If you've never had Ethiopian, you should try it just for the experience. Everyone's entrees are served on one gigantic brown tortilla-like thing, which you pull apart and use to scoop up the saucy food. The Ethiopian tradition mandates that people feed each other as a gesture of friendship...whether this actually happens will probably depend on how deft you are at eating with your fingers and how much you like the person you're eating with. Mudai has little to no atmosphere and the service is pretty slow, but the food is excellent and unlike anything you've had before.

Absolutely my favorite barbeque joint in Portland. Start with the sweet potato fries; they're fried TWICE for extra crispiness and served with some kind of addictive spicy sauce that I've never been able to identify. The ribs, pulled pork and brisket are all fantastic. I like to mix the Virginia Classic sauce with the Kentucky Mustard. Barbeque beans are just so-so; skip them and try the mac and cheese, candied yams or collard greens instead. Homemade rootbeer complements every possible combination of delicious southern yumminess.

There are two reasons for going to the Iron Horse. One is to drink margaritas while sitting outside, and the other is to get one of the build-your-own taco platters. The Roasted Potato Tacos are incredible; the Lemon Garlic Chicken ones were a little dry. The Iron Horse is regularly listed as one of Portland's best Mexican restaurants, but I don't know if I would go that far. It's a great place to eat if you're in SE, but if you've got a choice, go to Esparza's instead!

That's right, a dive in the Pearl District...arguably the only one. For those nights when you're looking to drink while staring at an entire wall of Jaeger bottles, this is the spot. It's dark, smoky, comfortable, and the kind of bar that makes you want to order a Manhattan. Prices are reasonable, and if you're a non-smoker you can sit in a crazy throne-like booth in the back of the non-smoking side.

I happened across this jewelry and gift store several years ago, and I've been buying birthday presents for friends there ever since. The selection of mid-range locally-made jewelry is fantastic and unlike anything else I've found in Portland. The store owners are hilarious, and they wrap every purchase up like a present whether you're shopping for yourself or someone else. Support local artisans, small business, and have fun shopping! So much better than a trip to the mall.

The best haircuts I've ever had have been at this unassuming salon on a quiet strip of NW 21st. The stylists are all employed by the salon, not renting stations, and the whole place is closed one day a week for mandatory training sessions. Better than that, stylists aren't even allowed to accept tips, so your $45 haircut actually costs $45 and you don't have to deal with that awkward "How much is enough?" moment at the end of your cut. Recommended absolutely to everyone.

Tuesday nights the Rog has 3 tacos for $1.50, and that's the only reason I can think of for going there. The atmosphere is a dank, smoky sports bar chic, but the tacos are great...horrible, but great. The tuesday night bartender, Rob, will remember you if you've been there twice, and won't even get irritated when you sit there for 2 hours and your entire bill comes to $1.50. See you on Tuesday...just don't sit at the corner booth, that's my table.

Apparently this place has varying degrees of gayness, but when I was there last night the only indication it was a gay bar was the poster on the wall advertising their upcoming underwear party. The drinks are insanely cheap--regular price for Miller High Life is $1.25 and well drinks are $2. A Long Island will set you back $4. These are the prices when they AREN'T having drink specials! Bottom line: a centrally located downtown bar with the cheapest drinks I know of in Portland. Who cares how gay it is?

Mmm Lush, what would I do without you? These are bath products like you've never experienced before. If you haven't had a Lush bath, get thee to the store immediately! Portland is lucky enough to have one of the only stores in the US, and we should all take full advantage of that. I'll honestly recommend everything in the store, but my current favorites are the Bollywood bath bomb and the You've Been Mangoed bath melt. If the idea of a $6 bath scandalizes you, those in the know chop their bath bombs in half...

Long dry spell? Find yourself a date and get to Colosso immediately. The intimate tables, candlelight and heavy velvet curtains covering most of the walls make for an undeniably sexy atmosphere, while the drink names (A Naughty Kitty, anyone?) are just flirty enough to make you blush when ordering them on a first date. Names aside, these are the best drinks I've had in Portland. Their Sidecar was fresh squeezed and perfectly sweetened, the Naughty Kitty was juicy with fresh crushed strawberries, and The Daisy (my date was too much of a man to order it for himself...I had to ask for it for him) was an extravaganza of muddled fresh mint. Stare into each other's eyes, enjoy the candlelight, and then get your date into a bedroom ASAP.
