I have been using Fresh Direct as my grocery retailer now for the past month. I love the website, I am amazed at the quality and selection of local and organic produce and products, and the items are delivered as promised by friendly drivers. If they ever are late - and it has happened - they call ahead and inform you of the delay. They don't do coupons but they do have great deals every once in a while (this month it's 10 bucks off your order if you order from their recipe selections...essentially just click on the recipe you want to make, then all the ingredients are automatically added to your shopping list.) I actually find I'm saving money by only ordering exactly what I need, and not getting distracted at the stores. Shopping from Fresh Direct has saved me time and money and I highly recommend them.

I recently visited my grandmother at her apartment in The Arbors at Port Warwick. It's a retirement community for active seniors - essentially people who are able to care for themselves and don't need 'nursing home' care. They offer exercise classes 4 days a week, have a very nice restaurant/cafe for meals and a lot of activities. The staff is all very friendly and helpful...there are housekeeping services too so we don't have to worry about my grandma. They have a lot of actitivites and transportation to get the residents to appointments. The Arbor is part of a big development that has lots of shopping and restaurants, as well as other apartments, condos and single family homes. The residents won't feel isolated, and although nothing will ever replace the comfort my grandmother felt in caring for her own home, The Arbors helps her and the family that looks after her feel good in knowing that she has a very nice place to live. It's expensive, but I sure hope that a place like this exists for me when it's my turn to look for housing!

I enjoyed a recent meal at "Cheers". My group (grandmother, 2 aunts, a famly friend and my mother) wanted a quick lunch and were pleased with our experience at Cheers. We were sat immediately and drink orders were taken right away. It took a while for the server to come, but he was responsible for the entire room. The food was decent, not the best I have ever had, but certainly fine for what we needed. They have a varied menu so everyone could get something they wanted - even my health conscious mother who is very particular about her food. Cheers really reminds me of a Fridays or an Applebees, so if you're looking for something along those lines, you will enjoy your time at Cheers.

Candela is a nice spot for dinner with decent food. I actually had better service at the bar than we did from our waitress at dinner, and will probably only go back for drinks. Definitely go for happy hour - they have good deals, and if you want to splurge, try the Mojito. Yum.
As for dinner, I had the spicy shrimp pasta dish which was good but almost too spicy. We were offered coffee to end the meal but then out waitress disappeared before we ever got it. We decided that a stop at Dunkin Donuts was a better use of time and money than waiting for her to come back with the coffee. My date had the lobster ravioli, but he was more impressed with it than I was.
Candela is light exclusively by candles so it's cool for ambiance, but if you're looking for spectacular food and service, you should probably go elsewhere. If you're looking for a nice place to start your night with a drink at the bar however, this is the place.

Aggh. I couldn't wait for this excuse of a film to come out on DVD so I could do a regular review. So I put it in the review of the theater I saw it in. Great theater, comfortable seats, decent popcorn. Too bad that was the highlight of my evening. In a word, this film was awful. Helmed by Michael Mann (who wrote the TV Miami Vice!!!!) and led by uber hotties Collin Farrell and Jamie Foxx I was really hoping for decent entertainment. What I got was 2 hours of terrible dialogue, truly meaningless scenes and no interesting character interaction. If you like action movies about under cover cops, see Bad Boys.
I'm a movie fan and hardly ever give bad reviews to other people's work, but man, I didn't like this one! (Gee, can you tell ?? :)

Harmony View opened up in NYC's theater district about 9 months ago. It's a great, large, comfortable space for a large group but also quite lovely as a quiet place for a couple to have lunch or drinks. The menu is standard Irish pub fare, although I was disappointed with the fish and chips. Next time I'd go with one of the brunch specials or a hamburger. The service was very friendly and attentive - although I was the only patron in my area so I should hope they would be attentive! - and really like the location of this restaurant. It's right across the street from the theater where Wicked is playing and is an easy walk to nearby subways or the other theaters in the area. If you're looking for a new, affordable spot for a pre-theater meal or an after- show drink, check this place out.

This is absolutely a delightful film. The ensemble is made up of Steve Carrell (as you've never seen him before - in a serious role) and Greg Kinnear lead, with Toni Collette as the mother trying to keep it all together and Alan Arkin as the drug using grandfather. There is a teenage son who doesn't say a word (this is brilliant acting) and of course, the little girl (Abigail Breslin, who you may recognize from Raising Helen and some Law & Orders).
This great film is about a seriously messed up family driving from New Mexico to California so their daughter can compete in the "Little Miss Sunshine" child beauty pageant. It's painful, hilarious, and a truly sweet story about what you do as a family to help the ones you love. It is rated R for some strong language and 2 scenes with drug use. This is not a family film, but it is a film about family. I will definitely buy this on DVD when it comes out, and I hardly say that about any film.

Pig Farm is a new play by the team that brought us Urinetown a few years ago. This new play is about a couple trying to run a pig farm with the help of an 18 year old juvenile delinquent on loan from a work release program. Naturally a love triangle develops when the wife gets tired of waiting for her husband to stop focusing on the farm and start focusing on her. Add to the mix a crazy EPA inspector who falls in love with the wife and with the idea of living on a farm instead of in Washington. It's a very dark comedy - sometimes the comedy got too dark and then too 'silly', but I enjoyed the production.
The actors were very committed to their characters and each showed a vulnerability that made occasionally unlikeable characters likable. Denis O'Hare in particular does a fantastic job as Teddy, the EPA investigator. This production is not good for children - lots of language and a shocking ending. It covers serious issues like keeping a farm in the face of government restrictions, infidelity, trying to maintain a crumbling marriage and deception.
The set and music are very well done, and the Roundabout's new home at Laura Pels Theatre is definitely worth checking out.
I recommend seeing this play!

I finally ventured out this morning to see the Long Island City Farmers Market. I have been spoiled with easy access to the Union Square Farmers Market, and was glad to find another one that is in walking distance of my house. Unfortunately I was not wowed. There were about 8 vendors with baked goods, fresh beef, fruits and vegetables. I was used the Union Square one where there are easily 25 on any given day. I picked up some peaches and plums from my favorite orchard, but otherwise was not impressed with the selection. It is a good market if you just need a couple of things or want to pick up some fresh bread for lunch. Otherwise if you are planning a big shopping trip, you will be better off making the trek into the city and going to Union Square.
The Long Island City Farmers market is in Hunters Point, and is open from July to November on Saturdays only from 8am to 1pm. The nearest subway stop is the 7 to Vernon/Jackson. Just walk a block up on Vernon and it's there on your left. After you're done shopping check out the spectacular view at the river.

Ruby Foo's is a great place to take your family before a Broadway show. The food to mee seems a bit more "fusion" than authentic Chinese food. The presentation is beautiful and they have really unique drinks (I had a pumpkin martini there in the fall and it may have been the best drink I've ever had.) They have nice sushi and the entrees are varied and unique, but you can do just as well at a 'regular' Chinese food restaurant a few blocks away on 9th Avenue and save yourself a lot of money. If you're looking for a fancy place to impress your date or your parents, this is the place. Make reservations though, this place is very busy.
