post office" things like cash money orders and overnight packages, they have the sweetest employees and NO LINES. They are also affixed to a Ticketmaster, gift-wrapping service, and dry cleaners to fulfill all your needs in one spot. Stay tuned for the next episode of Hidden Treasures.

I have a way of discovering things in the city that really aren't difficult to discover, but not many people know about. My favorite of these "hidden treasures," as I like to refer to them, is in the basement/food court of Marshall Field's on State Street. Amidst the many different sections of food court and billions of tables for eaters to sit, tucked neatly into the corner across from the bookstore, there is: Fruigurt. Although they made smoothies as well, I have never tried one; I am too hooked on the frozen yogurt to go for anything else. Cups come in two sizes... big and ridiculously big, or you can take the classic route and get a cone. I usually go with a ridiculously big cup of vanilla with Oreos on top... in the middle... and at the bottom. And the best part is, as generous as they are with their portions, the price is CHEAP. Only about $2.00 for the regular cup and $3 for the ridiculously large. Try it out... I guarantee you will fall in love as I did.

I have recently become completely obsessed with Jamba Juice, the best smoothie makers in the history of the world. The one I usually go to is on Michigan Avenue, between Madison and Lake Sts. They have a couple couches where you can sit while you wait for your delicious smoothie, and the service is AMAZING. They employ some of the genuinely sweetest people I've ever seen in my life, and they will remember your name every time you come in. With a very wide selection of fruit/mix combinations, Jamba Juice also gives you a choice of a free "boost" with every smoothie you get. Options include, but are not limited to: protein, energy, fiber, etc., so you feel extra healthy when you drink your smoothie, despite the above-average amount of calories they contain. (This does not include "enlightened" smoothies, which are not made with yogurt and therefore have a much smaller caloric range). If you've never tried Jamba Juice before, I feel I should warn you: you WILL be addicted!

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be a candidate for dinner at Pizano's on Tuesday nights (after 9pm). Only two requirements: you must be a student, and you must buy a soda. Pizano's pizzeria/restaurant/bar on Madison St. in the loop indulges poor college kids every Tuesday night starting at nine o'clock. Bring some friends and buy a couple drinks, and you get an entire FREE pie! (You must have at least 2 people though). Their pizza, whether deep dish OR thin crust, is absolutely to die for. And even if it weren't, who cares? It's pretty much free...

Last night, a couple friends and I went out to Cherry Red, off the brown line Diversey stop. Cherry Red is a pretty sexy place, if you've got the money for it. My friend's cousin works the door, so lucky for us, we got in free, thus avoiding the $20 cover charge. You would assume that charging $20 to let you in would make the drinks FREE or at least super cheap, right? WRONG. Six dollars for a shot, four for a beer, and no less than six for a mixed drink. Even though the place is a little pricy, it is definitely worth it. The guys are hot, the girls are hotter, and the DJs really know how to rock it. There's a crowded dance floor once the night gets going, three bars (one in every direction you turn), and big red comfy couches romanticized by candle-lit coffee tables. I definitely recommend Cherry Red as one of the hottest bars in Chicago, but a bit too expensive to make an every-weekend kind of place.

There are few places in the city that I can feel comfortable eating alone when everyone is too busy to catch a bite with me. However, My Thai is always the perfect spot. There are several located around the Loop, but my personal favorite (where they know me so well they don't bother giving me a menu) is on Michigan Avenue between Monroe and Madison Sts. Although their choices of music are a little shifty (it ranges from repetitive elevator music to covers of pop songs), their food is absolutely to-die-for. My boyfriend, who happens to live in New York, comes to visit more for their food than to see me. The food ranges from spicy curry dishes to more conservative plates like chicken and broccoli, along with THE BEST crab rangoon I've ever had in my life. They also have a secret stash, occasionally, of the most delicious strawberry ice cream, but it's not on the menu; you have to catch them off guard and ask for it special.
