That waiter, he was charming, but a goofball. Don't forget how a view of the river can increase your appetite.

Jaker's features a decent salad bar and your average American fare on the menu. Where they really stand out is the coldness of the food that arrives at your table. Perhaps a lawsuit from someone whose lap the waiter burned has produced a chilly mandate. Therefore my steak was cold twice and I won't be making it a third time.

Shakespeare & Co. sells new books. You'll like the independent-seller-supporting act of purchasing a book there, save for the laconic guy or gal who happens to be reformating a hard drive when you come in. It's like you just stepped into their studio apartment and if they acknowledge you as little as possible you might go away. They do select to display some interesting counter-culture books.

You remember record stores. Well, your nose does. One whiff of patchouli is all it takes for Rockin' Rudy's to return you to the record store of yore. It is a fine place for unique jewelry, high-quality paper, and scatalogical gifts. I like their expansive greeting card section. And they sell CD's too.

When we set out to purchase our first home, there wasn't much available in our price range. We went to Lambros, and saw Mindy Palmer. She (and her assistant at the time, Deborah Gladback) worked really hard to find us a place that fit our needs and our budget. We respected the fact that they chose to steer us away from a few bad places, rather than just getting the sale for themselves. We finally got our house, and then experienced some difficulties with the mortgage company - we ended up overpaying our property taxes by several hundred dollars. We thought we were on our own, but when Mindy found out, she and her assistant went with us to the courthouse and she then called some of her contacts on our behalf, and brought a check for the overpayment to my husband at work. She was named Realtor of the Year that year, and it was well deserved. Hopefully, she will still be working in Missoula when we decide to sell our house.

And at Nara, Thursday is $1 Sushi Night. Get there early, especially if it's during cold-weather season, when they can't make use of their outdoor seating. When it's not $1 Sushi Night, expect to pay quite a bit more. The first time I ventured into new territory, I tried the scallop (sorry, don't remember the Japanese names for what I tried) and yellowfin. They were both so sweet and delicious. That night, a friend and I also split one of the Korean barbecue dinners - a dish with beef and vegetables that you put on a lettuce leaf and ate like a wrap. So good! The service can be a little slow when they are really busy, but it is worth it. At a group dinner, fellow diners also liked the sesame chicken and the California rolls. Dinner accompaniments include a tasty green salad and a lovely salad of cucumber and fruit.

I've realized that for over a year now, when I think of picking up a sandwich, I end up driving into Quizno's instead of Subway. OK, maybe the email buy-1-get-1-free coupons have something to do with it (register at their website), but I really think it is the toasted (vs. cold) sandwich. Favorites include the veggie, chicken carbonara, and roast turkey with raspberry viniagrette. Tops, though, is the new prime rib - yum! They do have a punch card, but it starts over each month. That's too bad. Service is friendly enough, usually pretty no-nonsense. They also offer soup (which I haven't tried), and a bare-bones salad (which I have - just lettuce and few unripe veggies). Just stick with the sandwiches, and you won't be disappointed. Subway must agree with me, as they've started offering toasted subs, too.

Yes, GFS has the best selection of bulk goods in town, from soap to spices. And they have some produce items not available anywhere else in town. It's just that when you go there, everyone (staff included) has a definite superiority complex. People are way too proud of themselves for making the 'right' choice to shop there. Plus, be aware that many pre-packaged items are now available at other stores in town, at much lower prices. Huckleberry's (the natural food section in Rosauer's - not on Judy's Book, so unable to write a separate review for them) does not have as many bulk items, but what they do have is nearly always cheaper than GFS. I try to shop GFS only when I need something I can't get elsewhere, and when the $5 off of $50 Valpak coupon comes out.

I want to pour a tablespoon of oil of the top of my pizza slice. I want my fingers to swim in the little pool of fat made by an up-curved pepperoni piece. I don't want cheese, so much as I want a lattice of dairified fat. Give me a crust that makes squishy noises. Give me a pizza from Pizza Hut.
