We have been systematically trying to find the best Dim Sum and we found a really good one today. This place had all of the standards plus some really interesting (not in a scary way) new things to try. There is an emphasis on seafood but there was a ton of choices. We love dim sum because, with a two year old, there is never a wait for your order. We got there a bit on the early side (10:00) and would probably go later next time since most of the best stuff comes once more people are there. I would shoot for 11:00. This place is HUGE so you won't have to wait AND there is parking a big garage so you don't have to deal with the International District's parking issues.

Jane is a warm and friendly woman with many years of experience doing interiors in Seattle. My parents have used her in their very modern house and she has managed to help them make it warm without being drastic. Just what you are looking for - clean lines. She also is working on the interior of a young family's house so I know that she is flexible in terms of style. She is fun to work with.

Tricoter is getting a bad rap and I feel like I should chime in. I have been seriously knitting for 15 years now and Tricoter is a mainstay in my knitting repetroire and here is why:
You need to know that knitting a sweater is going to cost more than buying one. Since you will most likely spend over $100 on yarn, here is what you get for the extra $50 bucks you might spend on Tricoter's yarn...
1. A totally custom pattern! Tricoter's knowledgable staff can take the most random request for a sweater (say "I want a vest with a zipper and I need a size 4 and I want to mix in yellows and browns") and will clearly diagramthe project, from scratch or from a similar pattern and include clear directions. This covers everything from baby blankets to hats and all items inbetween. They have books to help you see what you might want but they will always help you tweak it to get just what you need.
2. If you ever run into a problem, you can stop in for help and yes, you might have to ASK for help from someone because it is a busy place but once you engage someone there they can become your knitting guide, help you improve your skills and they will never let you make a mistake without learning why and how to fix it. In addition, you will have hours of hilarious comedy material gained from sitting around listening to the foibles of Madison park's curious characters!
3. you can sit down and TRY ENDLESS YARNS until you get the right gauge and color combination that you want. THIS IS THE ONLY STORE IN TOWN THAT LETS YOU DO THIS! Again, you will have to want to do this. They will let you buy a pattern, yarn and needles without trying the gauge but they will always encourage you to try if you show any interest in doing so. I have learned from experience that this is the best way to be happy with your final product. Always check the guage!
Tricoter also has sales with up t0 75% off at least twice a year. Since I am not rolling in dough, I usually buy most of my yarn at these sales, and fill in with occaisional skeins here and there throughout the rest of the year. As long as you bought the yarn from there, they will always help you with your patterns and ideas.
Like anything else worthwile, becoming a part of the Tricoter community takes some effort. If you want to become a better knitter, this is the best place in town.
All that said - if you want to make a baby blanket for under $30, and you already have a pattern you love - go to the Yarn Gallery in West Seattle and buy cheap acrylic yarn - babies are messy anyway!
If you want to create an heirloom - go to Tricoter!

Swanson's is an amazing nursery with incredible selection, knowledgable and helpful staff, and excellent baskets. I never buy garden products and those big stores anymore because it always ends up bug infested or dead. Swanson's sells the best product. They are not the cheapest place in town but they have a great fall sale (I think it is sept1-Oct?) which is a great time to plant stuff with the coming rain.
We needed some hanging baskets for my wedding and they were a pleasure to work with, consulted with us about exact colors, planted the baskets early and removed plants that weren't working replacing them with good ones. We were really happy!
They also have a special Christmas decoration celebration and a live reindeer in November and December.

Instead of a cake at our wedding we served the most amazing ice cream sandwiches from Fran's chocolates and everyone loved them. As the bride, I had a great time passing around the ice cream sandwiches on a tray and seeing people's delight at not having to eat another wedding cake. Cake can be great and Fran's makes great chocolate cakes, but ice cream sandwiches are truly memorable. Go to the U Village Fran's and get one to see for yourself!

The Pink Door has been a Seattle institution for longer than I can remember (before I was legal to drink). This is a perfect place to meet a group of friends for appetizers and drinks or a great place for a romantic meal. The patio is part of the restaurant - There is a view of the market and some water and the ambiance is great. It can get crowded but there is indoor seating for the overflow. Not touristy - more of an insider's place. Most nights there is some kind of musical entertainment.

I was the Director of a medium sized annual event in Seattle for 5 years and we had a great relationship with THE COPY COMPANY. They are always professional, reasonable, friendly and easy to work with. We were a very print-heavy event beause marketing is such a big part of getting people in the door. All of the printing, from posters, to guides, to letterhead, to brochures, to mailers (2 color and 4 color) always turned out perfect. I now work for a small non-profit and went back to The Copy Company for all of our needs. Ask for Cathy!

Cactus is in Madison park and can be pretty chi-chi in terms of the Seattle-Wanna-be-Hollywood factor. However, the food was excellent. There is a chicken fried chicken that my husband asked about and when described as "basically a big chicken tender with southwest spices and chipotle gravy over cheesy mashed potatoes.." He replied, "You had me at chicken tender". It was great. I had the steak salad which was very tasty too.
We didn't have drinks which can drive up the bill VERY fast but we managed to get out of there without feeling guilty. The side of Guac is $5, which is steep too.
The people watching is rich though!

Ceasar salads have a long history in Seattle. In the 80's, before every restaurant had one, there was an AMAZING ceasar salad at Hank's in madison park - now closed. This ceasar was an event and a special memory for those of us who ate them.
Since then, it seems every restaurant in the country has their own version.
I would say that the ceasar at Ray's is one of the best in the city. They really get it right - perfect creamyness and cheesyness with the subtle salty anchovie. It also tastes great with the salmon or crab added.
Ray's is also a great restaurant in general and the perfect place to take out of town in-laws, etc.
