Teaism is a great place to take a short break in your day, grab a soothing cup of tea, and have a light meal. The menu is varied, with european style breakfast offerings but Japanese and Asian style dishes for lunch and dinner. The Japanese Bento Boxes are excellent. Some locations of Teaism have a separate store for tea and tea-related gift items, but the Dupont Circle location has the gift related items in the same area as the restaurant - with beautiful tea boxes. Overall, a simple atmosphere with a good menu when you are in the mood for something light.

The go-to place for Ethiopian food in Washington, DC, Meskerem has both the ethnic dining experience and great food to match. Has a very good selection if you are eating with vegetarians, and the bread on which they serve the various dishes is fantastic. Try to on the ground level floor, as the downstairs seating area does not have the Ethiopian decor & furniture of the upstairs, and the downstairs is very dimly lit with "normal" tables and chairs. A great place to share interesting and good food with friends!

I received a gift certificate to Spa Central, and cashed it in for a spa pedicure. The storefront doesn't look like much, but when you walk in, you feel like you are in a nicer place. The pedicure I had was relaxing, I was seated in a massage chair with a warm jetted tub for my feet. The woman did a great job of keeping the pedicure and polish neat - my toes looked perfect!

Every once in a while I have a craving for Dairy Queen soft serve - and this Davis Dairy Queen does a good job in meeting my cravings. There is a wide selection on the menu with food options, even salad, but I've never gotten anything other than soft serve at DQ. The only thing I don't like about this place is that the atmosphere is lacking - the building and dining area is huge, but all the booths are pushed so close together, and the lighting in the place is so dim. It just feels old to me.

The Baskin Robbins in downtown Davis is a good place for a sweet treat. The store has a selection of ice cream, sorbets, and frozen yogurt, giving people with different dietary needs an opportunity to find something to fit within their own diets. The seating space in the store is relatively limited, but there are benches outside where people can sit if there isn't room in the store. Your standard Baskin Robbins offerings, nothing special, but good nonetheless.

The Yolo Fruit Stand is just simply a great place. They have a good selection of produce, much of it produced locally, at amazingly low prices. They also have an extensive assortment of dried fruit, nuts, beans, and snacks. Along with the produce, there is a good-sized selection of Middle Eastern/East Asian spices, condiments, and other ingredients. Finally, the staff at the Yolo Fruit Stand are just the nicest people. Helpful, friendly, and they remember your name! One my regular food shopping destinations.

Cafe Italia in Davis has okay food, but terrible atmosphere. When I dined there, I was seated in an area that seemed like an enclosed patio. The atmosphere was terrible, and I was so cold I kept on my jacket. We had to make a reservation for the restaurant, so I thought it would be a relatively nice restaurant, but I was wrong. I will not be going back.

I don't know why it is, but Mocha Joe's seems to have a very different clientele than cafes closer to the UCD campus - perhaps it's the proximity. That being said, you can see real locals enjoying their coffee at Mocha Joe's versus the normal student scene, working away at a laptop or reading textbooks and doing homework. The coffee is good, and there is seating both indoors as well as a few tables and chairs outside.

The Chamonix Coffee Company is located in a strip mall with the Albertsons, but is a standalone building. The inside of the coffee house is painted a cheery yellow, and there is a good assortment of chairs/tables as well as a bar running along one wall where you can work on your computer while enjoying your coffee. The free wifi is nice, and they even have a desktop computer patrons can use. There isn't any "comfy" place to sit, like a sofa or overstuffed chair, but it's still not a bad place to work.
