Now, here's something to impress your co-workers - order Tiffany's Treats! The business started from an idea at a business class to make cookies and deliver them while they're still hot. Pretty basic? Yes. How awesome? Very.
They have a great variety of cookies which will be delivered in the downtown area while they're still warm and gooey. You can also order milk (or chocolate milk) and can package the whole thing in themes - such as birthday and others.
This is a great specialty that comes at a price but your co-workers, or wife or hubby will be highly impressed. Try them!

Player's is one of the most convenient and affordable places near campus and the downtown area. Their stronghold is their burgers - big and greasy. They have other choices on their menu, but their burgers are unlike any others in Austin.
Their fried mushrooms are also really, really good. You might want to consider taking a trip down here if you haven't been because UT has been going strong on taking this place out to put a gigantic hotel.

If you work in the downtown area, you've got to try the Clay Pit's lunch buffet. I've never been there for dinner, but their menu looks a bit pricey for my pocket book. However, their lunch buffet is affordable and you get a pretty decent amount of choices. Their main dish always changes so you might want to call ahead if you have something specific in mind.
I've heard some people complain about the lack of choices their buffet offers but for $7, what do you expect? Their dinner is way more costly and this way you get to taste a variety of their specialties. You'd likely spend just as much if you went to the Pizza Hut buffet which is way greasier and lacks the quality. I'd say try it once and see if it's for you.

They also have great coffee and awesome desserts. I believe their morning selection is from Quack's so you know you'll have something to enjoy. They also have a great selection of cakes and other pastries.
Definitely a good place for after dinner, to hang out with friends or to impress a first date.

Hut's is one of Austin's favorite places for hamburgers. This place is always packed, though, so beware of long lines and finding parking. If you're gonna go for it, though, my suggestion is to get there before the crowds. I've gotten there at 11 AM for lunch and by 11:30 there were only a couple of tables left. It's definitely a busy place but their selection is worth it.
Make sure to check their menu online if possible because the variety may overwhelm you, specially if you're hungry and have been waiting for a while. They also shakes and plate specials. Make sure to check the back of the menu to check their daily specials. They always have something going on.

Chez Zee is probably a good choice for special events like birthdays or office parties. I've been there a couple of times and the food is definitely of more quality that most other Austin restaurants. But where they really kick it up a notch is on their dessert menu.
They have everything you can think of - from cheesecakes, chocolate cakes, pies, mousse and everything else in between. I've tried several of their desserts and none have disappointed me.
Their menu also has something for everyone. I love their steamed veggies, which are never overcooked and always taste fresh. Their sandwiches are also great.

When I first got to Austin, it seemed that everyone was recommending Baby Acapulco as the place for Mexican food. I went there a few times and finally gave up - what was the big deal? Their parking is basically non-existent and you can't ever hear anything since the place is so loud. The food is okay but after having such a hard time to find parking and paying $10 for enchiladas, you can think of a few places to find a better and pleasant experience.
There's an abundance of good Mexican food places in Austin. This is definitely the trendy place and their food is OK. In fact, if the rest of the factors weren't so bad, I bet the food would taste better. But, they're not. It's just an average place for me.

Dobie Theater is a good place to catch independent films year-round. It's not the most comfortable or nicest-looking theater, but you'll definitely get your money's worth when you can't find that movie playing anywhere else.
They also have special events showing old movies and their midnight shows are also kind of fun. If you're a UT student, then this theater is convenient since you don't have to drive anywhere. If you're not, though, then you can park on the garage across the street. Just make sure to get your parking validated when you buy your tickets.

As big as this town is for independent movies, there's not a great abundance of theaters that carry them. The Arbor Cinema, however, has always stayed true to their independent spirit. They are also never too crowded and I've always had a great experience here.
If you're planning to attend a movie during a high-peak hour on the weekends, do try to be there a bit early because parking is sometimes an issue. Specially if there's a hot movie coming out - and since Arbor's usually the only one playing it - also plan on getting in line before buying your ticket.

This is really the only place to go if you're looking for a Longhorn-themed gift. You will find anything and everything under the sun with the Longhorn spirit on it. Their bumper stickers and T-shirts section have a great selection. They don't have many great deals but it's likely that you won't find those in many places. Longhorn items are always in style in this town.
If you're a student, you will find decent prices for the books that you sell back. There used to be more competition on this end, but the Co-Op has recently taken over that sector. Still, they haven't gone completely off the end and still give pretty good returns.
