This was a very unsatisfying dining experience for me. The food was mediocre at best. I had a salad with peppered steak and bleu cheese and I'm surprised at how much in flavor it was lacking. Portion was small to adequate, but with the mediocre quality, it wasn't satisfying, not that I really wanted more of the same. The service was not good at all. We were 3 and first only one drink came out, a soda in a big mason jar, with NO straw (I got up and found one), before the other drinks (one bottled beer, one kid's drink) came several minutes later. Wouldn't be a huge deal, but the place was not crowded at all and how hard is it to bring a bottle of beer? The atmosphere is very bar-like but in a sloppy, way too casual way. I don't mind casual bars at all, but this place just had a cheap look and feel to it. Maybe it was the abundance of the neon signs. The bathroom was also filthy. This is one place I am definitely not returning to. Maybe one of the other locations is better, but this one lost a customer. I'm not picky, I just wanted things to be adequate, and everything was below average. Oh, except the bread rolls. I'll give them that; those were warm and good.

Living in the Mission, it is no surprise that my dining out includes a lot of burrito joints and taquerias. What does this have to do with an Italian restaurant? Well, La Traviata is a wonderful surprise in a neighborhood known more for other cuisine. The first time I went to La Traviata, I loved everything about it. The place is so warm and inviting, the table settings are elegant, and it's a charming, quiet restaurant on an otherwise noisy, busy street. The food is wonderful, with generous entrée portions, delicious appetizers, and fresh salads. The menu is pretty extensive, and of all the dishes my favorite is the dark inked pasta with squid (so good!). La Traviata is charming, affordable, filling, and will have you coming back for more. A definite neighborhood favorite.

The best thing about Scarlet Sage is the staff. They are friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful with suggestions and advice. If you're really into alternative health, teas, and essential oils, this is the shop for you. But even better, in my opinion, if you are not a big alternative aficionado, Scarlet Sage still has a little something for everyone. You can find wonderful soaps, books, gifts, incense, cards, candles, and knick knacks. I took one of their evening classes once (only $10) about herbs, and found it informative and practical (i.e., not too "out there"). The comfortable atmosphere makes it fun to browse, testers abound so you can sample products, the place smells great, and you'll likely walk out with a little soothing something.

There are 3 things I like best about Mr. Pizza Man. One is how extremely customizable their pies are. It's nice to be able to build your own white pizza or opt for a pesto creation. Two is how easy it is to order. Mr. Pizza Man lets you easily order online, calls quickly to confirm, and has your pizza hot at your door in less than an hour total. Online ordering also lets you add coupons to your order; select from regular deals or weekly specials; choose crust, sauce, and toppings; and order other items like calzones, pasta, salads, and beverages. And number 3? You can still take advantage of all of these features late at night thanks to their free late night delivery.
I've always had good experiences ordering from them--the pies arrive hot, delivery is fast whether on a rainy weekend or late weeknight, and I think the pizza is pretty good (I love white pizza and they do a fab job with the ricotta). Years ago it became a tradition of sorts for me and friends to get a customized pie from Mr. Pizza Man after music shows. A great option for a quick and easy pizza dinner or a late night gathering at home.

Que Tal has been my local cafe for three years and I have spent a lot of time there. I've been there late on weekdays when the place is quiet, as well as busy weekend mornings where you often have to share a table. I like the coffee drinks, the bagels are fresh, and the sandwiches are delicious. I have two complaints, though. One is the price of items. In the time I have been a frequent customer I have seen the prices for the sandwiches increase to the point that they cost as much as a sandwich + side might cost elsewhere. The other complaint is that I have had excellent service at times, but on the downside, I have had really bad service (waiting forever to order, wrong food, staff talking instead of tending to customers). It's a shame because when my favorite servers are there, it's a great place to read a book while having a latte and a veggie sandwich (the veggie sandwich is especially good). But when it's bad, it's so bad that I start to question my patronage. This of course does not take away from the quality of the food, but I wish prices would stop increasing and that it was more consistent an experience. That said, it's usually still worth it, but can be a mixed bag.

I have stayed at the Renoir and have had out of town guests stay there. It's not a luxury hotel nor a boutique hotel. It's very basic, you get a bed, bathroom, TV, a nightable, and a closet. If you want something fancy this is not the place for you. But is you want a reasonably-priced hotel in the middle of the city, then the Renoir is a great option. It's official address is McAllister but it's right on Market Street, less than 2 blocks away from The Warfield It's convenient to Muni, BART, and Union Square. The area can get sketchy at night, but the hotel itself is safe, in my own experience. There is no room service, as one reviewer noted, but there is a restaurant on site and many eateries nearby. It is an older hotel, but it's pretty well maintained considering, and I'd rate the housekeeping as very good. The Renoir won't impress you or offer you a luxury stay, but it's clean, affordable, and accessible.

The lemon tart is so delicious it's become a staple of celebrations with friends. And this from someone who is not a big fan in general of lemon tarts; it really is that good. All other pastries are great. My only complaint is that it is way too crowded, so I've had much better luck with buying things to go. The sidewalk tables get packed and it's hard to get comfortable. The desserts are worth it, but you might be better off taking them home so you can savor them without having to deal with the crowds.

Dolores Park Cafe is a great hangout, especially when the weather is nice so you can grab a sandwich and some coffee and head across to the park. Everything I have ordered has been great, but my absolute favorite is the Mozarella and Basil sandwich, served on a fresh baguette. It never disappoints and of all the ones I have tried, the one at Dolores Park Cafe is the best. Even if you are not headed to the park, grab an outdoor table and have a great meal while people (and dog) watching. Or spend some time at the counter with a fresh smoothie and the paper. A great place to hang out: good food, prices, and service, and always an interesting atmosphere.

The Metreon is tops for movies. It has the most comfortable seats, biggest screens, and best sound system of any movie theatre in San Francisco. It offers a variety of movies, from the biggest blockbusters to smaller films. It can get crowded, but with so many screens you'll always have a movie to watch. And it's extremely convenient to get tickets, since it has several ticketing machines, some of the first floor next to the regular ticket line, and a few machines on the 3rd floor where the theatre is. This is a great convenience. As an added plus, the Metreon Complex has Starbucks, Chronicles Books, shops, and a few restaurants, so you can hang out before or after a movie. Centrally located and state of the art, it's the best movie house in town.

Cafe Prague is a great place for lunch and offers a nice respite from the usual quick lunch or takeout places that we all end up frequentng on our lunch breaks. This cafe is quaint, warm, and has a great array of delicious sandwiches, soups, and salads. It's a very filling, hearty meal for very reasonable prices. Everything is fresh and served quickly. Tables are pretty close together, but this just ends up adding to the homey feel of the place.
