I've been going to "The Fortress: Comics and Games" for nearly two years. I mainly play Magic: The Gathering, but I've played a couple other games there. The Fortress has a great atmosphere, and great people, but they don't run enough tournaments, which really puts a crimp on the amount of play that happens in East Lansing. If you're a card gamer or Miniature gamer near East Lansing, and you don't know about the Fortress, stop by some Friday night and see what it's like.

I spent a week in Blacksburg, VA recently, and found several incredible restaurants, one of them being Gillies. I was having a little bit of a problem deciding which wonderful dish to try, but I finally settled on Bruschetta with Portabello Mushrooms as an appetizer and Foccacia for the main course. (I must have been fixated on bread that day) The Foccacia was alright, nothing special. But the Bruschetta was incredible. I had to go back for lunch a couple days later and the food was excellent then as well. My favorite dish still is the Bruschetta, I would go there and get several orders regularly if I lived near Blacksburg. Gillies specializes in vegetarian, but they also do seafood and sometimes other meats. They have incredible food, a wonderful atmosphere, good prices, and friendly staff.

Mac and Bob’s is a cool restaurant that started out being a small pub and sandwich shop with 8 stools and now is a full sized restaurant. Like many restaurants in Virginia, there was a bit of a problem with the separation of Smoking and Non-Smoking, and if one was extremely sensitive to smoke, it might be a problem. The food was very excellent, and the Buffalo Chicken Calzone (The smaller one) was still quite large, but the leftovers the next day were nearly as good as fresh out of the oven.

In a recent trip to Pittsburgh, PA my friends and I stopped for coffee in a little coffee house called Kiva Han Coffee. It’s a really cool independent coffee house with a unique atmosphere and appearance. While I personally cannot vouch for the iced coffee, my friends all enjoyed their coffee, and I enjoyed my Italian Soda. (it was a touch too sweet, but still cool and pleasant after several hours touring Carnegie Mellon and University of Pittsburgh.) There was a very nice 2nd level that had a very comfortable couch and a band was setting up for a gig later that evening. Recently, a Starbucks has moved in across the street to try to force Kiva Han out of business. So if you’re standing between Kiva Han and Starbucks, try Kiva Han and support the local business.

Last winter, on a trip to DC, it was very chilly and windy, and my family was looking for someplace to eat. We found Hard Times Café, a loud, boisterous bar/restaurant known for its Chili. The chili was quite amazing, they had three different kinds, Texas, St. Louis, and some other kind which I didn't try. I preferred the Texas chili, but the St. Louis was still better than any fast food chili I've ever had. Either way, the chili warmed all of us right up.
Hard Times Café also makes their own root beer, which has a distinct honey taste, my family was split in opinion on it.

Glass City Barbecue had nice food overall, but the atmosphere was entirely too much like a smoky dive bar. Another caveat is that the Jalapeño butter that came with the corn-bread was made with margarine, and didn't taste as good as I had hoped. Still they had passable barbecue ribs, and very good corn-bread. They also had fried pickles, which I had never seen before, and I thought they were quite good.

Mama Lee's Pizza is a locally owned restaurant which not only has pizza, but also a small Mexican menu, subs, calzones, and a breakfast menu. They have a gourmet pizza menu, which has two outstanding pizzas: Chicken Ranch, which has grilled chicken, bacon, and a drizzling of ranch. And Italian Stallion, which has strips of capricola, pepperoni, and peppericini. The one problem is that they close really early (10 o'clock weekdays), a side effect of living in a small town.

El Azteco is a wonderful Mexican restaurant in downtown East Lansing. My parents had their first date there, and I've been eating there all my life. My tastes have changed a bit towards spicier food since I started going there, but they have good spicy food too, so I've always been able to find something to get there. If you just like typical Americanized-Mexican food, I'd recommend the tacos, but for more authentic Mexican food, the Enchilada de Jocoque is very good, spicy has a nice burn, and mild has a little bit of heat
