UPDATE: THIS CAMPUS IS ABOUT TO BECOME A DRY CAMPUS - INCLUDING OFF CAMPUS FRAT HOUSES - BEWARE
There is a reason RPI is a top-ranking engineering school. They place so many of their resources into Engineering and strictly engineering that the other areas that the school has available as majors suffer. Students in non-engineering majors often have trouble finding jobs after they graduate. Part of the reason for that is because of the Career Development Center's focus on strictly engineering. They will work hard to provide opportunities for engineers, but rarely do they bring in companies wanting to hire science, architecture, IT, or humanities majors.
Additionally, despite these disparities in quality, the tuition has gone up continually ever year that I have been here. If as a prospective student your student aid package leaves your family tight on cash, realize that the amount they or you will have to come up with out of pocket will only increase. Also, if you are going to be having siblings going to college after you, and your parents will have to suddenly start paying 2 tuitions at once, do NOT expect RPI to give you any additional financial aid to account for the extra money your family is paying.
