The Missoula Public Library has a fine collection for a city of this size. It reflects the general attitude Missoulians have towards providing access to the arts to all. A unique offering is the collection of free magazines and books that are available on the lower floor of the library - a great way to recycle. The library has more than just books, from CDs and DVDs, to pre-school storytime to movies for teens and computers with public internet access. Having lived in different parts of the U.S., and frequenting libraries in each place, the one very big downside is the general atmosphere when you're actually in the library. Nobody in my family has ever felt welcome. Staff attitudes range from fairly cordial to downright curmudgeonly, depending on who is checking out your books to you. This is too bad, as I think a great local resource could be even better. Still, we are lucky to have our library, and should definitely support it.

Everything about Costco is big: you buy one of their pizzas, it won't fit in your oven. You buy soap and paper goods there only once a year. Great prices on things like printer ink, eyeglasses and tires. The savings on a set of tires alone may pay for your membership. Buying food there is probably not a good deal for a small family, but if you have someone with whom you can split a 10 lb bag of onions, or you REALLY like Jelly Bellies, then Costco's the place.

This florist on the busy corner of Higgins and 5th is a little hard to get in and out of, but if you like to put together your own bouquet, it's worth it. Their cooler is full of a colorful array of blooms and lots of greenery. Of course, they will put together an arrangement for you and deliver it, too. Staff is friendly and helpful. The store also has a nice selection of silks and gifts. Later evening hours would be nice, though.

With 3 locations in town, Crazy Mike's is the closest thing Missoula has to a video chain. There is a slightly different selection at each store, with the newest one on Brooks featuring only DVD's. The best idea they had was to have their 99 cent special on Tuesday, when the new releases debut. New stuff is usually picked over by noon, but if you can get in line when they open, and join the orderly rush to the outer walls of the store, you can get your fix of cheap movies.

The venerable greasy spoon does a fantastic job of loading on the cholesterol. Eggs wrapped around cheese-infused hashbrowns, topped with hollandaise. OMG! The problem is that during the winter, they refuse to turn on the heat. Pipes freeze, waitresses wear jackets, the thermometer reads about 50 F. Only visit in the winter months if you're an adventure-lover.

The little kids' play train located at the Dillard's end of the mall is the city's favorite place to pass communicable diseases between children. When you're done there, enjoy the historic photos of Missoula past down the hallways on the way to the restrooms. For those of you visiting from major cities, this is the only mall in western Montana to approximate those you may be used to. Overall, it meets expectations.

Tuesday night brings around the popular "pub trivia night" at Sean Kelly's, so be forewarned that it will be standing room only from 6 on. The competition is stiff. The pasties, flaky, yet somehow inappropriately so. The prices, fine. When a booth is available, enjoy a cold pint with your Missoulian Molly in a clean, well-lighted place.

The swordfish, the correctly-prepared steaks, the freshness of the veggies. Why don't you want to drive up the hill to eat here? You've heard the service slow and is geared toward satisfying its larger groups before canoodling couples. Well, bring some friends and set some time aside to have a very good meal.

This straightforward fast food chain claims to be famous for its cheese fries and (duh) hoagies. I'd suggest instead a chicken sandwich - the best ever - and their seasoned hoagie fries. The poor cheese fries, stuck together by a quickly rubberizing bunch of cheese, are as indigestible as they are impossible to eat politely. But the lesser-touted menu items are a tasty value.

The theme of Liquid Planet's menu is things that are or were recently in liquid form. With the inexhaustible amount of beverages planet Earth offers, you might think they'd have a long list of pourables ready to order. Alcohol is off-sale only and the menu is limited to coffees and cocoas. But this is a cozy spot to eat fantastic crepes and shop for ginger ales between study sessions.
