If you're looking for some great beauty products, Sephora is the way to go. The people who work there can be a little snobby and mildly pushy, but the selection they have there is great! If you are familiar with Ulta, they're similar but don't carry drugstore brands like Ulta does. Some of their things are a bit expensive, but I've always liked everything I bought there. Also, consider ordering their free catalog - it comes out every season and has lots of new products plus hair and makeup tips.

Sweat Shop offers many of the benefits of a large gym but without the large-gym atmosphere or prices. The storefront seems small, but the gym itself is quite large. There are numerous ellipticals, treadmills, and other cardio machines (the only equipment that is hard to use at peak time is ellipticals - even treadmills are pretty easy to use during the after-work hours), plus a variety of weight machine. They offer a variety of classes, too, and have an upstairs where they hold spinning classes. I'm a huge fan of working out here - the staff is friendly, the machines are always working, and it's very clean.

While I sometimes equate Papa John's with the free pizza organizations gave away at meetings during college, I must say that I am impressed with the "side dishes" they offer. The pizza is okay - kind of greasy, but good junk food - the best options on the menu are their cheese sticks and breadsticks. The cheese sticks are garlicy and use a little thicker crust than the normal pizza, and they are great dipped in ranch dressing. The breadsticks are great too, also dipped in ranch dressing or in the garlic sauce. Yum!

If you're not from town, or if you are but haven't gotten to it yet, you MUST visit Portillo's. They have the best hot dogs on the planet! There's not a whole lot of atmosphere, save for some antique-y decorations, but the food is well worth it. The hot dogs come on steamed poppy seed buns, which are delicious. The fries are great and even better with cheese sauce. And the milkshakes and chocolate cake are fantastic! The location in Chicago hasn't ever been busy when I've been there, although the ones in the suburbs tend to be packed. Definitely a Chicago tradition!

I went to the Robert Jeffrey on Webster twice for haircuts and brow tinting (which they do, even though they don't advertise it), and my first experience was okay. The second? Horrible! I told the stylist I wanted my eyebrows lightened to better match my hair color. Rather than a dark brown, they came out BRIGHT YELLOW. The stylist said nothing, and apparently didn't wipe off the tint enough. When I got home they were even lighter! I wrote to the store but never received a response. Don't dismiss all locations of this salon - the one on Halsted is MUCH better.

The best Italian restaurant in Chicago by far is Volare. It's kind of hidden, although still very close to Michigan Avenue, and is definitely a cozy atmosphere. Nights are very busy and you might have a hard time getting a seat, but it is well worth the wait. Prices are reasonable (about $12 for a plate of pasta) and the servings are huge. The best meal there? Caesar salad, gnocchi with vodka sauce, and tiramisu! Service is usually great, although my one complaint is that even when you make a reservation, getting seated still tends to take a while. I definitely recommend coming here, either for a date or for a group dinner!

Since moving to Chicago, I've been going to West Coast Video on Broadway in Lakeview for video rentals, and I have no complaints! They are reasonably priced ($3 per rental, and new titles are sometimes overnight but usually five days), and catalog titles (aka not new releases) are always rent one get one free and keep both for a week. They have a great selection, although for older titles you'll need a VCR. MUCH better than the sky-high prices at Blockbuster, plus a lot more selection and better chances of having what you're looking for!
