They've done their best to make darn sure there's a flavor to please everyone at Baskin-Robbins. Along with old stand-by's, you'll also find seasonal flavors, sorbets, and an assortment of sugar-free flavors, which is really nice. Baskin-Robbins also sells ice cream cakes. The only problem I have with this chain is the serving size - I like an old-fashioned generous scoop of ice cream, not a small rounded ball with all the crumbs knocked off. They do run specials from time to time, and almost always have a coupon in the Valpak that comes in the mail, so that makes it more fun to go try the new flavors.

I took Homeword's classes for first-time home-buyers a few years ago, and they were invaluable. Guest speakers came in to explain the entire process, from searching for financing to signing the mortgage papers. Sponsors of local assistance programs also let prospective buyers know what's available to help them get into a home, without getting in over their heads. I recommend these classes to everyone looking for their first home. In fact, we were told they (or an equivalent) were actually required in order to get our MT Board of Housing loan. The fact that this is all free is incredible.

I actually haven't had much luck finding clothes for myself here, but have gotten some great deals for my husband and my son, when he was a baby. My favorite reason to go to Ross is for the kids toys and books, and the kitchen gadgets. Often, when I need a child's gift, my first stop is Ross. I can find books that are currently at Barnes & Noble, for half their price, and the toys are less expensive than even Wal-Mart. Brand-name kitchen gadgets are always priced less than at their neighbor, Linens N Things (even using an LNT coupon).

A few years ago, we were building a shed from a kit sold at one of the big box home stores. Since we live in a very windy area, we wanted to brace the walls. We went to both of the big box stores to ask for metal bracing strap, and nobody there knew what we were talking about. When we went into Intermountain, they knew exactly what we meant (it's actually seismic bracing), and quickly produced a whole roll for us. They then told us that this item is required for construction in parts of Montana due to risk of earthquake. We were impressed, and grateful.

Home Resource is a great idea, and totally in line with the way Missoula thinks. Don't throw away the old stuff you tear out when you're remodeling - take it to Home Resource (it's tax deductible, too - ask for a receipt). Just call in advance, in case it's something they can't take. We've made use of HR many times - picking up partial cans of paint when we only needed a small amount, miscellaneous containers of nails and screws, wood trim, cinder blocks and many other things. When they first opened, it was easier to find a hidden treasure mixed in with everything else, but now, they seem to be a little more aware of what they're taking in, and items like vintage locks and doorknobs are kept at the front counter. Still, this is a great place to find odds and ends for a project you've started, or to get some ideas for you next one. And yes, they have LOTS of old toilets.

Missoula has a plethora of chances for second-hand treasure-hunting, but Goodwill beats them all. When I looked around my house, I realized that about half of the furniture in my house came from Goodwill. A coat of paint or new stain, and you have a perfectly good piece. They are also hard to beat for clothing - most of my maternity wardrobe came from Goodwill, and I got great brands to boot. Each item gets a colored tag when it goes out to the floor. Each week, there's a half price sale on at least one of those colors for even better deals. Purses are a great bargain - I got a Nine West shoulder bag in perfect condition for only 99 cents! They also offer discounts for senior citizens and Griz Card holders. The main beef I have with Goodwill is the arrangement of the clothes. They used to be arranged by size, but some time ago, someone had the awful idea to arrange by color (the denim area is insane). So, you have to give yourself time to dig, and possibly be a weekly visitor to get the choicest of items.

My husband and I have had opportunities to have overnight sleep tests at Missoula Sleep Medicine a total of four times (so far) over the last two and a half years. The staff of MSM are great - doing their best to answer questions and offer advice. Dr. Silverglat has a very kind manner, and wants to find the solution to your sleep problems. You may not sleep well during your polysomnogram (being wired up, and aware that you're being watched and recorded), but be assured that the information they gather will be put to good use.

Dr. Braby practices as an ENT specialist at Rocky Mountain Ear, Nose and Throat. My husband and I are both patients, and we both like him a great deal. We were both dealing with sleep apnea, and other breathing problems, and Dr. Braby performed multiple surgeries on both of us within 6 months time. Neither of us had any complications from the surgeries, and his skill was very evident in the speed with which we recovered. Prior to our surgeries, the mention of his name to other area doctors and nurses would bring assurances that we had picked the best surgeon in town. Not only does he know his stuff, he is kind - if he senses that something he is doing in the course of an exam or procedure is causing discomfort, he stops and apologizes. We consider ourselves lucky to find someone of his caliber in a city the size of Missoula.

A trustworthy mechanic is hard to find, and I think we finally found one in Rico, owner of Import Solutions. He and his staff know Subarus- when I first called, and described the awful burning smell we got everytime we ran the heater, he correctly diagnosed it over the phone. His prices were very reasonable, and unlike some places in town, you can actually get in touch with him to make an appointment. His walls are covered in certificates from Subaru, recognizing his training and quality of his work. Highly recommended.

If you ignore the wheatgrass you're supposed to want added to the drinks here, they taste terrific. They offer the chance to customize your concoction as well. It costs around $4.25 for the regular size, but look for buy-one get-one-free coupons in the local papers. Outside their downtown location is a waterfall sculpture, which is fun to make faces through while sipping a blueberry smoothie.
