A transplant to Southern California, I have never understood while people around here think Marie Callendars has great pies. Frankly, I can't imagine why anyone doesn't just make their own pies for Thanksgiving, but that's another tangent altogether. I'd never been very impressed with Marie's lunch and dinner menu. Recently, however, we went to their Sunday brunch buffet. It was wonderful! They had a delicious omelet station, a carving station, and a waffle station, in addition to smoked salmon, enchiladas, cereals, fruits, juices, bacon and sausage, biscuits and gravy, etc. It's definitely the only reason to go to Marie Callendar's in my opinion. Too bad they don't open until 9am on Sundays, since we get out of church at 8:30.

The Motherhood Maternity store in Chino seems to have the best selection of any place around this area (the one in Ontario Mills is like a bargain closet of crap). I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were several things that I thought I could wear without making myself vomit. I bought a pair of jeans, some khaki capri pants, and a skirt for less than $50 total. Some of their summer shirts looked like something that pregnant hoochie mamas only would wear, but some of their fall things looked like something I might even wear to work.

We went to the Ontario Improv with some friends who were visiting California for the first time. We had intended to go the Comedy Store in Hollywood, but it worked out that we needed to be in the IE that evening. I wasn't so sure about the Ontario Improv, but it was great. We saw Bob Saget's Uncensored act, which was completely hilarious. The two warm up acts that they had were also very funny. It was $25 each plus a 2 drink minimum for just over an hour's act. Also you have to line up at least an hour early in order to get a good seat. So I thought it was a little on the expensive side for a pretty short act. However, we only ended up getting one drink each, and they didn't charge us for the second one, so that surprised me. I think there really just wasn't time for it though.

I have become completely addicted to the chicken flautas from On the Border. Very crispy, just the right level of hot-ness, and delicious with their spicy cheese and some sour cream. My husband has gotten fajitas, which were also fabulous, and burritos, which he loved as well. Their chips are freshly made right there in the restaurant, and I really like their salsa as well. However, we've noticed that the spiciness of the salsa seems to vary greatly from one visit to the next.

I took my mother and aunt who were visiting me to the San Diego Zoo for a fun day. We got the tickets that included the tickets for the shuttles and tram, and it was completely worthwhile to do so. Taking the 40 minute tour bus is a great start to the zoo, because it helps you get your bearings and see what is available. I strongly suggest looking online before you go to see if there might be shows you want to see and to make sure that certain exhibits that are important to you are going to be available. Also certain animals have viewings only at certain times. We ended up skipping the pandas, because the line was tremendously long and we weren't willing to wait. Going when the zoo opens is a good idea, because most of the animals seemed to be napping in the middle of the day. Definitely bring your own snacks and drinks, because the zoo charges a fortune and the food is less than mediocre!

This is definitely the place to go if you are interested in buying jewelry and live anywhere in the LA area. There are hundreds of jewelry dealers and the competition makes prices rock bottom. You should be prepared to haggle and keep an eye out for quality and walk away if either aren't working, because the competition being stiff means you'll probably get what you want at the price you want just a few steps away. Street level vendors have little invested in overhead, and you may find thousand dollar gems thrown out in a pile you'd expect to find at a thrift store. Higher end jewelers are in the upper levels of the stores in the jewelry district. Getting recommendations from friends and family is the only way to go here, but great prices can be found.

I rented from Brandywine for two years. In the two years I lived there, the security gate was closed approximately twice. My favorite would be when they would activate the incoming gate, so that cars going in should use their access cards, but they would leave the exit gate wide open. Of course, criminals are going to obey the enter/exit signs! The maintenance was terrible. I would call numerous times to get something fixed, and I would always get the run-around. Usually, they would tell me when they were coming, and I would make arrangements to leave my dog at my parents' house. Inevitably, they wouldn't come that day but would show up on some unannounced day and then leave me a nasty (and usually illegible) note about my dog (he's a cocker spaniel afraid of his own shadow). I was in a 2 br/2 ba apartment, and I had one toilet that never flushed well the whole time I lived there, and it was never fixed. The walls of my apartment were paper thin. I knew more about the intimate life of my neighbor than I ever wanted to know. The one good thing about them was that they really didn't go up significantly in their rent from one year to the next, and the grounds were kept pretty clean. The pools were nice and generally well kept, although you could never be sure that someone would open them when the signs said they would.

Logan's Roadhouse used to have kind of a cool atmosphere where you could throw peanut shells on the floor and it had good food. The last couple of times I've been there, however, the wait has been very long (even though there weren't that many people), the service has been extraordinarily poor, and quality of the food has been bad. At our last visit, my salad had lettuce that was so old it was almost transparent and had black edges. My baked potato was still rock hard in the middle (not done). I ordered my steak medium. It first came out very well done, and I sent it back. The next time, it was bleeding. The waiter was extremely rude about it too.

A friend raved to us about Frederico's Italian Bakery, so my husband and I decided to stop by and grab some pastries for breakfast. They had an incredible selection of baked goods - fresh croissants, danish, bear claws, cookies, truffles, breads, cakes, tiramisu... It was so hard to decide what to get for breakfast, but I got an almond bear claw and croissant, and my husband got a pecan pastry and a cream cheese almond danish. All were incredible! I could have gazed at their display of cakes for hours - all are sold individually (in individual pieces) or you can buy the whole cake. Very reasonably priced too, especially since we have nothing around that compares.

We use the Chino Hills Small Animal Hospital as our veterinary office. We have two dogs - Paddington (a chocolate cocker spaniel) and Sydney (a pound puppy), and we are very pleased with this clinic. They have very convenient hours - including weekend hours, and they have a shot clinic on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings, where shots are CHEAP. They have several veterinarians, and we have really liked all of them. They also provide boarding facilities, which we have used several times. Their prices are reasonable, and they take great care of our pets.
