The University Bookstore has great clearance deals at the ends of terms. Look into their discount bins to find computer accessories and art supplies. They also have had sample bottles of medium for painters to try. That's nice! Also a great selection of unusual greeting cards and the usual made-in-Montana stuff for visiting parents. Come for the books, then completely ignore them for the deals on artsy things.

Budget promises to re-buy the used CD's they sell at half the selling price. This is not a bad thing. The store has a no-nonsense feel to it. Just take Best Buy's prices for new releases and add $5 to it and you have Budget prices. That is a bad thing. Look here for older CD's that you won't be burdened with after burning them.

This may be tempting, but realize that your credit is good only on paperbacks โ used paperbacks, which are completely picked-over due to the store's popularity. If you are a science fiction fan, have a ball!

No fabric here (except for little bundles of fat quarters periodically), but just about anything else you would need for arts and crafts. Michaels carries a large selection of silk flowers and baskets and seasonal decor items. They also carry a pretty good selection of supplies for oil, acrylic and watercolor painting. Serious artists will probably want to go mail order for their supplies, but hobbyists should be pleased with the selection. Michaels also offers a large selection of yarn, beads, needlework supplies, rubber stamping and scrapbooking supplies, cake decorating, and many other areas. They have a good ready-made frame and pre-packaged mat selection, and they also do custom framing. Ads with coupons are often available in the Sunday paper, but never available in the store. Customer service is very hit-or-miss, and the staff do not ever seem to be able to answer actual questions about crafting. This is Michael's biggest disadvantage - you are on your own when you're there. Still, they do have the largest general selection in Missoula.

OK, so I've spent enough time at Joann's that the ladies who work there know my child by name. Joann's has, by far, the largest selection of fabric in Missoula (especially if you are looking for fleece), and also a fairly good selection of craft supplies. Unfortunately, they have definitely outgrown their space. Craft supplies have taken a backseat to seasonal goodies and baskets. Sales are frequent, and if you sign up for their mail flyer, you will get coupons and advanced notice of the sales. Sales staff are friendly and experienced, and can offer helpful advice if you're stuck on a project. It would be great if Joann's could move to a larger space, and become an ETC. store (carrying more craft and home dec supplies). Hopefully, this would add more space for cutting fabric, and more cashiers. Sometimes, the wait for these two lines can be very long! Overall, we're lucky to have a Joann's in Missoula.

Bargain hunters, beware: if you want lots of beads or findings, and cost is important, Bathing Beauties may not be the place for you. However, if you desire a dizzying array of unique beads from around the world, you'll definitely want to stop in. They have an incredible selection of beads made of vintage glass, stone, metal, bone and yes, even plastic. Plenty of examples of beaded jewelry are displayed around the shop to give you ideas. Classes are offered after hours, and if you can't wait to get home to make your vision a reality, BB offers free use of a toolkit to assemble your beads on the spot. Be sure to sign up for their mailing list, as you'll get advance notice of sales, and sometimes, a 'thank-you' gift at the holidays. You could probably spend less for ready-made earrings, but the fun of making something uniquely yours is worth the extra cost.

I first tried a sandwich from the Pickle Barrel in Bozeman some twenty-odd years ago, as a MT Tech student. It was huge and yummy (more than you could eat at one time), with a great big deli pickle. Sadly, the pickles aren't as good (or big) as they used to be, but I do like their gooey peppersteak sandwich: beef, onions, peppers and Jack cheese. Not good for your waistline, but good for the soul. Reasonably priced, you can order either a half or whole sandwich. They also offer soup, salad and ice cream and shakes.

We went to Paul's after seeing good reviews for it year after year in a local newspaper's readers poll. I tried their version of my usual favorite, potato pancakes. They were the worst restaurant potato pancakes I've ever had. They seemed like they consisted merely of regular pancake batter with a handful of hash browns thrown in - and they arrived overdone. How hard is it to pull a pancake off of a griddle before it burns? The service was also very slow, considering we were there in the afternoon, after breakfast and lunch rushes. My dining partner was also unimpressed with his food. I don't know how this got to the top of anybody's poll - ballot stuffing by employees?

The Taco Time at the UC on the UM campus has a loyal following for its Veggie Burritos. They are the daily special for Wednesday, and the lunchtime cry in my workplace is the title of my post. To get the healthiest version of this meal, go for the whole wheat tortilla. It will be filled with rice, beans, cheese, pico and even sunflower seeds (plus the usual add-ons like peppers and black olives). Add guac and sour cream if you'd like, but it will cost a little extra. Something to look forward to, for sure!
