My family and I have been frequent patrons at this great neighborhood Chinese restaurant. The owner knows us by name and always takes time to stop by our table and have a genuine talk with us (not the awkward chitchat about the weather, sports teams, and such). The food, though a little pricey for a family restaurant, is fair in terms of quality. The plates are big enough to split and the menu is large enough to keep you coming back for years. If I may, try the appetizer sampler to get a great taste of everything-- the bbq pork, though a Chinese-restaurant staple, stands out here.
Enjoy!

Shakespeare, the dramatic staple throughout history, is constantly being reinvented with this great Seattle Center troupe. The plays range from the well-known Romeo and Juliet to lesser-known Shakespeare such as Love's Labours Lost. The directors are artists in that they can take dated texts and apply them to modern settings, atmospheres, and contexts. For example, last season's "The Taming of the Shrew" was an all-male cast! The gender implications of this play were vivified and magnified with this great directing risk. As always, the actors are top-notch dramatists well-known throughout the Seattle theater-world.
If you're looking to save a buck, special pre-premier shows give great rates and excellent, near-perfect productions. Check listings before the shows are reviewed in the papers to get on the special post-production, pre-premier nights.

Due to its convenient location, I seem always to get drawn back into Zao noodles despite my frequent disappointments-- and the trend never seems to stop. The restaurant is crowed (if the outside patio isn't open, good luck trying to hear your dining guest), the servers are sketchy (despite the clever shirts), and the food is just plain wrong. An appetizer order of chicken sate at the whopping price of around 8 dollars was just unjust giving the three measly strips of hard chicken that I received in return. Entrée prices are so outrageous it hurts to think how much money was wasted on some sloppy noodles. Head over to Blue C Sushi on the other side of the University Village if you're looking for some great Asian flavors- this place is a dump.

Lavender Blue, situated just a block up from Pike's Place Market, is a great stop for the fashion-minded of Seattle. The small, comfortable boutique brims with the latest fashions and the retailing staff are surprisingly warm and personal. What is stand-out about this small shop is the sale prices! Impressive, complete outfits can be snapped up at great prices if you time your visits right. Great for a eye-catching clubbing/party/night on the town wardrobe options. Next time you're in the area, pop in and you're sure to find something you fall in love with (and it might even be on sale!)

Trabant Chai lounge on 45th is a nice escape from the Starbucks mania. The owners of Trabant pay attention to detail both in cup and atmosphere. The wide variety of chais along with Mexican Hot Chocolate and Yerba Mate keeps you coming back for more day after day. The atmosphere is often home to a few UW students seeking refuge during finals week, but the diverse Ave. gives the patrons of the lounge a great, intriguing atmosphere. The artwork, open mic night, open notebooks free to doodle and write in, and even the computers (free for patrons) gives this Chai Lounge a great, personal feeling. It will soon become your favorite caffeine-stop (see ya Starbucks!).
Also, "chai" means tea, so do not be an annoying newbie and ask for a "chai tea". It's redundant.

INSpa in the University Village is hardly deserving of the term "spa" at all. The setting is more like a doctor's office (the walls, the employee's attire, the products are all stark white!) than a spa. While other spa's are minimalist in terms of atmosphere, but still provide great service, this spa is lacking in pretty much every category. I was dismayed when receiving a facial that they kept me fully clothed and thus, extremely uncomfortable, during the entire service (which is not proper spa etiquette). The high prices were not reflective of the atmosphere, employees, or services.... rather, you leave INSpa feeling as if you have just had a visit to the doctors rather then a relaxing spa.
Take your hard-earned money elsewhere to get pampered.

My family and I have been coming to Marlai since its opening several years ago. The wait-staff have come to know us and take the time out of the busy restaurant hubbub to converse with us. The food is spectacular, especially the often-overlooked Thai staple, the peanut sauce. While some Thai restaurants skimp/rush this sauce, Marlai makes the sauce alone a work of art. The atmosphere is cozy and the small group rooms create even a more intimate setting for larger parties. Great for business meetings-- it's not surprising to see many business-clad men and women sneaking away from the local offices to take a lunch at this great, affordable Thai restaurant. Highly recommended!

While Headlines Salon in the University Village may lack in the frivolous (ie- tea, waterfalls, cushy chairs), it makes up in quality hair cuts and colouring. Opting for a new look, I was very hesitant in committing to a salon. Clutching my picture of my ideal haircut snipped from a magazine, I went to Headlines fearfully. The atmosphere was rushed, informal, and my appointment was ten minutes late. An hour later, however, I was shocked by how great the service was at the salon. My stylist, Christina, had a great personality and was wonderful to chat with and she did a perfect job! I was so surprised and grateful. The colouring was right on and even four months later, the highlights don't show any abrupt roots... they looked so natural but defiantly was the pick-me-up my hair needed. Request Christina and you'll be in great hands.

While the atmosphere is great, the waiters friendly, and the on-wall entertainment gigglirific, it is the often overlooked take-out service that makes this UVillage restaurant a stand-out spot. Just zip in, grab a takeout tray, and pick and choose from the great variety of sushi choices on the conveyor belt. From there, just pay at the front and you're set to enjoy great quality sushi away from the crowds. Great for a pick-me-up between classes if you are a UW student or for lunch breaks if you work in the area. Healthy, tasty, and convenient take-out options are hard to come by and Blue C Sushi will easily become the go-to option for sushi lovers in the area.
