This airport has one wonderful thing I've seen in no other airport besides Myrtle Beach: free wireless Internet access throughout the entire terminal. Granted, the terminal isn't very big and, since it isn't a hub for anything and therefore is unlikely to have anyone waiting in it for connecting flights, you are not at all likely to be spending much time there you could be surfing the web. But it's still cool.

A nice if unremarkable airport. It is rather small - one terminal with about 30 or 40 gates (most of the airport's traffice, I believe, is commerical traffic from UPS). It has no food beyond the gates, but since you're unlikely to be making a connection here anyway, this isn't a big deal. It has recently been undergoing renovations which make it much prettier.

Philadelphia has been massively improving its airport, although I believe they are barely still up to par of even a reasonably sized city, much less one which has one of the larger metropolitan areas in the country. Its improvements and extensions have helped improve its image, but there is still work to be done, particularly in retail. Not my favorite place for a stopover, I would think.

This lovely church is frequently used for concerts and other cultural activites under the auspices of the Coumbia University Miller Theatre, which provides cheap tickets for students - although for the general public its excellent concerts are kind of pricy. Its deep reds and greens help give it a very southern European look, and it has some very beautiful statuary along the sides.
One warning though, if you go, do attempt to sit near the front because otherwise the concert may be inaudible.

I walked into a Sephora, I was in Lyon. As in France, and nearly bought out the store. My friends could not convince me that some place this wonderful could be found in the US. Thus, it was with rather great delight I found the stores in NYC (and, eventually the one in King of Prussia). It's a grown-up girl's candy shop - the colors, the flavors, and oh, my goodness! you don't really need more of that... but can you resist?

1. We aren't Penn State. I don't even mean this in the negative sense - I happen to be rather fond of Penn State, with good memories of a summer spent there and many friends who love their school. However, we're located in University City not State College and we've Quakers not Lions. (also see #4)
2. Wharton isn't the be all and end all of Penn. Yes, they've more money than they know what to do with and they're awfully famous (and perhaps a tiny bit evil, they never say). But people actually do major in other things here - law, medicine? How about actual humanties courses? Yup!
3. No, it's not as dangerous as it looks - keep your wits about you, and don't do anything silly. But the location is great for getting into Center City - if you like.
4. And, as a note to a friend of mine that didn't know otherwise, this is the sports powerhouse (and member) of the Ivy League.
5. Honestly, it's a great place to go to school :)

...but they're slowly easing out some of the smaller specialty stores in exchange for chains. Growing up in this area, it was said to see the Winston Game Company and Aussie Outfitters close their doors. Not to wax nostalgic for stores now long gone, but it added a nice touch for unique gifts which you honestly couldn't find any place else..
However, it is a great location for shopping - and for many stores, this is their only location in the area, such as Sephora, Delia's, Coldwater Creek, JJill, to say nothing of the high-end boutiques. And of course, they have the full complement of your usual mall staples - but with a Borders, to boot! Just be aware that Christmas and Black Friday are extremely crowded!

When I mentioned the Strand's famed 18 miles of books to my godfather, he, in his usual fashion, began calculating the possibility of exactly how many 'floor miles' adverse to 'shelf miles' this actually contained.
On my part, never mind exactly how many floor tiles my feet and traveled that day. The wonderful thing about the Strand is the pure random nature of their books: the mixing of the old and the new, the rediscovery of forgotten treasures and chances to discover new books. The price levels, are, to say the least, remarkable. Even staying out of the aisles proper and working among the sales book tables, there is much available in all subjects. And, unlike even my beloved 'bargain book section's at the local Borders and Barnes and Nobles, the books here are top notch, often works of literature, resigned here due to overstock, rather than lack of readers.
Don't miss are their outside $1 shelves, where even a cold day can reveal treasures. For those of you in search of a new bag, their iconoclastic totes are only a small selection of what they have available. And, lastly, they have a wonderful selection of hard cover books from the Modern Library, for those of you looking to build a classic selection.

There's nothing quite like 'but maybe I could use that' to make someone feel happily domestic. College students, teenagers, and young twenty-somethings alike all can share in the wonder of the capitalist economy at work. Granted, no one ever expects Ikea furniture to last - thus when it does stand up on its own, everyone is shocked and amazed. Aside from cheap disposable furniture they do have an amazing selection of knickknacks, kitchen goods, rugs, picture frames, house plants, Swedish meatballs... need I go on? And lest we forget, everything named in the most amazingly crazy way possible. It's could easily be a day in itself - go in the morning, eat lunch in the café (the cakes are tasty), sit and ponder what you should put back in the afternoon, and try to make out of there before your car bends from the weight of your purchases!
However, jesting aside, Ikea does have quality goods for a price that almost everyone can afford. It is quite a bit of fun to wander around - at leat for me. Don't forget to find a copy of their catalog when in need of inspiration - or easy bedside reading!

...wandering through these aisles may spoil you for regular grocery shopping! A fine selection of pre-packaged food, sushi, frozen deserts, cheeses, and breads makes this a grocery mecca. Cheaper, my opinion at least, than Whole Foods and for West Philly residents much easier to reach: they're just a stone throw from a Green Line stop.
I'll knock off one star for ingredients: Nut allergy, beware! Walnut flour is used in some unlikely foods such as pasta, while nut warnings have been seen in their packaged soups.
