.... but it's true. I don't like Cedars. I love Indian food and the idea of a good butter chicken curry makes my head spin, but each time I have dined at this restaurant, I always end up leaving disappointed. The wait is long if you come during the 7pm Seattle-dining hour and the seating is cramped. With all the commotion, it is easy to see why the servers always seem flustered and forgetful. The food itself is okay, moreso than other Indian restaurants, you can tell the curries have been pre-prepared. Also, the chicken is low-quality and can leave your stomach churning if you bite into a bad piece. :-(
I know I am probably the only one who doesn't like this restaurant, so don't go with just what I said. Maybe I got unlucky the few times I went.... Sorry.

While the pizzas could use a bit of improving at this local pizzeria, it is their massive calzones that stand alone. Pre-dinner salads are available free of charge before your meal, but my advice would be to skip on the ranch-spilled salad and save room for that calzone! Prices are okay, nothing spectacular. Just a solid-neighborhood joint that draws students and families alike. Watch out for post-game crowds stampeding in from Husky stadium. Otherwise, no issues with seating. Enjoy!

I discovered this small Indian restaurant but a year ago and now I cannot go but a few weeks without my curry fix. The small restaurant is brimming with great menu options and a friendly staff. The Indian staple, Naan bread, is done perfectly here with many variations. Combine that with a great curry (naan dipped in curry = heaven) and you're set. I paticularily love the butter chicken curry. At dinner they also give you a great lentil soup before your entrée for free! Brave the Roosevelt parking and get to this restaurant now!

Jamba Juice. Hooray! The smoothie joint almost needs no explanation. Good smoothies, great staff, fast service, and a wide variety of choices. Check out the convenient nutritional fact book on the side of the jamba bar to find the smoothie that is best for you--- some can be a little heavy on the sugar and carbs. I go for the enlightened smoothies for a great midday pick-me-up. The small little bakery items round out the great smoothie selection. A great alternative to the TWO Starbucks in the shopping mall. Summer is coming and I'll sure be binging on smoothies soon. :-)

Nana's Soup House on 55th is a cozy, intimate cafe that wins atmosphere points but perhaps loses on prices. Though no Seinfeld-esque Soup Nazis reign here (the staff is very casual and friendly), the prices are a bit out there for a small bowl of soup. My lunch partner ordered a slightly larger bowl of soup than mine own (for a higher price) but to both our dismays, both soups arrived in the same bowls.... he was even tempted to go and ask for the lost difference! The wait can be a little long just for a bowl of soup (what else do you have to do but ladle it out?) and even longer if you order a sandwich/salad. Expect to see a lot of kids around also... the small space can get a tad noisy so I'd opt for a far-back booth if you can snag one.
That said, the quality of the soup/salads/sandwiches etc is top-notch. The menu offers vegan, vegetarian, and meat soup sections that allows everyone to find something. Just good ol' soup. I'd suggest the the vegan lentil.... yummmmmmy!

The selection at this video store is mind-blowing. You'll probably end up coming in for a certain movie and walk out of the store with three Indonesian films you never even heard of. The selection is massive and the organization of the store is intriguing. Love a certain director? They have their own section allowing some lesser-known films that wouldn't make it into Blockbuster to get some recognition. The staff are all quintessential film buffs and are great for suggestions-- just ask!
The store makes most of their income on late fees that can sting you (especially in this new no-late-fee era), so watch your small rental-time-window carefully.
Check out some Fellini while you're there! 8 1/2, La Dolce Vita, and Roma are my favorites. :-)

The Crest cinema in Shoreline has always been a sure bet on rainy, lazy weekends. While the seats are old, springy and tattered, the quality of films and the price surely make up for the comfy-factor. The flicks played here are outta-theatre, pre-video that will allow you to catch up on films you didn't get to see the first time around in theatre. Parking can sometimes be a hassle, especially the later shows and seats go quick in the smaller screening rooms. Get there early and you'll be taken care of! Enjoy!

While a plethora of coffee shops and bakeries exist in the area, Cafe Europa is a great place to cozy up at your own table for hours without the constant stream of noisy students and gossipy women. The panini sandwiches mark the restaurant, as the bakery does seem a bit scarce in selection sometimes (depending on the time of day, day of the week, etc). But the sandwiches and soups are light, tasty treats. The decor can be improved a bit-- the last time I was at the restaurant it was February and the Christmas tree was still up!
Otherwise, this is a great little spot and if you find yourself alone in the restaurant for hours, all the better! Great place to read/study while enjoying coffee and a French movie (tv placed cutely in the wall).

The Sunflour Bakery is a great local joint and famed for its great breakfasts. The restaurant itself feels like you're sitting in your own little breakfast nook and the staff are all very warm and inviting. While, like most reviewers, the breakfast hour can get a bit crowded, taking away from that home-y feeling, the wait is worth it. Take a stroll around the great neighborhood if you're told to come back in ten-fifteen minutes! The menu is hearty and varied and everyone will be sure to find their favorite breakfast item. Bring the whole family-- the inviting, personal vibe is enhanced when the kids are running around and the adults chatting with folded newspapers....
Enjoy!

Walking on the Ave. in search of a healthy meal can sometimes be daunting. You have with your most common choices ranging from pizza to Thai. The Pita Pit, however, is a great health food alternative-- if you customize your pita correctly that is. Many people think that by opting for a pita over a slice of pizza, they're saving in the calories, fats, etc. However, I have seen some patrons gobbling overstuffed, over-sauced pitas that's nutrional facts would probably shock them. Grab a nutritional guide available at the restaurant or check online to make sure you're getting enough good vegetables and less on the sauce to create a truly healthy meal. That aside, this in-and-out restaurant is a great find and the food service is surprisingly fast. The joint could benefit from a few more tables and chairs, as space is very limited.
