In the past, Old Navy seemed to have clothes that didn't hold their shape very well, but that's all changed recently. The last time I went through Old Navy, I was impressed by the selection. One thing they always do very well is offering basics like t-shirts and tank tops in tons of colors, and they usually run two-for specials with these basics. I've purchased some items to work in there, and I've noticed that the pants are kind of hit or miss, between being dressy enough or not too dressy. The not-so-dressy ones I had faded, but stick to ones that aren't cotton and you'll be set. The major drawback is that the staff isn't very helpful unless they're trying to hawk the Old Navy credit card.

Perhaps I don't have discriminating taste, but I think the coffee at Dunkin Donuts is pretty good. The french vanilla is great, and is excellent both hot or iced. I like that Dunkin Donuts has a variety of flavors and they've also started offering some different coffee drinks. You can't beat the price either - a medium flavored iced coffee is only $2, which is far less than what you might get at a Starbucks or Caribou or another upscale coffee shop. When I went yesterday, they were offering a free additional espresso shot in the coffee drinks as a Monday promotion. Yum yum!

Cookie Dough Creations has a great concept going.... You can order cookie dough sundaes in a number of combinations there. First, you choose an ice cream - they're pretty good, but there are some, like Superman, you probably wouldn't want to mix with dough. Then, you take your pick from a variety of different cookie doughs, like chocolate chip, sugar cookie, and so on. The doughs are made without eggs, so they're safe to eat raw. They have different ways to mix sundaes up, but just a scoop of each is good! Be prepared, though - they are very rich!

I know a big tourist attraction in Chicago is Navy Pier, and it is a nice place to go in the summer when you can take a long walk along the pier. However, in the winter, there's not much to it. I'm kind of surprised they don't have more upscale stores - the closest they have to an upscale store is Build-A-Bear (which is a cute place!). I know there is talk about redoing lots of the pier so it's a little more interactive, which I look forward to. If you have young kids, it would be great - the children's museum, Build-A-Bear, McDonalds - but for adults they should definitely increase the activities and shopping.

I went to the Robert Jeffrey on Webster twice for haircuts and brow tinting (which they do, even though they don't advertise it), and my first experience was okay. The second? Horrible! I told the stylist I wanted my eyebrows lightened to better match my hair color. Rather than a dark brown, they came out BRIGHT YELLOW. The stylist said nothing, and apparently didn't wipe off the tint enough. When I got home they were even lighter! I wrote to the store but never received a response. Don't dismiss all locations of this salon - the one on Halsted is MUCH better.

Zano's has a great relaxing atmosphere for your spa treatments. In the front of the salon is where they do your hair, and they do have specialists that either do color OR cut hair, so they are very well-trained in their area. There is a manicure area up front, but when you make an appointment, request that you be back in the spa. It is so soothing! The music is light, and there is a water fountain that gives a nice, relaxed feel to the spa. The chairs for the pedicures are WONDERFUL (they have back massagers) as your feet rest in a jacuzzi of warm water. Depending on the season, they offer pedicures that use pumpkin in the fall and other seasonal smells. It's VERY relaxing and well worth the price (and wait - call a few weeks before you want to get in).

Holes is a great book about a boy named Stanley Yelnats (yes, his last name is his first name spelled backwards) who is accused of a crime he swears he didn't commit. As punishment, he is sent to Camp Green Lake, which is actually a dry, barren desert. Many other boys are there too, and they dig holes all day, every day. No one knows why the boys are digging holes until Stanley starts to put the story together. There are several stories woven together in the book, which are nicely tied together in the end. There are also interesting coincidences, and as the reader you really get into what Stanley is doing. While written for the middle-school age group, this is certainly a book adults will enjoy as well!

Although it is geared toward the young adult reader set, Invisible by Peter Hautman is a wonderful, eery book. The main character, Dougie, is a character that the reader is led to feel very bad for... He is an outsider, a loner, with a single friend, Andy. You can kind of see the end of the book coming around the middle of the story, but Hautman does such a wonderful job of creating Dougie's character that predictability doesn't matter. I wouldn't be surprised if this book wins numerous awards in the near future. It's a quick, yet haunting, read.

I recently read "Not Much, Just Chillin'" and, as a future educator, I found the stories of the main characters to be scary but very realistic. The book follows several middle school students through the school year, and focuses on the changes they are undergoing. A couple of the characters fade into the background, but a few stand out notably. I was honestly expecting there to be more problems, but the typical teen issues, like drugs and sex, are reserved more for friends of the main characters. Still, it's good insight into the lives of teens, and a great read for teachers and parents alike.

Hoot is a very cute book! It is a young-adult book (so about middle school age or slightly older), but it's definitely one that anyone of any age can enjoy. Roy plays a middle school student who is new to town, and he is intrigued by a boy he sees running barefoot. He goes on adventures trying to determine who this boy is - while dodging the school bully as well. The story also brings in another big issue - Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House is getting ready to build on land that has burrowing owls on it. The book is great and a quick read, and should inspire the reader to do good things.
